From Adam Smith and the Industrial Revolution to Wall Street and
multinational corporations, capitalism has long been one of the
world's leading economic systems. This work traces the evolution of
capitalism from its roots in medieval Europe's rigid economy,
through the laissez-faire abuses of the 19th century, to its
contemporary form as shaped by competition with socialism.
This book traces the evolution of the highly integrated global
financial system from 1750 to the present. It examines the
corporate form of business organization in the eighteenth century
that saw an explosion of growth in the nineteenth, which
facilitated the international movement of capital. The author also
deals with the parallel growth of financial markets and explains
how the need to finance public debts paved the way for stock
markets as well as outlining the role of private merchant bankers,
who originated as international bankers with family-run offices
across Europe. He charts the development of banks into public
corporations and follows the evolution of modern paper money,
explaining the emergence of institutions such as the International
Monetary Fund and the World Bank. While tracing the development of
foreign-exchange markets and the history of trading blocs, the book
also examines how economic powers such as Britain and France used
access to capital to wield power in less-developed parts of the
world. Finally, an history of financial crises is presented,
revealing how economic shocks reverberate from one country to
another today through the global financial network.
Motivated by the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, champion swimmer Lee
Stump Kelley is hell bent on becoming a Marine. His all consuming
goal: To kill as many of the hated enemy as possible. Waylaid by a
silver tongued Navy recruiter, he becomes a frogman instead.
Lee and his team of frogmen are the first to hit the beach all
over the Pacific, blowing up obstructions on a string of tropical
islands. At Tacloban he receives a rude awakening. War may seem
glorious and patriotic when sitting back home on your comfortable
living room couch, but up close and personal it s blood and dying.
And when he loses his two best friends in gruesome encounters, his
whole belief system is challenged.
Shaken to his very core and wanting to end it all, Lee has to
suck it up and move on to Okinawa with what s left of his frogman
team. There he becomes entangled in the Navy s costliest operation
of the entire war. Barely surviving a fleet decimating typhoon, he
is burned during the most frenzied kamikaze attack Japan ever
musters.
Shell-shocked and swaddled in gauze, Lee is sent to Guam to
recuperate and prepare for the invasion of mainland Japan, a
landing everyone has been dreading for months. When an admiral and
his staff asks for his opinion on the impending operation, even
though he s only a second class petty officer who has never seen a
three-star before, Stump doesn t pull any punches. After taking a
deep breath, he tells it like it is.
Frankly, Admiral Can we really allow the Japs to take a million
of us with them? Cause that s how many American lives it will cost
us to march into Tokyo. And I know damn well, one of those lives is
gonna be mine. "

Patrick Goodman is the captain of the Pioneer Gymnastics team and
the best gymnast that Pioneer has ever produced; however, it will
take much more from the Kennedy High senior if he is going to get
his Pioneer team to Coach Jim Lowery's goal of becoming National
Team Champions. Although his team has experience, it will require a
leap of faith from Patrick and his teammates to raise their
gymnastics to the next level in his final season as a Pioneer.
Chris McClure doesn't quite fit the Pioneer mold. Since moving
to Knoxville from California, he has found a difficult time fitting
in with his new teammates. However, Chris has what every gymnast
wants; talent, courage, and a knack for living on the edge. But,
Chris also has a dark secret, one that could jeopardize the success
of the Pioneers.
Within the walls of Pioneer Gymnastics, seven young men shed
blood, sweat, and tears, to follow their coach and their dreams as
they risk their necks on a daily basis in an attempt to become the
first gymnastics team from Tennessee to be crowned national
champions. Although there are many roadblocks in their way, their
greatest obstacles lie within themselves.
