Domestic Affairs - Intimacy, Eroticism, and Violence between Servants and Masters in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Hardcover):... Domestic Affairs - Intimacy, Eroticism, and Violence between Servants and Masters in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Hardcover)
Kristina Straub
R1,783 Discovery Miles 17 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From Daniel Defoe's "Family Instructor" to William Godwin's political novel "Caleb Williams," literature written for and about servants tells a hitherto untold story about the development of sexual and gender ideologies in the early modern period. This original study explores the complicated relationships between domestic servants and their masters through close readings of such literary and nonliterary eighteenth-century texts.

The early modern family was not biologically defined. It included domestic servants who often had strong emotional and intimate ties to their masters and mistresses. Kristina Straub argues that many modern assumptions about sexuality and gender identity have their roots in these affective relationships of the eighteenth-century family. By analyzing a range of popular and literary works--from plays and novels to newspapers and conduct manuals--Straub uncovers the economic, social, and erotic dynamics that influenced the development of these modern identities and ideologies.

Highlighting themes important in eighteenth-century studies--gender and sexuality; class, labor, and markets; family relationships; and violence--Straub explores how the common aspects of human experience often intersected within the domestic sphere of master and servant. In examining the interpersonal relationships between the different classes, she offers new ways in which to understand sexuality and gender in the eighteenth century.

The Routledge Anthology of Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Performance (Hardcover): Daniel O'Quinn, Kristina Straub,... The Routledge Anthology of Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Performance (Hardcover)
Daniel O'Quinn, Kristina Straub, Misty G. Anderson
R6,785 Discovery Miles 67 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Routledge Anthology of Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Performance brings together a selection of particularly memorable performances, beginning with Nell Gwyn in a 1668 staging of Secret Love, and moving chronologically towards the final performance of John Philip Kemble's controversial adaptation of Thomas Otway's Venice Presever'd in October 1795. This volume contains a wealth of contextual materials, including contemporary reviews, portraits, advertisements, and cast lists. By privileging event over publication, this collection aims to encourage an understanding of performance that emphasizes the immediacy - and changeability - of the theatrical repertoire during the long eighteenth century. Offering an invaluable insight into the performance culture of the time, The Routledge Anthology of Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Performance is a unique, much-needed resource for students of theatre.

Making Stars - Biography and Celebrity in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Hardcover): Nora Nachumi, Kristina Straub Making Stars - Biography and Celebrity in Eighteenth-Century Britain (Hardcover)
Nora Nachumi, Kristina Straub; Contributions by Stuart Sherman, Semane Parsons, Heather McPherson, …
R3,256 Discovery Miles 32 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In bringing biography and celebrity together, the essays in Making Stars interrogate contemporary and current understandings of each. Although biography was not invented in the eighteenth century, the period saw the emergence of works that focus on individuals who are interesting as much, if not more, for their everyday, lived experience than for their status or actions. At the same time, celebrity emerged as public fascination for the private lives of publicly visible individuals. Biography and celebrity are mutually constitutive, but in complex and varied ways that this volume unpacks. Contributors to this volume present us a picture of eighteenth-century celebrity that was mediated across multiple sites, demonstrating that eighteenth-century celebrity culture in Britain was more pervasive, diverse and, in many ways, more egalitarian, than previously supposed.

Divided Fictions - Fanny Burney and Feminine Strategy (Hardcover): Kristina Straub Divided Fictions - Fanny Burney and Feminine Strategy (Hardcover)
Kristina Straub
R962 Discovery Miles 9 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

" Today Fanny Burney's venture into authorship would not be questionable. She was, after all, a daughter of a celebrated musician, and the Burney family was know to the circle of Samuel Johnson and Hester Thrale. Yet as Kristina Straub ably shows, the public recognition which followed the publication of her first novel placed Fanny Burney in a situation of disturbing ambiguity. Did she become famous or notorious? Was she a prodigy or a freak? In this study of Burney, Straub not only describes and analyzes the disturbing transition of a writer's self-awareness as a woman and a literary artist from private to public terms, but also reveals in Burney's works a hitherto unacknowledged complexity."
