1893. This volume is a part of the course of home reading entitled
the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. The aim of this
little book is to give general readers some idea of the subject and
spirit of European Continental literature in the later and
culminating period of the Middle Ages, the 11th, 12th and 13th
centuries. It contains chapters relative to French, Spanish,
Scandinavian, German and Italian literature. No English is included
because medieval English literature is easily accessible and
because during that time the best medieval literature was
developed, England was comparatively unproductive.
