When a deceased southern Appalachian grandmother delivers a
mysterious message to her adult granddaughter in a waking dream,
she sparks a mystical adventure that helps the young woman turn her
life around. "The Garden of a Desert Rose," a spiritual novel, is a
modern-day, Jungian takeoff on "A Christmas Carol," in which
Scrooge is a sweet-natured, Southern single mother (in red
snakeskin heels, no less) who spouts Bible verses and basic Jungian
concepts with equal enthusiasm.
Feeling defeated by her life choices, thirty-two-year-old,
twice-divorced Lenny has little energy for launching a journey of
self-discovery. Raising two children and holding down a job as a
secretary for the coaching staff of the University of Tennessee
football team keeps her days busy. But Lenny's nights open a portal
to a series of vivid, lucid dreams overflowing with rich archetypal
images. Buoyed by the support of friends and her unflagging sense
of humor, Lenny sees her inner desert transform into a blossoming
oasis with one final Christmas Eve dream.
This is a work of "real-fiction" that tries to capture the
reality behind the known world. The tools in author Deborah L.
Kelley's hand are her colorful imagination and a lifetime of
personal happenings, visions, and spirit communications. Inspired
by C. G. Jung's writings encouraging people to discover their
personal myths, Kelley imagined her own myth to the surface. She
named her hero Lenny and, with many additional archetypes dancing
in her head, revisited Christmas of 1982. It was a time in her own
life in which profound mental transformations took place. "The
Garden of a Desert Rose" is a novel that seeks to ignite in your
own imagination a deeper awareness of the myth you've been
living.
The current political trend toward a drastically reduced
government role in the economy and civil society begs a thorough
discussion of the recent history of the free market movement in the
United States. By providing a history of the political
revitalization of classical liberalism since the 1960s, Bringing
the Market Back In makes a significant step in understanding this
discussion. When the market liberals came to power with the
election of Ronald Reagan, they failed to translate their economic
theories into dramatic political change. Although market liberals
had developed remarkable intellectual strengths by 1980, the
political movement to roll back the state was still in its infancy.
The Gingrich Revolution of 1994 suggests that a better test of
market liberalism's political feasibility may come in the last half
of the 1990's.
Moving beyond the political polemics so common in the arena of
contemporary economic policy, Kelley grounds his study in the
little-known archival materials from the Libertarian Party and
personal collections from the Hoover Institution Archives.
This is a systematic exposition of the basic part of the theory of
mea sure and integration. The book is intended to be a usable text
for students with no previous knowledge of measure theory or
Lebesgue integration, but it is also intended to include the
results most com monly used in functional analysis. Our two
intentions are some what conflicting, and we have attempted a
resolution as follows. The main body of the text requires only a
first course in analysis as background. It is a study of abstract
measures and integrals, and comprises a reasonably complete account
of Borel measures and in tegration for R Each chapter is generally
followed by one or more supplements. These, comprising over a third
of the book, require some what more mathematical background and
maturity than the body of the text (in particular, some knowledge
of general topology is assumed) and the presentation is a little
more brisk and informal. The material presented includes the theory
of Borel measures and integration for n, the general theory of
integration for locally compact Hausdorff spaces, and the first
dozen results about invariant measures for groups. Most of the
results expounded here are conventional in general character, if
not in detail, but the methods are less so. The following brief
overview may clarify this assertion."
This classic book is a systematic exposition of general topology. It is especially intended as background for modern analysis. Based on lectures given at the University of Chicago, the University of California and Tulane University, this book is intended to be a reference and a text. As a reference work, it offers a reasonably complete coverage of the area, and this has resulted in a more extended treatment than would normally be given in a course. As a text, however, the exposition in the eariler chapters proceeds at a more pedestrian pace. A preliminary chapter covers those topics requisite to the main body of work.
Communicating Forgiveness is the first book to take a truly
communicative look at the process of forgiveness. Authors Vincent
R. Waldron and Douglas L. Kelley provide a synthesis of the
literature on forgiveness in relationships. Grounded in real-life
forgiveness narratives, this interdisciplinary text (pulling from
such related fields as psychology, counseling, family studies,
peace studies, conflict management, religious studies, and
organizational behavior) offers a hopeful framework for negotiating
healthy and just responses to relational disappointments. Key
Features Conceptualizes forgiveness as communication: Offering an
alternative to predominant psychological approaches, this is the
first book to focus on specific communication behaviors associated
with forgiveness. Provides an emotional connection: Real- life
narratives from long-term couples, friends, family members, and
coworkers make the text readable and relevant to today's
relationships. Includes a chapter on the practice of forgiveness:
Practical advice and specific guidelines resonate well with readers
as they apply to genuine friendships, romances, families, and
workplaces. Offers path-breaking theory development: The book
organizes existing forgiveness research around a descriptive
communication framework, demonstrating how existing psychological
research can be enriched through the application of communication
theories. Presents a highly personal closing chapter: In the final
chapter the authors provide a personal account of their experiences
as researchers through "On the Drive Home" vignettes that convey
key lessons learned. Intended Audience This is an excellent
supplemental text for a variety of advanced undergraduate and
graduate courses such as Conflict Management, Interpersonal
Communication, Family Communication, Communication in Personal
Relationships, Psychology of Personal Relationships, Counseling,
and Peace Studies in the departments of Communication, Psychology,
Family Studies, and Counseling.
A Communicative Approach to Conflict, Forgiveness, and
Reconciliation: Reimagining Our Relationships synthesizes
communication and psychology scholarship that focuses on rebuilding
ourselves and our relationships when things go "wrong". It provides
fresh insights into the burgeoning body of forgiveness research,
with an emphasis on community application and reconciliation.
Written by award winning scholars in forgiveness communication, the
book makes forgiveness and reconciliation research accessible to
students in courses focused on personal relationships, conflict,
and family studies.

Like many European Jews, Sam Iwry began his life in Poland, but at
the age of ten fled with his family to Russia before World War I.
At age 29, Iwry was forced to flee again - this time from the
Soviets - and ended up in Shanghai, China, joining 20,000 Jewish
refugees who were there. The story of the Diaspora caused by the
Holocaust is well-known, but the Far Eastern dimension has come to
light only very recently. Iwry is a magnificent storyteller who not
only brings the harrowing details of flight and survival into vivid
detail, but he is also an historian who deliberately places his own
experiences into much wider context. This oral history sheds light
on Jewish life in Eastern Europe during the inter-war period, the
search for a safe haven from Nazis and Soviets, daily life in the
Shanghai ghetto, and emigration to America. Iwry's story is both
representative of the Jewish experience and also completely unique.
