Out of Context – How to Avoid Misinterpreting the Bible (Paperback, New): Richard L. Schultz Out of Context – How to Avoid Misinterpreting the Bible (Paperback, New)
Richard L. Schultz
R449 Discovery Miles 4 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although 92% of American households own at least one Bible, their use of the Bible varies significantly. Only 59% of Americans read the Bible at least occasionally, and an even smaller percentage go beyond merely reading the Bible and actually study it. It is no wonder that even those who say they read the Scriptures often don't understand them.
Veteran Bible professor Richard L. Schultz believes the misinterpretation and misapplication of biblical texts amounts to a crisis of "interpretive malpractice." In "Out of Context" he seeks to explain how biblical interpretation goes wrong and how to get it right. He introduces readers to the important concepts of context, word meaning, genre, and the differences between the world of the Bible and our own. Readers who delve into the fascinating world of biblical interpretation found in this book will find their Scripture reading enhanced and be enlightened by Schultz's powerful and ultimately positive message.

"Contributes[s] interesting new dimensions to the literature on Jews and blacks in the United States."
--"The Journal of American History"

"A fascinating text which adds to our understanding of recent Jewish Left and feminist politics and activism"
"--Australian Jewish News, Aug. 2001"

"Blending together 15 oral histories and archival research, Schultz shows how northern Jewish women's commitment to social justice - informed in part by living in the shadow of the Holocaust - played out in a time of enormous political, social, and personal upheaval...Sharply observant of her informants' lives, Schultz opens a new window not only into the civil rights movement but also into the sociology of mid-century Jewish-American culture. Her analysis is most impressive at the book's end, when she perceptively describes the protean nature of Jewish identities in the U.S. Such insightful cultural readings and criticism make this a fine contribution to both the literature of the civil rights movement and the field of Jewish studies."
"--Publishers Weekly"

"Schultz's book makes a substantial contribution to feminist scholarship, but in the end it is also a call to renewed action - to never forget the sacrifices of previous generations."
--"The Journal of Southern History"

"A well-written, serious, and important book. I learned a great deal from this interesting and rich study."
"--Joyce Antler, author of The Journey Home: How Jewish Women Shaped Modern America"

""Going South" is a heartfelt plea for incorporating women's activism into social movement history."
--Linn Shapiro, "American Jewish History"

"Going South is aremarkable book, reflecting the experiences of fifteen women who joined the 1960s civil rights movement showing how and why they got there, what role, if any religion played in their lives, and what happened to them afterwards."
--"Journal of American Studies"

"The strength of the book is that it is based on interviews; the reader is introduced to each women, her family, the work she performed in the South, the people she met and the difficulties she overcame while there."--"Jewish Observer"

Many people today know that the 1964 murder in Mississippi of two Jewish men--Mickey Schwerner and Andrew Goodman--and their Black colleague, James Chaney, marked one of the most wrenching episodes of the civil rights movement. Yet very few realize that Andrew Goodman had been in Mississippi for one day when he was killed; Rita Schwerner, Mickey's wife, had been organizing in Mississippi for six difficult months.

Organized around a rich blend of oral histories, Going South followsa group of Jewish women--come of age in the shadow of the Holocaust and deeply committed to social justice--who put their bodies and lives on the line to fight racism. Actively rejecting the post-war idyll of suburban, Jewish, middle-class life, these women were deeply influenced by Jewish notions of morality and social justice. Many thus perceived the call of the movement as positively irresistible.

Representing a link between the sensibilities of the early civil rights era and contemporary efforts to move beyond the limits of identity politics, the book provides a resource for all who are interested in anti-racism, the civil rights movement, social justice, Jewish activism and radical women's traditions.

