Climate Futures - Reimagining Global Climate Justice (Paperback): Kum-Kum Bhavnani, John Foran, Priya A. Kurian, Debashish... Climate Futures - Reimagining Global Climate Justice (Paperback)
Kum-Kum Bhavnani, John Foran, Priya A. Kurian, Debashish Munshi
R969 Discovery Miles 9 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Approaching the issues of climate change and climate justice from a range of diverse perspectives including those of culture, gender, indigeneity, race, and sexuality, as well as challenging colonial histories and capitalist presents, Climate Futures boldly addresses the apparent inevitability of climate chaos. Seeking better explanations of the underlying causes and consequences of climate change, and mapping strategies toward a better future, or at a minimum, the most likely best-case world that we can get to, this book envisions planetary social movements robust enough to spark the necessary changes needed to achieve deeply sustainable and just economic, social, and political policies and practices. Bringing together insights from interdisciplinary scholars, policymakers, creatives and activists, Climate Futures argues for the need to get past us-and-them divides and acknowledge how lives of creatures far and near, human and non-human, are interconnected.

On the Edges of Development - Cultural Interventions (Paperback): Kum-Kum Bhavnani, John Foran, Priya Kurian, Debashish Munshi On the Edges of Development - Cultural Interventions (Paperback)
Kum-Kum Bhavnani, John Foran, Priya Kurian, Debashish Munshi
R1,479 Discovery Miles 14 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Big business, financial institutions, and capitalist powers have wreaked much havoc on the Third World in the name of development. This book re-imagines development through a careful and imaginative exploration of some of the many ways that culture - in the broadest sense of lived experience and its representation - can recenter resistance, suggest alternative models, and advance critiques of development as it is currently practiced. The diverse group of scholars and activists who contribute chapters to the volume engage with the puzzle of how best to conceptualize an alternative development that improves the living conditions of women and men in different parts of the world and simultaneously demands solutions that focus on the integration of gender, diversity, and development with the realities of people's lives.

Talking Politics - A Psychological Framing of Views from Youth in Britain (Paperback): Kum-Kum Bhavnani Talking Politics - A Psychological Framing of Views from Youth in Britain (Paperback)
Kum-Kum Bhavnani
R975 Discovery Miles 9 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1991, this study examines the views of politics presented by young people in contemporary Britain. Bhavnani argues that previous studies of youth and youth culture were limited by too great a reliance on simple survey techniques, and by lack of attention to conceptions of politics amongst young people, and to politics as a series of lived relationships rather than a set of external objects. Instead, she uses ethnographic approaches and open-response interviewing within the broad theoretical framework of social representations. The political is taken to refer to the ways in which people regulate, and attempt to regulate with a view to challenging, unequal social relationships. Within this the specific issues examined are employment, unemployment, youth training schemes, democracy and voting, racism, and marriage. Bhavnani's analysis, organised by themes such as disposable income and social and personal control, tackles questions of power in the research process; and a notion of discursive configurations as distinct from social representations.

On the Edges of Development - Cultural Interventions (Hardcover): Kum-Kum Bhavnani, John Foran, Priya Kurian, Debashish Munshi On the Edges of Development - Cultural Interventions (Hardcover)
Kum-Kum Bhavnani, John Foran, Priya Kurian, Debashish Munshi
R4,153 Discovery Miles 41 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume re-imagines development through a careful and imaginative exploration of some of the many ways that culture - in the broadest sense of lived experience and its representation - can recenter resistance, suggest alternative models and advance critiques of development as it is currently practiced. The volume is organized around three central questions:

  • How can development as it is currently propounded be 'refused' and how can such a refusal suggest ways toward a more equitable and liveable development?
  • How are emergent discourses around science, sexuality, and gendered economies challenging dominant approaches to development?
  • How do fictions and other cultural productions help envision alternatives to development?

This volume engages with the puzzle of how best to conceptualize an alternative development, one that improves the living conditions of poor people in the South and simultaneously demands a solution that focuses on the integration of gender, diversity and development with the realities of people's lives.

Shifting Identities Shifting Racisms - A Feminism & Psychology Reader (Paperback): Kum-Kum Bhavnani, Ann Phoenix Shifting Identities Shifting Racisms - A Feminism & Psychology Reader (Paperback)
Kum-Kum Bhavnani, Ann Phoenix
R1,146 Discovery Miles 11 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection makes an important contribution to contemporary feminist and psychological debates on identities and racisms. It addresses issues of commonalities, differences, subjectivities and the contradictory nature of positionings which are central concerns for feminist and anti-racist politics.

Leading feminists examine: the ways in which psychology has reproduced racism; the complexity of issues of identities and racisms which are shown to be multiple, constantly variable and renegotiable; the need to problematize and unpack whiteness'; and the problems of identity politics both in terms of explanatory power and political action.
