Becoming Biliterate - Identity, Ideology, and Learning to Read and Write in Two Languages (Hardcover, New): George L. Campbell Becoming Biliterate - Identity, Ideology, and Learning to Read and Write in Two Languages (Hardcover, New)
George L. Campbell
R4,732 Discovery Miles 47 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through the real-life context of one child learning to be bilingual and biliterate, this book raises questions and provides a context for pre-service and practicing teachers to understand and reflect on how children learn to read and write in multiple languages. Highlighting the social and cognitive advantages of biliteracy, its purpose is to help teachers better understand the complexity by which young children become biliterate as they actively construct meaning and work through tensions resulting from their everyday life circumstances. Perspectives regarding identity and language ideologies are presented to help teachers refine their own pedagogical approaches to teaching linguistically diverse children. Readers are engaged in understanding early biliteracy through a process of articulating and questioning their own assumptions and beliefs about learning in multiple languages and literacies.

Testing and Assessment in Counseling Practice (Paperback, 2nd edition): Vicki L. Campbell, C. Edward Watkins Jr Testing and Assessment in Counseling Practice (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Vicki L. Campbell, C. Edward Watkins Jr
R2,456 Discovery Miles 24 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The primary purpose of this revision remains identical to that of the first edition--to show how key personality, cognitive/behavioral, and vocational tests/assessment procedures can be used by counselors in their work with clients. Too often, assessment books only provide the reader with information about tests and assessment procedures. They do not, however, take the next step--showing readers how these tests/assessment procedures can be used and integrated into the actual work of counseling. This revision is designed to fill that void. Chapter authors, all of whom are experts in their respective topic areas, share the theoretical and research backgrounds about a particular test/assessment procedure and then provide a case example or examples to show how assessment data can be meaningfully incorporated into the counseling process.

The Paradox of Vulnerability - States, Nationalism, and the Financial Crisis (Paperback): John L. Campbell, John A. Hall The Paradox of Vulnerability - States, Nationalism, and the Financial Crisis (Paperback)
John L. Campbell, John A. Hall
R761 R721 Discovery Miles 7 210 Save R40 (5%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why are small and culturally homogeneous nation-states in the advanced capitalist world so prosperous? Examining how Denmark, Ireland, and Switzerland managed the 2008 financial crisis, The Paradox of Vulnerability shows that this is not an accident. John Campbell and John Hall argue that a prolonged sense of vulnerability within both the state and the nation encourages the development of institutions that enable decision makers to act together quickly in order to survive, especially during a crisis. Blending insights from studies of comparative political economy and nationalism and drawing on both extensive interviews and secondary data, Campbell and Hall support their claim by focusing on the three states historically and, more important, in their different responses to the 2008 crisis. The authors also devote attention to the difficulties faced by Greece and Iceland. The implications of their argument are profound. First, they show that there is a positive side to nationalism: social solidarity can enhance national prosperity. Second, because globalization now requires all states to become more adaptable, there are lessons here for other states, large and small. Lastly, the formula for prosperity presented here is under threat: highly homogeneous societies face challenges in dealing with immigration, with some responding in ways that threaten their success. The Paradox of Vulnerability demonstrates how the size and culture of a nation contribute in significant ways to its ability to handle political and economic pressures and challenges.

Modeling and Simulation with Compose and Activate (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Stephen L. Campbell, Ramine Nikoukhah Modeling and Simulation with Compose and Activate (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Stephen L. Campbell, Ramine Nikoukhah
R3,553 Discovery Miles 35 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a tutorial in the use of Altair Compose and Altair Activate, software packages that provide system modeling and simulation facilities. Advanced system modeling software provide multiple ways of creating models: models can be programmed in specialized languages, graphically constructed as block-diagrams and state machines, or expressed mathematically in equation-based languages. Compose and Activate are introduced in this text in two parts. The first part introduces the multi-language environment of Compose and its use for modeling, simulation and optimization. The second describes the graphical system modeling and optimization with Activate, an open-system environment providing signal-based modeling as well as physical system component-based modeling. Throughout both parts are applied examples from mechanical, biological, and electrical systems, as well as control and signal processing systems. This book will be an invaluable addition with many examples both for those just interested in OML and those doing industrial scale modeling, simulation, and design. All examples are worked using the free basic editions of Activate and Compose that are available.

This book identifies 200 of the most important of these works, and describes them vividly and informatively in ways that reveal how each is a key object in its own right - a creation that commemorates a great event or heralds the start of a new era in creativity or politics. From coins of the fifth century bce to pottery made at the time of the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 ce, each object reveals an important insight into this highly influential ancient civilization.