From 1976 to the beginning of the millennium-covering the quarter-century life span of this book and its predecessor-something remarkable has happened to market response research: it has become practice. Academics who teach in professional fields, like we do, dream of such things. Imagine the satisfaction of knowing that your work has been incorporated into the decision-making routine of brand managers, that category management relies on techniques you developed, that marketing management believes in something you struggled to establish in their minds. It's not just us that we are talking about. This pride must be shared by all of the researchers who pioneered the simple concept that the determinants of sales could be found if someone just looked for them. Of course, economists had always studied demand. But the project of extending demand analysis would fall to marketing researchers, now called marketing scientists for good reason, who saw that in reality the marketing mix was more than price; it was advertising, sales force effort, distribution, promotion, and every other decision variable that potentially affected sales. The bibliography of this book supports the notion that the academic research in marketing led the way. The journey was difficult, sometimes halting, but ultimately market response research advanced and then insinuated itself into the fabric of modern management.

A Companion to the Works of Stefan George (Paperback, New): Jens Rieckmann A Companion to the Works of Stefan George (Paperback, New)
Jens Rieckmann; Contributions by Jeffrey Todd, Jens Rieckmann, Karla L. Schultz, Marita Keilson-Lauritz, …
R942 Discovery Miles 9 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New, wide-ranging essays on the controversial poet, who was both a harbinger of Modernism and a critic of modernity. Stefan George (1868-1933) is along with Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Rainer Maria Rilke one of the pre-eminent German poets of the twentieth century. He also had an important, albeit controversial and provocative role in German cultural history. It is generally agreed that he played a significant part in the transition of German literature to Modernism, particularly in poetry. At the same time he was an outspoken critic of modernity. He believed that only anall-encompassing cultural renewal could save modern man. Although George is often linked with the l'art pour l'art movement, and although his artistic consciousness was formed by European aestheticism, his poetry and the writings that emerged from the poets and intellectuals he gathered around him in the George Circle are above all a scathing commentary on the political, social, and cultural situation in Germany at the turn of the century. George, who was imbued with the idea of the poet as a prophet and priest, saw himself as the Messiah of a New Hellenism and a New Reich led by an intellectual and aesthetic elite consisting of men who were bonded together through their allegiance to a charismatic leader. Some of the values that George proclaimed, among them a glorification of power, of heroism and self-sacrifice, were seized upon by the National Socialists, and subsequently his writings andthose of his circle were considered by some to be proto-fascist. It did not help his reputation that after the Second World War much of the criticism of his works was practiced by uncritical, hagiographic George worshippers. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed and unbiased interest among scholars and critics in George and his circle. The wide-ranging and original essays in this volume explore anew George's poetry and his contribution to Modernism, the relation between his vision of a New Reich and fascist ideology, and his importance as a cultural critic. Jens Rieckmann is Professor of German at the University of California, Irvine.

A Companion to Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain (Paperback, New edition): Stephen D Dowden A Companion to Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain (Paperback, New edition)
Stephen D Dowden; Contributions by David Blumberg, Edward Engelberg, Eugene Goodheart, Joseph Lawrence, …
R1,104 Discovery Miles 11 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Volume offering a guide to and reassessment of Thomas Mann's famous novel. Thomas Mann was the first writer since Goethe to attract a large international audience to stories written in German, bringing German fiction into the mainstream of European literature. His second major work, The Magic Mountain (1924), explores the heady intellectual culture of the chaotic and broken Germany that emerged from the First World War, and, along with the earlier Buddenbrooks, earned him a Nobel Prize for literature in 1929. Mann himself considered The Magic Mountain to be his greatest novel, and few in his own day doubted the preeminence of this modernist classic; however, many have argued that the age of literary modernism has passed. If this is so, how might we best understand Mann's masterpiece now? Topics covered in this volume, which aims to provide both a survey of and new research into important aspects of the work, include Mann's comic vision, his homosexuality, his fraught attitude toward Jews, the place of his novel in the landscape of postmodern life, the theme of solitude, music in the novel, and technology. Stephen D. Dowden is Professor of German at Brandeis University. Contributors: David Blumberg, Michael Brenner, Stephen Dowden, Edward Engelberg, Ulker Goekberk, Eugene Goodheart, Joseph P. Lawrence, Karla Schultz, Susan Sontag, Kenneth Weisinger. Stephen D. Dowden is Professor of German at Brandeis University.

