Climate Change Education - Reimagining the Future with Alternative Forms of Storytelling (Hardcover): Rebecca L. Young Climate Change Education - Reimagining the Future with Alternative Forms of Storytelling (Hardcover)
Rebecca L. Young; Contributions by Beverly B. Bachelder, Robert S. Bachelder, Karen Ball, Mary-Alice Corliss, …
R2,324 Discovery Miles 23 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Climate Change Education: Reimagining the Future with Alternative Forms of Storytelling offers innovative approaches to teaching about climate change through storytelling forms that appeal to today's students-climate fiction and protest poetry, horror and documentary films, video games and social media. The stories are used as exemplars, from exploring space debris to urban design planning to fast fashion and provide entry points for investigating particular aspects of climate science, including the local and global impacts of a warming planet. Each chapter provides analysis and strategies for fostering climate (and space) literacy through knowledge, empathy, and agency. The contributors encourage educators to answer students' calls for comprehensive K-12 climate education by aligning pedagogy with real-world challenges to prepare students who understand the myriad injustices of the climate crisis and feel empowered to confront them. Contributors from around the world share their own stories and urge educators to join the growing, hopeful movement for action, classroom by classroom.

Unchecked Power? - How Recent Constitutional Reforms are Threatening UK Democracy: Alison L. Young Unchecked Power? - How Recent Constitutional Reforms are Threatening UK Democracy
Alison L. Young
R467 Discovery Miles 4 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is the government really acting for the people? Or does this rhetoric simply justify an executive power-grab? For some, Boris Johnson’s premiership epitomised how far the UK’s democracy has been captured by populism and the Prime Minister seemed more concerned about fulfilling the wishes of the British people than with following the rules or listening to Parliament. Events like ‘Partygate’ grabbed the headlines. Criticisms of Boris Johnson’s actions eventually led to his resignation and replacement as leader of his party and Prime Minister. Some feel that this shows that the UK’s constitution is healthy, with checks and balances in place to prevent any possible abuse of power. While these events attracted much media attention, other constitutional changes have been taking place with little public awareness. These have strengthened governmental powers and weakened political and legal checks over governmental actions. Deliberation is being replaced by rhetoric and principles of good government no longer seem to restrain the actions of those in power. Alison Young provides the first consolidated account of these changes, arguing that the UK is currently on a constitutional cliff-edge which endangers democracy and good constitutional government. She argues that more is needed to shore up the UK’s post-Brexit constitution to prevent it collapsing into a system of unchecked power.

Dictionary of Polling - The Language of Contemporary Opinion Research (Hardcover, New): Michael L. Young Dictionary of Polling - The Language of Contemporary Opinion Research (Hardcover, New)
Michael L. Young
R2,138 Discovery Miles 21 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Michael L. Young's dictionary defines the most important terms in contemporary public opinion research. About 400 words mark out the field, words needed if one wants to understand the language of polling and to claim literacy in the field. This reference is designed for professionals working in the survey research field, for pollsters and those who produce polls, and for students and scholars concerned with public opinion. Journalists, political professionals, elected officials, and federal, state, and local officials will also find this guide to practice and usage in the field extremely valuable.

A general introduction assesses the key literature dealing with polling, and a longer bibliography appears in the back of the book. The key terms are arranged alphabetically and a general index enables readers to trace subjects, themes, and ideas discussed under the various entries.

