In the era of globalization many minority populations are subject to marginalization and expulsion from their traditional habitats due to rapid economic restructuring and changing politico-spatial relations. This book presents an analytical framework for understanding how mobility is an inherent part of such changes. The book demonstrates how current neoliberal policies are making people increasingly on the move - whether voluntarily or forced, and whether individually, as family, or as whole communities - and how such mobility is changing the livelihoods of indigenous people, with particular focus on how these transformations are gendered. It queries how state policies and cross-border and cross-regional connections have shaped and redefined the livelihood patterns, rights and citizenship, identities, and gender relations of indigenous peoples. This book explores an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of gender and development studies, disaster and land tenure policy. It is well known that women generally have weaker claims to land. But how does that translate to increased vulnerability during disaster? Using case studies from Asia, this book argues that land tenure is a key factor in mitigating the impact of disasters on women. The scale and frequency of disasters have been increasing in recent decades due to human impact on the landscape and climate. Unsustainable farming and land management systems have increased environmental risks and social vulnerabilities. However, around the world the costs of disasters are disproportionately borne by women, due largely to their reduced mobility and lack of control over assets. In post-disaster settings, women's vulnerabilities increase due to gendered rescue and rehabilitation practices. As such, a gendered approach to land rights is critical to disaster preparedness and recovery.

The study focuses on the effects of incomes from the cross-border workers on their families in original country. Incomes from cross-border works have been proven to be very important resources for the family of cross-border workers. It helps smoothing the daily necessary expenses and eases investment in human capital. The study also shows that even though women are the budget managers in the family, they just have decisive role for daily petty spending. For bigger expenses, men are the final decision makers. In addition, even though involving in productive works as men, women are still expected to fulfill reproductive works. Therefore, women's burden is increased; they have to adjust to fulfill two tasks. Besides, the study also shows that although income from cross-border works helps women have more economic contribution to their households, the gender relation in the household does not change much; men are still the head of the households because of the influence of ethnic norms and socially constructed gender norms. However, it can help women have better attitute from their husbands.

Millions of Burmese women migrate into Thailand each year to form the basis of the Thai agricultural and manufacturing workforce.
