Throughout the Western world, the relationship between gender,
science and math ematics has emerged as critical in a variety of
contexts. In tertiary institutions, the study of "gender issues,"
frequently with reference to science and mathematics, is of central
significance to many disciplines. Gender studies are being offered
as sepa rate courses or parts of existing courses in preservice and
postgraduate teacher edu cation, women's studies, technology
studies and policy studies. In addition, in the broader context of
education at all levels from primary/elementary through to higher,
concerned policy-makers and practitioners frequently focus on the
interaction of gender, science and mathematics in their attempts to
reform and improve education for all students. In all of these
contexts, there is an urgent need for suitable texts, both to
provide resources for teachers and students and to inform
policy-makers and practitioners. This book has been developed
specifically to meet this need. It is designed to be used
throughout the world in a variety of tertiary courses and by
policy-makers concerned with activities which interface with the
gender/science/mathematics rela tionship. It provides examples
which illustrate vividly the rich field from which practitioners
and policy-makers in this area now can draw. Its particular appeal
will stem from its practical approach and creative future
perspective, the international renown of the authors and the
generalisability of the recent research and thinking presented in
each of the chapters."

`This book offers a truly engaging "read". The writing style is
good and it gives the reader a wide range of perspectives, from the
meta-theoretical to the concrete practical experience of clients
and counsellors.... David Rennie's book serves to continue the
development as well as the exposition of the person-centred
approach to counselling' - British Journal of Guidance and
Counselling `This is a very good book... clearly within the
humanistic/experiential tradition... It seems to me to be very
important that this kind of research continues - it is the raw data
of the counselling profession' - Person-Centred Practice This book
contains powerful new ideas about person-centred theory and
practice. Supported by intensive qualitative research into the
client's experience of counselling, the book highlights the
significance and pervasiveness of reflexivity - defined as
self-awareness and agency within that self-awareness - and explores
surprising ways in which clients contribute reflexively to the
counselling process. Vivid examples highlight activities, show the
therapy in action and illustrate how counsellors can use their own
experiences creatively to facilitate their attunement to
themselves, their clients and their relationships with them. The
theoretical framework covers matters such as the use of images and
metaphor, counsellor transparency and the assistance of clients'
agency. Emphasis is placed on the client/counsellor relationship
through such crucial areas as the working alliance, power dynamics
and metacommunication.
This book contains powerful new ideas about person-centered theory and practice. Supported by intensive qualitative research into the clientÆs experience of counseling, Person Centered Counselling highlights the significance and pervasiveness of reflexivityùdefined as self-awareness and agency within that self-awarenessùand explores surprising ways in which clients contribute reflexively to the counseling process. Vivid examples highlight activities, show the therapy in action, and illustrate how counselors can use their own experiences creatively to facilitate their attunement to themselves, their clients, and their relationships with them. The theoretical framework of the book covers matters such as the use of images and metaphor, counselor transparency and the assistance of clientsÆ agency, while emphasis is placed on the client/counselor relationship through such crucial areas as the working alliance, power dynamics, and metacommunication. This volume is highly practical with language that is connected closely with the thoughts, feelings, and actions of clients, counselors and counselor trainees. The concepts it applies have implications for all levels of practice and all forms not only of person-centered and experiential counseling but many other approaches to counseling and therapy as well.
If you're looking for practical ways to do therapy research, then Psychotherapy Process Research is the book for you. It offers the latest developments in psychotherapy process research and the implications for clinical practice. It is unique in that equal weight is given to the paradigmatic and the narrative approaches to explanation. The contributions exemplify both relatively "pure" uses of either approach and the joint application of each in the same research endeavor. Each mode is seen to be especially suited to explaining a particular aspect of the overall therapeutic process, and so the question arises as to whether or not the two approaches can be integrated. At various points throughout the volume, and particularly in the concluding chapter, this question is addressed in terms of the implicit assumption supporting each approach. Psychotherapy Process Research is an essential research tool for researchers, professionals, and graduate students in clinical psychology, qualitative methods, psychology, social work, and methodology/research. "This volume is an excellent addition to what appears to be a rebirth of research into the process of psychotherapy. What is particularly intriguing about this contribution is its methodological pluralism, containing both positivistic approaches and more subjective, narrative methods. Taken together, both are used in a complementary fashion to shed light on the central question in process research, namely how psychotherapy brings about change." --Marvin Goldfried, Department of Psychology, SUNY at Stony Brook