ADHD Grown Up - A Guide to Adolescent and Adult ADHD (Hardcover): Joel L Young ADHD Grown Up - A Guide to Adolescent and Adult ADHD (Hardcover)
Joel L Young
R1,193 R1,043 Discovery Miles 10 430 Save R150 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Yet despite this awareness, many clinicians as well as the general public continue to under-appreciate the significance of ADHD as it manifests itself in adults. What happens to all these ADHD kids when they grow up? ADHD isn t like a cold or the flu it doesn t just go away all of the time. As a child grows and matures, it is possible that the symptoms lessen, and in some cases adults are able to overcome the disorder, but it doesn t usually just vanish on its own. At least 40-70% of those diagnosed with this disorder as kids will have it persist when they are adults; however, mental health professionals often overlook ADHD symptoms and continue calling their adult patients who suffer from it anxious or depressed, or diagnose them with a personality disorder. Family members may also consider adults with procrastination issues, inattentiveness, and distractibility lazy or malingering, when in fact they are suffering from ADHD. Here Joel Young MD, who has been treating and researching ADHD for more than15 years, takes a comprehensive look at ADHD in adults. As an accurate diagnosis is essential to a patient s successful treatment, the book begins by detailing how clinicians can provide the most accurate ADHD diagnosis. Once established, the basic diagnostic process begins. This includes obtaining a careful medical history to rule out medical problems that may mimic the symptoms of ADHD, taking a psychiatric history and carefully considering any family or genetic history of medical and psychiatric problems. Some helpful tools used to evaluate quickly and comprehensively distressed patients are presented. Comorbidities are extremely common among patients with ADHD. Emphasis in the book is placed on the most common ADHD comorbidities, including mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorders, eating disorders and learning disabilities. The book also details the different types of ADHD that clinicians may encounter: ADHD (predominately hyperactive/impulsive subtype) is manifested in people who are hyperactive, and experience serious problems at work and at home. They are fidgety and impatient and may be the most commonly diagnosed adults. ADHD (predominately-inattentive subtype) manifests itself in patients who are typically, but not exclusively, female. As children, these women were inattentive and distractible, underperforming but not demonstrating overt behaviors typical of their hyperactive brethren. Their conditions may be complicated by factors like anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Even as adults, most clinicians overlook their symptoms. Other chapters focus on diagnostic and treatment issues in specific populations: adolescents and common adolescent mindsets; women with ADHD; substance abuse; psychotherapy and coaching as treatments and medications. The medications chapter will review the use of antidepressant and mood stabilizing medications taken in concert with stimulants or non-stimulants, and other medication combinations need for conditions comorbid with ADHD. Finally, the author concludes by presenting findings that self-referred patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome have high rates of ADHD. Young proposes that extreme distractibility may intensify the patient s pain perception. Overall this book provides clinicians and family members with a concise yet comprehensive overview of the many issues associated with ADHD throughout adolescence and adulthood."

The Chorleywood Bread Process (Hardcover): Stanley P Cauvain, L.S. Young The Chorleywood Bread Process (Hardcover)
Stanley P Cauvain, L.S. Young
R3,682 Discovery Miles 36 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The introduction of the Chorleywood Bread Process was a watershed in baking. It sparked changes in improver and ingredient technology, process and equipment design which have had a profound impact on baking processes and the structure of the industry. Written by two of the world s leading experts on the process, this important book explains its underlying principles and ways of maximising its potential in producing a wide range of baked products.
After a brief review of the basic principles of bread making, the book outlines the development and fundamental characteristics of the Chorleywood Bread Process. The following group of chapters review the key steps in the process, beginning with ingredient quality and quantities. Other chapters consider dough mixing and processing. Building on this foundation, the authors then review common quality defects and how they can be prevented or resolved. The book then considers how knowledge-based software systems can help to manage the process. The concluding chapters review the range of bakery products that can be produced using the process, how it can best be applied in different kinds of bakery and likely future developments.
The Chorleywood Bread Process is a standard work for all bakers around the world wishing to maximise the potential of the process, and for scientists, technologists and students wanting a better understanding of the process and its place in commercial bread making.

Middle Class Culture in the Nineteenth Century - America, Australia and Britain (Hardcover): L. Young Middle Class Culture in the Nineteenth Century - America, Australia and Britain (Hardcover)
L. Young
R1,545 Discovery Miles 15 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on expressive and material culture, Linda Young shows that money was not enough to make the genteel middle class. It required exquisite self-control and the right cultural capital to perform ritual etiquette and present oneself confidently, yet modestly. She argues that genteel culture was not merely derivative, but a re-working of aristocratic standards in the context of the middle class necessity to work. Visible throughout the English-speaking world in the 1780s-1830s and onward, genteel culture reveals continuities often obscured by studies based entirely on national frameworks.

