How do trees help reduce violence? What do roads have to do with
chronic disease? Prevention Diaries examines the unexpected yet
empirically predictable relationships that shape our health,
providing the keys to realizing vitality and health across our
society. With passion, wisdom, and humor, internationally
recognized prevention expert Larry Cohen draws on his three decades
of experience to make a case for building health into the everyday
fabric of our lives-from health care to workplaces, urban planning
to agriculture. Prevention Diaries envisions an alternate model of
American health care, one less predicated on treating sickness and
more focused on preventing it. Doing so requires a shift in how our
society perceives and approaches health - first recognizing our
overreliance on individual solutions, then building an environment
conducive to preventing problems before they occur. Through
first-person vignettes and scientific data, Cohen shows that
prevention is the cure what ails us. By creating greater
opportunities for health and safety - things like safe access to
parks and healthful housing - the US sets a foundation for a
healthier country. Prevention Diaries makes it clear that as the US
works to ensure everyone can access medical services, we also must
make health, not just health care, the ultimate goal.
To bid or not to bid - the perennial dilemma in competitive
auctions. The easy answer to the question lies in the correct use
of the Law of Total Tricks. The LAW has been part of bridge
literature since the 1950s, but it was in this book that Larry
Cohen brought it to the attention of the majority of bridge
players. Still the most lucid explanation of the LAW ever
published, this is a book that every bridge player needs to own, to
read, to re-read, and to study in order to improve his results.
Fun. Adventure. Treehouses. Getting dirty. Because farts are funny,
crashing things into each other is good and girls are gross. This
book is all about boys being boys, and it comes with a triple dog
dare: read it out loud, with lots of voices and noises. Warning:
may cause parent teacher conferences and/or late bed times.
Larry Cohen is one of the most successful American bridge players of the last 20 years. In My Favorite 52, Cohen presents a collection of his favorite personal bridge moments, using an intimate 'over-the-shoulder' presentation, taking the reader through more than 60 deals (no, not just 52!). Each deal is important to him in some way, or technically interesting, or just plain fun.
The book's interactive style allows the reader to follow bidding and play, and even to make their own decisions at key points. Read this book for fun, or study it in depth and learn from it - whichever you choose to do, you will find it hard to put down.
This book puts the reader at the table in the world's most
prestigious Invitational Pairs tournament, held annually in The
Hague. Larry Cohen is regularly invited to these events, and the
book is based on his popular articles that have appeared in 'Bridge
Today' magazine. The author presents real-life hands from several
of the Hague tournaments as bidding problems that the reader can
try with their own favourite partner. Then they can read Cohen's
insightful analysis of how each pair of hands should be bid, and
compare their results with those of the world-class experts who
actually played them. Includes an optional tearout section at the
end of the book for easy bidding practice.
Following the LAW, the sequel to To Bid or Not to Bid, was
published in 1994, and took the basic concepts explained in the
first book to a higher level of sophistication, while giving many
practical examples from expert play of how to use the Law of Total
Tricks correctly. Both books are must-reads for every improving
bridge player.