Goethe in German-Jewish Culture (Hardcover, Revised 2000): Klaus L Berghahn, Jost Hermand Goethe in German-Jewish Culture (Hardcover, Revised 2000)
Klaus L Berghahn, Jost Hermand; Contributions by Barbara Hahn, Brenda Machosky, Christoph Koenig, …
R2,460 Discovery Miles 24 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New essays examining Goethe's relationship to the Jews, and the contribution of Jewish scholars to the fame of the greatest German writer. The success of Daniel Goldhagen's Hitler's Willing Executioners(1997) and the heated debates that followed its publication exposed once again Germany's long tradition of anti-Semitism as a major cause of the Holocaust. Goldhagen, like many before him, drew a direct and irresistible line from Luther's pamphlets against the Jews to Hitler's attempted annihilation of European Jewry. This collection of new essays examines the thesis of a universal anti-Semitism in Germany by focussing on its greatest author, Goethe, and seeing to what extent some scholars are justified in accusing him of anti-Semitism. It places the reception of Goethe's works in a broader historical context: his relationship to Judaism and the Jews; the reception of his works by the Jewish elite in Germany, the reception of the 'Goethe cult' by Jewish scholars; and the Jewish contribution to Goethe scholarship. The last section of the volume treats the Jewish contribution to Goethe's fame and to Goethe philology since the 19th century, and the exodus of many Jewish authors and scholars after 1933, when they took their beloved Goethe into exile. When a few of them returned to Germany after 1945, it was to a country that had lost Goethe's most devoted audience, the German Jews. KLAUS L. BERGHAHN and JOST HERMAND are professors of German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In his sixth-century work commonly known as the De hebdomadibus, Boethius (ca. 480-524) poses the question of how created things or substances can be good just as they are - that is, good just by existing - without being the same as the source of all goodness, God, who is understood to be Goodness Itself. In his commentary written in the thirteenth century, St. Thomas Aquinas sets out to explain the problem Boethius is treating as well as to explicate Boethius's solution. In doing so, however, the Angelic Doctor suggests a more developed analysis of goodness, based on his own metaphysical perspective. Still, his view can be seen to continue the emphasis Boethius himself placed on the notion of creation - bringing into being - as crucial to understanding the issues at hand. The introduction to this translation provides critical historical background, including an account of the influence of Cicero and Augustine, for understanding Boethius's view of being, or esse. Based on historical and textual analysis, the authors reaffirm the ""traditional"" interpretation, which holds that for Boethius esse indicates form rather than a distinct act of being. In articulating the difference between Boethius's and Aquinas's positions on esse and on goodness, and hence the relation of esse and goodness, Schultz and Synan show not only that Aquinas was respectful of Boethius's stance, but that his own position could be seen as a development in harmony with his predecessor's thought. The English translation itself, in facing-page format with the 1992 Leonine critical edition of Aquinas's Latin text, remains faithful to the text and at the same time clear and readable.