Understanding and Treating Chronic Fatigue - A Practical Guide for Patients, Families, and Practitioners (Hardcover): Joel L... Understanding and Treating Chronic Fatigue - A Practical Guide for Patients, Families, and Practitioners (Hardcover)
Joel L Young
R1,425 Discovery Miles 14 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Some doctors still think Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a "fake" diagnosis. In this book, Joel Young, MD, presents the research, experience, and treatments that prove otherwise. Millions of Americans experience chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a continuous exhaustion and a feeling comparable to that of having just run a marathon when all they have done is a daily living task, such as taking a shower or getting dressed. Doctors don't have tests for CFS, and some think it's a faux or psychological disorder. Joel Young, MD, in this heavily researched book, explains why it is a true physical illness and how it may be treated. He details how he successfully treats the symptoms, which can include severe fatigue, "brain fog," chronic pain, and sleep problems. Unlike doctors who recommend exercise, supplements, or opioid medications, Young integrates such options as long-acting stimulants, meditation, and dietary changes to reduce fatigue, as well as non-opioid drugs, medical marijuana, and self-help options including yoga for the associated chronic pain. Features new and emerging research Cautions against quack treatments and so-called "quick fixes" Includes an appendix listing commonly asked questions with short answers Includes a glossary of terms

Turpin and Tomkins' British Government and the Constitution - Text and Materials (Paperback, 8th Revised edition): Alison... Turpin and Tomkins' British Government and the Constitution - Text and Materials (Paperback, 8th Revised edition)
Alison L. Young
R1,633 Discovery Miles 16 330 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

A lot has happened to the UK Constitution in the last seven years. We've witnessed the UK's exit from the EU, further devolution to Scotland and Wales, a number of prominent cases by the Supreme Court, two early parliamentary general elections, major governmental defeats and two Prime Ministerial resignations. Alison Young has built on the text of Colin Turpin and Adam Tomkins' earlier edition, keeping their unique historical and contextual approach, whilst bringing the material up to date with more contemporary examples, including references to Brexit, the recent prorogation and Brexit case law, and the Covid-19 pandemic. The book continues to include substantial extracts from parliamentary and other political sources as well as from legislation and case law. It also provides a full yet accessible account of the British constitution at the culmination of a series of dramatic events, on the threshold of possible further constitutional reform.

Agent Orange - The Failure of Science, Policy and Common Sense (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Alvin L. Young Agent Orange - The Failure of Science, Policy and Common Sense (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Alvin L. Young
R3,809 Discovery Miles 38 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book tells the story of Agent Orange, its usage and the policies that surround it. Agent Orange contains a contaminant known as TCDD. It was the most widely used defoliant from 1965 - 1970 and became one of three major tactical herbicides used in Vietnam. More than 45 major health studies were conducted with Vietnam veterans from the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Korea seeking a relationship between veterans' health and TCDD. Allegations of birth defects in the families of Vietnam veterans and the Vietnamese represented a case study in propaganda and deliberate misinformation by the government of Vietnam. The Policies of the US Government implemented by Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) identified 17 recognized associated presumptive diseases that failed the tests of "cause and effect" and common sense. This book tells the story of Agent Orange, its usage, the health studies and those policies from a diverse range of perspectives, delving into science, statistics, history, policy and ethics. It is of interest to scholars engaged in history, political and social philosophy and ethics.

Automation: The Future of Weed Control in Cropping Systems (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Stephen L Young, Francis J. Pierce Automation: The Future of Weed Control in Cropping Systems (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Stephen L Young, Francis J. Pierce
R4,471 Discovery Miles 44 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technology is rapidly advancing in all areas of society, including agriculture. In both conventional and organic systems, there is a need to apply technology beyond our current approach to improve the efficiency and economics of management. Weeds, in particular, have been part of cropping systems for centuries often being ranked as the number one production cost. Now, public demand for a sustainably grown product has created economic incentives for producers to improve their practices, yet the development of advanced weed control tools beyond biotech has lagged behind. An opportunity has been created for engineers and weed scientists to pool their knowledge and work together to 'fill the gap' in managing weeds in crops. Never before has there been such pressure to produce more with less in order to sustain our economies and environments. This book is the first to provide a radically new approach to weed management that could change cropping systems both now and in the future.

Lycopene and Tomatoes in Human Nutrition and Health (Paperback): A. Venketeshwer Rao, Gwen L. Young, Leticia G. Rao Lycopene and Tomatoes in Human Nutrition and Health (Paperback)
A. Venketeshwer Rao, Gwen L. Young, Leticia G. Rao
R1,438 Discovery Miles 14 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Lycopene is a potent antioxidant carotenoid found in fruits and vegetables; particularly high amounts exist in red tomatoes. It is not an essential nutrient for humans, but can be a potential therapeutic agent for preventing several human diseases. Since the publication of the previous book on lycopene, extensive advances have been made with respect to the role of lycopene and tomatoes in human health. Whereas the initial focus of research was on cancer, Lycopene and Tomatoes in Human Nutrition and Health represents the next major step in documenting advances in understanding the chemistry, bioavailability, metabolism; mechanisms of action of lycopene; and its role in preventing human diseases other than cancer as discussed in the various chapters of the book. The book includes chapters that discuss genetic polymorphisms; and lycopene's relationship to cardiovascular diseases, cardiometabolic diseases, bone health, and other health disorders including male infertility, skin diseases, respiratory disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. The book includes information addressing regulatory aspects of natural health products and, in particular lycopene, presenting industrial insights. The contents of the book are selected carefully to provide the readers with the most current information available on lycopene and tomato bioactives.

