Boon L. Lee
R2,528 Discovery Miles 25 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Productivity and Efficiency Measurement of Airlines: Data Development Analysis using R identifies and explains the best strategies for measuring airline performance. Each chapter measures airline performance through the model of data envelopment analysis (DEA), as well as other models, such as the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA), where applicable. The book thoroughly discusses topics such as financial performance, greenhouse gas management, and complex airline data analysis, employing appropriate models for each. Model methodologies are also discussed, making this in-depth coverage useful for all audiences, including students with a basic understanding of models, researchers and airline operators and management. Users will find codes for various data software that will help them generate results and quantify efficient practices. These results provide airline decision-makers with the essential information they need to create better policies and avoid underperforming practices.

Service life estimation is an area of growing importance in civil engineering both for determining the remaining service life of civil engineering structures and for designing new structural systems with well-defined periods of functionality. Service life estimation and extension of civil engineering structures provides valuable information on the development and use of newer and more durable materials and methods of construction, as well as the development and use of new techniques of estimating service life. Part one discusses using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to extend the service-life of civil engineering structures. It considers the key issues in the use of FRP composites, examines the possibility of extending the service life of structurally deficient and deteriorating concrete structures and investigates the uncertainties of using FRP composites in the rehabilitation of civil engineering structures. Part two discusses estimating the service life of civil engineering structures including modelling service life and maintenance strategies and probabilistic methods for service life estimation. It goes on to investigate non-destructive evaluation and testing (NDE/NDT) as well as databases and knowledge-based systems for service life estimation of rehabilitated civil structures and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors Service life estimation and extension of civil engineering structures is an invaluable resource to academics, civil engineers, construction companies, infrastructure providers and all those with an interest in improving the service life, safety and reliability of civil engineering structures.

Young Paulter adores the Grand Court Wizard, Galdar and in secrecy serves as his apprentice. When Galdar is poisoned, the stage is set for a race against time in which Paulter must be ordained by the source of magic "the Heart." This is an imperative and time-honored procedure that will allow him to become the next Grand Court Wizard. Evil Ronar pulls out all the stops in an effort to stop Paulter from reaching his lofty goal. Ronar feels that the timing is perfect to make his attempt at overtaking their world while Galdar is no longer there to protect them. He creates a massive army that threatens the very existence of the Faerie world and will eventually annihilate all the other races one at a time. With the help of some unlikely friends, Paulter struggles to reach the Heart and put an end to the senseless carnage that Ronar is willing to inflict on anyone standing in his way. However, there are still other issues that Paulter must deal with, including the search to find the murderer of his friend and mentor, Galdar. This is a story of the struggle between good and evil, but also, the emergence of a man who is destined to play a powerful role in the care of the races that comprise his world. The friends who help him, all have different roles to play and both collectively and individually help Paulter to realize how important friends can be.

In Greek geometry, there is an arithmetic of magnitudes in which, in terms of numbers, only integers are involved. This theory of measure is limited to exact measure. Operations on magnitudes cannot be actually numerically calculated, except if those magnitudes are exactly measured by a certain unit. The theory of proportions does not have access to such operations. It cannot be seen as an "arithmetic" of ratios. Even if Euclidean geometry is done in a highly theoretical context, its axioms are essentially semantic. This is contrary to Mahoney's second characteristic. This cannot be said of the theory of proportions, which is less semantic. Only synthetic proofs are considered rigorous in Greek geometry. Arithmetic reasoning is also synthetic, going from the known to the unknown. Finally, analysis is an approach to geometrical problems that has some algebraic characteristics and involves a method for solving problems that is different from the arithmetical approach. 3. GEOMETRIC PROOFS OF ALGEBRAIC RULES Until the second half of the 19th century, Euclid's Elements was considered a model of a mathematical theory. This may be one reason why geometry was used by algebraists as a tool to demonstrate the accuracy of rules otherwise given as numerical algorithms. It may also be that geometry was one way to represent general reasoning without involving specific magnitudes. To go a bit deeper into this, here are three geometric proofs of algebraic rules, the frrst by Al-Khwarizmi, the other two by Cardano.

R3,158 Discovery Miles 31 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The rapidly developing new economies in China, India, Hungary, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, etc., are at the crossroads of almost all major supply chains. In fact, these emerging economies are growing faster than the established industrial economies of the world. However, given the physical, social and cultural characteristics of the emerging economies, managing supply chains there could be even more challenging than in developed economies. How can we manage supply chains well in emerging economies, coordinate information flows with multiple partners, tackle challenges such as unexpected disruptions, diversify the risks and increase flexibilities, be efficient but at the same time contribute to the social and environmental developments of these economies, and use supply chain concepts and practices to improve the economic welfare of these countries, such as basic infrastructure developments and disaster relief, are the topics and issues of the book. insights on the answers to the above questions and will enable practitioners to gain insights on the developments, challenges and opportunities when operating supply chains in emerging economies. Innovative approaches are outlined and illustrated with examples of real-world experiences by progressive companies and thought leaders. We also hope that this collection will stimulate researchers to gain deeper understanding and develop methods in operating supply chains in emerging economies. We have organized the book in three key sections. overall framework in managing global supply chains and developing strategies; Supply Chain Management in Emerging Economies: where 'Challenges and Opportunities' describes the challenges and opportunities in supply chain management of emerging economies - the infrastructure constraints, the logistics inefficiencies, and limitations in service operations, and discusses how to create opportunities in such adverse conditions; and, Building Supply Chain Excellence: where 'Innovations and Success Cases' is devoted to a number of industrial cases that showcase innovative approaches to gain excellence, and share insights and lessons from such experiences.

This volume in the AAPS Advances series covers various quality, safety and clinical aspects of drug development that are relevant to new and/or generic drugs containing a complex mixture of molecules. Specific topics discussed include: raw materials sourcing; manufacturing controls; characterization; identification of critical product quality components and attributes; identification of impurities, particularly as they bear on toxicity and immunogenicity; clinical trial study design considerations, and the regulatory science applications to development of such complex mixtures. Complex mixtures are challenging to characterize and analyze using standard methods. Further challenges extend throughout the product development cycle from raw material control to clinical study design. The regulatory landscape is rapidly changing as new types of complex mixtures are introduced into clinical trials and to the market (e.g., traditional Chinese medicines and medical marijuana products), while older products are facing generic competition for the first time (e.g., enoxaparin). The future outlook for complex generic drug products, as opposed to the more commonly developed targeted single agent drug products is not clear. The risks pertaining to lack of a full understanding of raw material control, process and controls in manufacture, as well as characterization of a complex mixture were seen vividly during the heparin crisis of 2008. As such powerful lessons have been learned about the regulatory science specific to complex products. The Science and Regulations of Naturally Derived Complex Drugs addresses the interests among industry, academics, and government on the issues surrounding the future development of mixtures for medicinal use.
