This eminently readable book explores the symbolic and
psychological aspects of numbers. The author shows that numbers are
far more than the symbols we use for counting, for they are founded
on a deep psychic structure that underlies many of our thoughts and
behaviors. Numbers also give shape and meaning to our socially
constructed world. Enigma reads like a mystery novel as it traces
the first appearance of numbers in Paleolithic times through
Eastern and European countries and Meso-America. And while the
author does consider the mathematical properties of numbers, the
book is aimed at the intelligent layperson with an interest in the
more esoteric and psychological aspects of mathematical ideas. It
will also have a strong appeal to those interested in popular
science and in Jungian ideas. Each of the numbers, from zero to
ten, is given its own chapter and there are also chapters on number
symbolism in the Kabbalah, divination, music, religion, and
mythology.
According to several recent polls, more than 80 percent of
Americans believe in life after death. Of those, many adhere to
their beliefs because of religious faith. Beyond religion, though,
there is increasing scientific examination of life after death
hypotheses. Both religious and secular believers are more
frequently using empirical research to answer the key questions of
how consciousness may transcend corporeal life and death. These
essays from leading survival theoreticians scientifically assay the
issues and evidence. Interdisciplinary in nature, it covers diverse
topics including the origins of life after death hypotheses;
theoretical, methodological and empirical approaches to afterlife
research; hallucination experiences; evidence for consciousness
survival; birthmarks and previous-life memories; suicide; and
spirit participation. Concluding chapters discuss the future of
afterlife research and offer a new interpretation of consciousness
survival.
By now, parapsychology should have become an accepted scientific
field of research. However, there is great resistance to
parapsychological research despite the strength of evidence in
favor of conducting it. This collection of essays focuses on the
future of the psychical research field. One essay speculates about
the kind of future where psychic phenomena are studied in every
university. Another identifies 10 areas of potential difficulty
facing parapsychology. Other essays indicate areas where
conclusions may need re-examination and refinement and presents
possibilities for innovative approaches to future study. Some of
the areas of study covered include altered states of consciousness,
ESP, Meta-Analysis, the theory of psychopraxia, and sociological
and phenomenological issues.
