An agent of chaos and deceit, the trickster has been a favorite
character type in stories spanning thousands of years and multiple
peoples. From legends belonging to Native Americans such as the
Creek, Natchez, Seminole and Catawba, to those across the sea to
Africa and Europe, this work has compiled 73 trickster tales into
one volume. Beginning with Creek tales, this work continues with a
blend of Native American and African American folktales, organized
according to the indigenous people who told them. These stories
include the American Southeast's most notorious trickster, Rabbit;
his gullible victims such as Alligator, Wildcat and Wolf; and other
tricksters such as Buzzard, Pig, Possum and more.
Retelling 30 myths and legends of the Eastern Cherokee, this book
presents the stories with important details providing a culturally
authentic and historically accurate context. Background information
given within each story so the reader may avoid reliance on
glossaries, endnotes, or other explanatory aids. The reader may
thus experience the stories more as their original audiences would
have. This approach to adapting traditional literature derives from
ideas found in reader response and translation theory, and from
research in cognitive psychology and sociolinguistics.
This is a general interest trade book that describes the
development of automotive technology and engineering from the start
of the industry before 1900 to the present day. It explains how
various systems and elements in the automobile work in layman's
terms, without resorting to mathematics, and highlights the
keymilestones in the historical development of automotive
technology. All photos and illustrations are in full color. The
intended audience is older teens to adults of any age who are
interested in the subject and may be involved in it as a hobby.
Sometimes referred to as "gearheads" or "motorheads", they form a
huge market. Over the years many of the author's engineering
students were in this category, and he often would meet with
on-campus car clubs to explain the way things automotive worked,
being careful to damp down or eliminate any complicated
mathematics, as he does in this book. An Internet search found only
titles that are either "hard-engineering oriented" -- such as
publications from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) -- or
mere compendiums of dates. Books in the latter category note the
milestones but without hardly any explanation at all of how these
developments actually work in a technical sense - which is the aim
of this book. "Automotive Milestones, by Robert L. Norton, is about
all the mechanisms that are needed in an automobile and how they
work. The book consists of eight main chapters, each one covering a
major mechanical system of the automobile plus a summary chapter
and appendices. There are numerous photographs and illustrations
used throughout the book to support the concepts discussed. The
author has thoroughly researched the subject and leaves the reader
with a new appreciation of what has been tried over the nearly 250
years of automobile history. The book is logically organized and
clearly explained in a way that only a person with in-depth
knowledge could do. His latest book is Automotive Milestones which
provides the cornerstones of a thorough understanding of automobile
technology. If you are just looking for a general understanding of
the automobile, looking for inspiration in support of a new idea,
or just want a concise history of automotive milestones, this book
is a must read."-Parker Ackley, Antique Automobile Enthusiast Did
you ever wonder?... Who formed the first automobile company in
America? When and who made the first fully automatic transmission?
(Hint: it was not GM in 1939) What is the difference between sprung
and unsprung weight in a car, and why does it matter? When did the
frame of a car get replaced by the unibody? How does a differential
work? It took more than 100 years to develop the modern automobile.
This book presents a very readable and informative description of
this evolution. The author, Robert Norton, is an engineer with many
years of experience in the design of machinery. Automotive
Milestomes is a clear presentation of the internal workings of the
automobile over the years. No matter whether you are a seasoned car
buff or just curious to learn more about the history of cars, you
will enjoy reading this book.-William J. Crochetiere, Professor
Emeritus, Tufts University Robert L. Norton, P.E. has 50 years
experience in the practice and teaching of mechanical engineering.
He holds undergraduate degrees in mechanical engineering and
industrial technology from Northeastern University, and a M.S. in
engineering design from Tufts University. Having designed cams for
camera mechanisms at Polaroid Corporation, he subsequently spent
many years doing design work at Gillette and many other companies.
He taught kinematics, dynamics, stress analysis, and machine design
to mechanical engineering students for more than 40 years at
Northeastern, Tufts, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he
is theMilton Prince Higgins II Distinguished Professor Emeritus of
Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, he has published many
technical papers and holds 13 U.S. patents. He is a member of the

Offering timely guidance on the junction of the opioid crisis and
infectious diseases, this practical handbook by Dr. Brianna L.
Norton provides concise yet comprehensive coverage of a growing
patient population. Infectious disease specialists are increasingly
seeing patients who previously used opiods and now use intravenous
drugs. Many challenges are unique to this patient population,
including new and growing infections such as hepatitis C,
endocarditis, HIV, and hepatitis B. The Opioid Epidemic and
Infectious Diseases is an up-to-date, real-world guide that covers
the scope of the problem, management guidelines, and much more.
Describes the new landscape of the opioid crisis in the U.S. and
its intersection with infectious diseases, including epidemiology,
Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and rural America, and more. Offers
practical guidance on (OUD) and infectious co-morbidities like
hepatitis C, STDs, endocarditis, HIV, and hepatitis B. Covers
prevention, treatment, and harm reduction. Discusses OUD,
infectious diseases, and the criminal justice system. Consolidates
today's available information and guidance into a single,
convenient resource.
Solid guidance for the complex legal issues faced by international
nonprofits
When a nonprofit operates across borders, whether by making
grants or directly operating programs, the interaction among legal
requirements of two or more countries quickly becomes highly
complex. "How To Be A Global Nonprofit" fills a need for legal and
practical guidance for nonprofit organizations with international
activities, and includes ten case studies to provide insights into
the ways real organizations have dealt with various legal and
practical issues.
Along the way, it skillfully explores alternatives for advancing
a nonprofit's mission across borders, while also looking at the
legal and practical issues nonprofits encounter as they work
internationally.Includes ten case studies based on interviews with
large and small international nonprofitsOffers a realistic sense of
the complexity of legal and practical issues global nonprofits
faceFeatures a companion website with a variety of online tools and
materials related to key concepts discussed in this book
Not long ago international philanthropy was the province of
large organizations like the Red Cross, UNICEF, and Save the
Children. This has radically changed. "How to Be a Global
Nonprofit" thoroughly explores the legal and practical issues
nonprofits encounter as they work internationally and the resources
required to deal with them.

What is the meaning of life? Modern professional philosophy has
largely renounced the attempt to answer this question and has
restricted itself to the pursuit of more esoteric truths. Not so
David Norton. Following in the footsteps of Plato and Aristotle,
Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, Jung and Maslow, he sets forth a
distinctive vision of the individual's search for his place in the
scheme of things. Norton's theory of individualism is rooted in the
eudaimonistic ethics of the Creeks, who viewed each person as
innately possessing a unique potential it was his destiny to
fulfill. Very much the same idea resurfaced in modern times with
the British idealists and Continental existentialists. The author
reviews these antecedents, showing how his theory differs from
those of his predecessors. After a fascinating chapter on "The
Stages of Life," Norton shows how the mature consciousness of one's
destiny leads to direct, intimate knowledge of other persons, and
how this in turn provides the basis for social morality. The
conception of justice in which this theory culminates, rooted as it
is in essential human differences, provides a challenging
alternative to the much-discussed theories of Rawls and Nozick.