Confronting Climate Crises through Education - Reading Our Way Forward (Paperback): Rebecca L. Young Confronting Climate Crises through Education - Reading Our Way Forward (Paperback)
Rebecca L. Young; Foreword by John Adams; Afterword by David W. Orr
R1,052 Discovery Miles 10 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Confronting Climate Crises through Education: Reading Our Way Forward envisions the responsibility of public education to engage a citizenry more prepared to address the challenges of a changing world. Young advocates a paradigm shift that positions ecopedagogy as the central organizing principle of curriculum and assessment design. Each chapter outlines ways literature can serve as a cultural lens for examining the complex patterns of contexts behind our most pressing climate concerns, including potential solutions these patterns may illuminate. A focus on fiction and non-fiction exemplars that can provide such a lens illustrates practical steps educators can take to develop instruction around the immediately relevant environmental crises we are experiencing and to inspire more ecologically conscious, globally-minded problem-solvers prepared to confront them.

Strategic Marketing for Libraries - A Handbook (Hardcover): Elizabeth J. Wood, Victoria L. Young Strategic Marketing for Libraries - A Handbook (Hardcover)
Elizabeth J. Wood, Victoria L. Young
R2,404 Discovery Miles 24 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Strategic Marketing for LibrarieS" is a straightforward discussion of the full range of marketing concepts and tools applied to various types of libraries including public, special, and academic. Wood does an excellent job of explaining complicated marketing concepts and providing real-life examples. "RQ"

This handbook on planning and marketing is recommended as a guide for library managers in academic, public, and special libraries, large or small, who are groping for effective methods of outreach to their constituencies. There are not many volumes which address these aspects of management so thoroughly or so lucidly. "Special LibrarieS"

It is the authors' contention that, although librarians understand the need to market their institutions, they have not as yet focused on how to do so in a deliberate and structured fashion. The text provides means for the strategic planning of information marketing, and it incorporates cogent suggestions for defining missions, setting goals, and devising growth strategies and methodologies for evaluation. Wood and Young urge that the profession examine the challenges of automation in libraries in concert with current marketing strategies, thus assuring long-term viability and patron support. "Booklist"

This unique guide goes beyond mere endorsement of publicity and selling techniques to offer a thoughtful, practical, in-depth discussion of how marketing principles fit into library operations and planning. General marketing principles are explained and interpreted for practitioners in the library and information science fields. Applications of marketing principles appropriate for academic, public, and special libraries are described in detail. In addition, the book examines the interrelationships among the key steps of strategic planning, emphasizing the relationship of continuous, formal planning to implementation of marketing concepts. Numerous graphs and tables provide readily accessible information.

Something Complete and Great - The Centennial Study of My Antonia (Hardcover): Holly Blackford Something Complete and Great - The Centennial Study of My Antonia (Hardcover)
Holly Blackford; Contributions by Janis P Stout, Caterina Bernardini, Melissa J. Homestead, Diane Prenatt, …
R2,607 Discovery Miles 26 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume situates My Antonia as a novel that stands the test of time by including in its pages an extraordinarily wide range of historical, cultural, literary, psychological, thematic, perceptual, and stylistic issues. The volume provides an analysis and assessment of complexities in the novel as well as its reception and legacy. The essays as a whole situate the novel at the cusp of the modern period, marking in myriad ways the novel's transitional role between nineteenth and twentieth-century literature and culture. The first section "Translation" features writers that reflect on Cather's curious devaluation of My Antonia's reception over time; translation issues in Germany, Italty, France, and Russia; and linguistic issues in the novel's vision of Antonia's acculturation. The second section "Tradition" defines Cather's relationship to modernism and regionalism through her career shifts and changes to the Introduction as well as her narrative technique in marginalizing violence and darkness to the edges of Jim's consicousness. The third section "Transgender" analyzes Cather's relationship to Hamlin Garland's Life on the Prairie, J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan and the Neverland, and the work of Truman Capote, especially his gay protagoanist Joel Knox in Other Voices, Other Rooms. The fourth section "Transhuman" deploys work on hysteria to situate Cather's vision of genderless desire and ecocritical lenses to understand Jim and nature. Finally the last section "Transition" discusses Lena Lingard's presence as a New Woman and gift economies in the novel that underscore the community's uneasy transition to twentieth-century capitalism. Gathered in the volume are an international group of scholars who demonstrate the novel's centrality to women's studies, American studies, queer studies, childhood studies, psychoanalysis, ecology, translation and reception, Marxism, narratology, and intertextuality.