This is the autobiography of the author of the series, "The Life and Ramblings of Ron." I thought the future may grab our attention better than the past or present so I published "The Fears and Hope" first; anyway, there is no future without a past or present so I hope this will catch your attention, too. Hopefully, this autobiography will illustrate, "Cheer up, things could be better." This is my life story with some of it's warts, but mostly of God's blessings to me for trying to do the "right thing." I'm a Solomon wanna be, content like Mary to sit at Jesus' feet. I hope that my life journey can be of help to you in your journey. May you find God with you, too, may He shine His face upon you and give you peace. That is the intention behind this autobiography, as well as, all the books in this series. This was originally written to share my life, my faith, and my values with my children. Now, hopefully, a wider audience can benefit from reading my true life story; even from my ramblings, hopefully. The last three books in the series, as mentioned above, are fictional, also intended to pass on the things near and dear to my heart for my Family to remember, adapt, pass on, and celebrate. The following paragraph illustrates the reflective nature of this book. This is just one of the many discoveries that the circumstances of my life have led me too. For a long time I wondered how to implement the phrase, when life gives you lemons make lemonade. I used to kid, "What about limes and grapefruit?" I used to feel guilty that I hadn't made something worthwhile out of the difficulties that came my way. Finally, I realized I should stop beating myself up with these supposed failures on my part. I did make lemonade, so to speak; I learned, I persevered, I hung in there, and I did the best I could by the grace of God to whom be all praise and Glory. Amen. I really think the true events of my life can help others in their journey through difficult times. I found it helpful to me as I wrote it. I must admit, that I may not have learned everything that I should have, but the casual reader may find insights worth discovering. As a non celebrity, I can only hope some one will discover the worth of an average persons insights to living the abundant life. With hope that a wider audience can benefit from this book, I will be glad that my faith, hope, and love can be shared to help renew a world that desperately needs the object of my faith, hope, and love; namely, the Triune God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Knowing that there may be a possibility to help someone, I sincerely pray that this book can lead that person to the One that gives life and sustains it. I of course believe in Jesus as my personal Savior, but I can see how a witness to living a life of faith can transfer to others living by their own faith systems. All of us can and will benefit from living by a generic motto, "Cheer up things could be better." I modify it a little bit because I know God is at work making it better. I have said for years, "There is always hope." Looking back at my life I can see the hand of God in it. I always need to remember that every day; especially, when my life doesn't unfold the way I expect it to. Life is so different for each of us; it can be so unfair. Life is such a precious gift so much more enjoyable in connection with others and the One who gave us that gift. To that end I'm trying to offer a life story as an ambassador for Christ which may connect with your life in such a way that you too can know real joy and the peace that goes beyond all comprehension. My only claim to fame is that I am a forgiven and forgiving sinner who wants to be there for other sinners to share a message of hope that can lift us all up. If that can happen through this book to God be all praise and glory. Amen.

The Search for Quotation - Verbal Parallels in the Prophets (Paperback, NIPPOD): Richard L. Schultz The Search for Quotation - Verbal Parallels in the Prophets (Paperback, NIPPOD)
Richard L. Schultz
R1,570 Discovery Miles 15 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A thorough study of quotation within ancient and modern literatures is the background for this new approach to alleged quotations within the prophetic writings. The common claim that specific verbal parallels result from the conscious repetition of the words of a predecessor is beset by difficulties. After examining quotation in non-prophetic (ancient Near Eastern, early Jewish, Old Testament wisdom and narrative, and modern Western) literatures, Schultz proposes a new model for interpreting verbal parallels that utilizes several criteria for identifying quotation and combines diachronic with synchronic analysis. He then applies this model to five representative verbal parallels involving the book of Isaiah. This book illustrates how an awareness of the versatility of quotation facilitates a more accurate interpretation of verbal parallels, and at the same time calls for greater caution in employing them in support of various theories.>

Equips Christians to defend the doctrine of inerrancy against a culture and academy ever skeptical of the Bible's historical claims.

Is historical accuracy an indispensable part of the Bible's storyline, or is Scripture only concerned with theological truths? As progressive evangelicals threaten to reduce the Bible's jurisdiction by undermining its historical claims, every Christian who cares about the integrity of Scripture must be prepared to answer this question.

Do Historical Matters Matter to Faith? offers a firm defense of Scripture's legitimacy and the theological implications of modern and postmodern approaches that teach otherwise. In this timely and timeless collection of essays, scholars from diverse areas of expertise lend strong arguments in support of the doctrine of inerrancy. Contributors explore how the specific challenges of history, authenticity, and authority are answered in the text of the Old and New Testaments as well as how the Bible is corroborated by philosophy and archaeology.

With contributions from respected scholars--including Allan Millard, Craig Blomberg, Graham Cole, Michael Haykin, Robert Yarbrough, and Darrell Bock--Do Historical Matters Matter to Faith? arms Christians with fresh insight, arguments, and language with which to defend Scripture's historical accuracy against a culture and academy skeptical of those claims.
