Exploring some of the ways in which repair practices and
perceptions of brokenness vary culturally, Repair, Brokenness,
Breakthrough argues that repair is both a process and also a
consequence which is sought out-an attempt to extend the life of
things as well as an answer to failures, gaps, wrongdoings, and
leftovers. This volume develops an open-ended combination of
empirical and theoretical questions including: What does it mean to
claim that something is broken? At what point is something broken
repairable? What are the social relationships that take place
around repair? And how much tolerance for failure do our societies
have?
Second Edition of the Bestseller! "It Could Happen to Anyone, Second Edition, opens a fresh window of understanding into the tragedy of domestic assault. It is a hands-on book that will be indispensable to practitioners and victims alike. LaViolette and Barnett have distilled their years of experience and understanding into a very readable and compelling book." -Paul Mones, Attorney and Author of When a Child Kills "This is the book for anyone looking for the best source of current information about the issues related to domestic violence that have emerged since the problem became visible to the public 20 years ago. The authors provide a thorough analysis of the complex factors that make it difficult for women to extricate themselves from violent relationships. Excellent insights and valuable tools assist women to understand their experiences and to take action for their safety. This book is a user-friendly resource for anyone professionally or personally concerned about domestic violence." -Barrie Levy, LCSW, UCLA Faculty Member, Psychotherapist and author of Dating Violence and In Love and in Danger Totally revised and rewritten, the second edition of the widely read and highly praised bestseller It Could Happen to Anyone offers all readers a unique amalgamation of the practical clinical experience of Alyce LaViolette and the extensive research efforts of Ola Barnett on battered women and their batterers. This second edition includes a wealth of new material and case examples, and retained sections have been carefully rewritten to reflect contemporary thinking. It continues to provide understanding and empathy regarding this complex issue and presents an integrated learning theory explanation of the conditioning that culminates in wife abuse, in the resulting state of the victim, and in the decision to stay with an abuser. This extensively revised and expanded new edition, like the widely acclaimed original book, is a must read for anyone working in or training to work in the field of domestic violence.
The first English-language social science book to comprehensively
explore hitchhiking in the contemporary era in the West, this
volume covers a lot of ground-it goes to and fro, in an echo of the
modus operandi of most hitchhiking journeys. As scarification,
piercings, and tattoos move from the counter-culture to popular
culture, hitchhiking has remained an activity apart. Yet, with the
assistance of virtual platforms and through its ever-growing
memorialisation in literature and the arts, hitchhiking persists
into the 21st century, despite the many social anxieties
surrounding it. The themes addressed here thus include: adventure;
gender; fear and trust; freedom and existential travel; road and
transport infrastructures; communities of protest and resistance;
civic surveillance and risk ecologies.

In recent years, there has been an increased engagement throughout
the social sciences with the study of extreme places and practices.
Dangerous games and adventure tours have shifted from being
marginal, exotic or mad to being more than merely acceptable. They
are now exemplary, mainstream even: there are a variety of new
types, increasing numbers of people are doing them and they are
being appropriated and have infiltrated more and more contexts.
This book argues that hazardous sports and adventure tourism have
become rather paradoxical. As a set of activities where players and
holidaymakers are closer to death or danger than they would
otherwise be, they are the complete opposite of normal games or
vacations. Adventure sports and tours reverse the general
definition of a holiday as being an escape from the seriousness of
everyday life, as in most cases, they are innately serious,
requiring as they do 'life or death' decision-making. Beginning
with the rise in colonial explorations and moving on to consider
the Dangerous Sports Club of Oxford, this book examines the
increasing phenomena of adventure sports such as bungy jumping,
cliff jumping or 'tomb-stoning', surfing and parkour within a
framework of positive risk. It explores how certain assumptions
about knowledge, agency, the body and nature are beginning to
coalesce around newly developing spheres of social relations.
Additionally, extreme games have become activities that are germane
to the dawning of green social thought and so the book also
addresses issues that deal with the intimate connections that exist
between pleasure and the moral responsibility towards the
environment.

The widely read and highly praised bestseller It Could Happen to
Anyone offers a unique amalgamation of the practical clinical
experience of Alyce LaViolette and the extensive research of Ola
Barnett on battered women and their batterers. Fully updated and
revised, this Third Edition includes a wealth of new material and
case examples, while retained sections have been carefully
rewritten to reflect contemporary thinking. This important text
continues to provide understanding and empathy regarding the plight
of battered women as they attempt to find safety. The integration
of current knowledge with learning theory explains how any woman's
previous life experiences along with the effects of battering might
influence her to stay with her abuser. The book's content also
explains how some social institutions, such as the criminal justice
system, cannot be counted upon to protect her, thus making it
dangerous for her to leave or stay. In extreme cases, she may even
be killed. From a more optimistic viewpoint, the book describes
many innovations geared to assist battered women through shelters,
transitional housing, and temporary income support. This
extensively revised and expanded new edition is a must read for
anyone working in or training to work in a helping role for issues
in domestic violence.

The Swahili World presents the fascinating story of a major world
civilization, exploring the archaeology, history, linguistics, and
anthropology of the Indian Ocean coast of Africa. It covers a
1,500-year sweep of history, from the first settlement of the coast
to the complex urban tradition found there today. Swahili towns
contain monumental palaces, tombs, and mosques, set among more
humble houses; they were home to fishers, farmers, traders, and
specialists of many kinds. The towns have been Muslim since perhaps
the eighth century CE, participating in international networks
connecting people around the Indian Ocean rim and beyond.
Successive colonial regimes have helped shape modern Swahili
society, which has incorporated such influences into the region's
long-standing cosmopolitan tradition. This is the first volume to
explore the Swahili in chronological perspective. Each chapter
offers a unique wealth of detail on an aspect of the region's past,
written by the leading scholars on the subject. The result is a
book that allows both specialist and non-specialist readers to
explore the diversity of the Swahili tradition, how Swahili society
has changed over time, as well as how our understandings of the
region have shifted since Swahili studies first began. Scholars of
the African continent will find the most nuanced and detailed
consideration of Swahili culture, language and history ever
produced. For readers unfamiliar with the region or the people
involved, the chapters here provide an ideal introduction to a new
and wonderful geography, at the interface of Africa and the Indian
Ocean world, and among a people whose culture remains one of
Africa's most distinctive achievements.
