Celebrating the rich heritage of archaeology and of archaeological research in Hertfordshire, the 15 papers collected in this work focus on various aspects of the region, including the Neolithic to the post-Medieval periods, and include a report on the important excavations at the formative henge at Norton. Several chapters focus new attention on the Iron Age and Roman periods, both from a landscape perspective and through detailed studies of artefacts, while a discussion of the rare early Saxon material recently excavated at Watton at Stone makes a vital contribution to the existing corpus of knowledge about this little-understood period. All of the papers in the volume focus on the local scene with an understanding of wider issues in each period and as a result, the papers are of importance beyond the boundaries of the county and will be of interest to scholars with wide-ranging interests.

This volume contains forty papers from the CAA93 conference held at Staffordshire University in April 1993. As always the contributions reflect the most recent research in computer applications in archaeology, and fall under 8 broad headings: Image processing; Prospection and survey techniques; Strategic planningissues; Excavation recording and analysis; Spatial analysis and area studies; Statistics and trace element analysis; Computer aided learning in archaeology; Recording techniques for the conservation and preservation of standing buildings.

This study makes use of computer technology and statistical techniques to show how multivariate analysis can be of use in the study of coin hoards. Rather than attempting to answer specific questions through the use of statistics, Kris Lockyear instead tries to identifying patterns as a whole within the datasets to draw conclusions about coin supply and circulation.

Since very few of the papers from this conference were submitted for publication (although abstracts of these are given at the back), many of the contributions come from the CAA meeting held in Glasgow. The 19 papers consider different approaches to site evaluation and site analysis, the study of artefacts, dating and the role of GIS and the web in archaeology.

This collection of papers from the annual Computer Applications Conference has five contributions on Communication and Teaching, four on Stratigraphic Matrix Processing, five on Heritage Management, six on Statistical Applications, eight on Visualisation of Archaeological Data, two on Expert Systems.