The UK Constitution after Miller - Brexit and Beyond (Hardcover): Mark Elliott, Jack Williams, Alison L. Young The UK Constitution after Miller - Brexit and Beyond (Hardcover)
Mark Elliott, Jack Williams, Alison L. Young
R3,303 Discovery Miles 33 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The judgment of the UK Supreme Court in R (Miller) v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union is of fundamental legal, constitutional and political significance. The Supreme Court's judgment discussed the relative powers of Parliament and the Government, the relationship between Westminster and the devolved legislatures, and the extent to which the UK's membership of the EU had changed the UK constitution, both prior to and even after departure. It also provided further evidence of the emerging role of the UK's Supreme Court as a constitutional court, despite the lack of a codified constitution in the UK. This edited collection critically evaluates the decision in Miller, providing a detailed analysis of the reasoning in the judgment and its longer-term consequences for the UK constitution through the period of Brexit and beyond. The case is used as a lens through which to evaluate the modern UK constitution and its potential future evolution. Whatever form Brexit may eventually take, the impact that EU membership and the triggering of Brexit has already had on the UK's constitutional settlement is profound. The book will be of great value to anyone interested in the effect of the Miller case and Brexit on the UK's constitution.

Parliamentary Sovereignty and the Human Rights Act (Hardcover, Uk Ed.): Alison L. Young Parliamentary Sovereignty and the Human Rights Act (Hardcover, Uk Ed.)
Alison L. Young
R3,017 Discovery Miles 30 170 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Human Rights Act 1998 is criticised for providing a weak protection of human rights. The principle of parliamentary legislative supremacy prevents entrenchment, meaning that courts cannot overturn legislation passed after the Act that contradicts Convention rights. This book investigates this assumption, arguing that the principle of parliamentary legislative supremacy is sufficiently flexible to enable a stronger protection of human rights, which can replicate the effect of entrenchment. Nevertheless, it is argued that the current protection should not be strengthened. If correctly interpreted, the Human Rights Act can facilitate democratic dialogue that enables courts to perform their proper correcting function to protect rights from abuse, whilst enabling the legislature to authoritatively determine contestable issues surrounding the extent to which human rights should be protected alongside other rights, interests and goals of a particular society. This understanding of the Human Rights Act also provides a different justification for the preservation of Dicey's conception of parliamentary sovereignty in the UK Constitution.

Time Series Analysis and Adjustment - Measuring, Modelling and Forecasting for Business and Economics (Hardcover, New Ed): Haim... Time Series Analysis and Adjustment - Measuring, Modelling and Forecasting for Business and Economics (Hardcover, New Ed)
Haim Y. Bleikh, Warren L. Young
R4,360 Discovery Miles 43 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Time Series Analysis and Adjustment the authors explain how the last four decades have brought dramatic changes in the way researchers analyze economic and financial data on behalf of economic and financial institutions and provide statistics to whomsoever requires them. Such analysis has long involved what is known as econometrics, but time series analysis is a different approach driven more by data than economic theory and focused on modelling. An understanding of time series and the application and understanding of related time series adjustment procedures is essential in areas such as risk management, business cycle analysis, and forecasting. Dealing with economic data involves grappling with things like varying numbers of working and trading days in different months and movable national holidays. Special attention has to be given to such things. However, the main problem in time series analysis is randomness. In real-life, data patterns are usually unclear, and the challenge is to uncover hidden patterns in the data and then to generate accurate forecasts. The case studies in this book demonstrate that time series adjustment methods can be efficaciously applied and utilized, for both analysis and forecasting, but they must be used in the context of reasoned statistical and economic judgment. The authors believe this is the first published study to really deal with this issue of context.
