The first book deals comprehensively with the use of the short sword, bayonet, staves and various other clubs and even gives instruction on personal defence using everyday items such as umbrellas. The second book is a classic monograph on fighting-not necessarily according to the rules of modern sport-when both opponents are armed with sharp edged weapons, this provides an interesting insight into a time when combat was invariably fought 'eye to eye.' Das Bewusstsein kann faktisch nur einen Bruchteil der tatsachlichen Moglichkeiten der Wahrnehmung realisieren, und somit ist Aufmerksamkeit zur knappen Ressource geworden. Die Medienwissenschaften haben sich in den letzten Jahren deshalb in die Diskussion um Aufmerksamkeit, die innerhalb des Konzepts der Okonomie der Aufmerksamkeit den Status eines umkampften Guts, einer wichtigen Wahrung erhalten hat, vertieft. Zunachst versuche ich einige der gangigen Definitions- und Diskussionsansatze wiederzugeben, gehe auf die Selektion unseres Bewusstseins ein und auf die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit, die als die wichtigste unter den Sinneswahrnehmungen gilt, insbesondere im Hinblick auf Fernsehen, Computer, Virtuelle Welten, Cyberspace etc. Im letzten Abschnitt mochte ich herausarbeiten, wie Medien um unsere Aufmerksamkeit kampfen und unsere Reaktion hierauf.

Im Fokus stehen hierbei junge Madchen, die mit neuen Idealen und Kuturraumen konfrontiert werden und wahrend des Zusammentreffens ihren Horizont und ihr Toleranzvermogen erweitern. Zunachst beschaftige ich mich mit der TV-Serie Turkisch fur Anfanger, in der die deutsche Lena mit der turkischen Yagmur zusammenleben muss und sich beide Madchen erst nach vielen Schwierigkeiten so akzeptieren, wie sie sind. Daraufhin ziehe ich Aygen-Sibel Celiks Jugendroman Seidenhaar hinzu. Auf der Suche nach der verschwundenen Canan lernt die Protagonistin Sinem den Islam kennen und verwirft auf dieser Entdeckungsreise viele Vorurteile, die sie als Turkin selber hatte. Im Schlussteil mochte ich beide Darstellungen miteinander vergleichen, da einige Gemeinsamkeiten bestehen, und die Botschaft jeweils die gleiche ist: Entwicklung zu gegenseitiger Toleranz und Akzeptanz fremder Kulturen.
