Hippie hair. Shiny head." --Wally Lamb "Bipolar, no two ways about it." --Jason Owen "So would you believe me anyway?" --James Frey "Can't look at heart donor's picture." --Tonia Hall "Healed with steel, then got real." --Dr. Mehmet Oz "I still practice my Oscar speech." --Jennifer Labbienti "I've done it all except hear." --Marlee Matlin
Written by an algebraic topologist motivated by his own desire to learn, this well-written book represents the compilation of the most essential and interesting results and methods in the theory of polynomial invariants of finite groups. From the table of contents: - Invariants and Relative Invariants - Finite Generation of Invariants - Construction of Invariants - Poincare Series - Dimension Theoretic Properties of Rings of Invariants - Homological Properties of Invariants - Groups Generated by Reflections - Modular Invariants - Polynomial Tensor Exterior Algebras - Invariant Theory and Algebraic Topology - The Steenrod Algebra and Modular Invariant Theory
Deceptively simple and surprisingly addictive, Not Quite What I Was Planning is a thousand glimpses of humanity--six words at a time. One Life. Six Words. What's Yours? When Hemingway famously wrote, "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn," he proved that an entire story can be told using a half dozen words. When the online storytelling magazine SMITH asked readers to submit six-word memoirs, they proved a whole, real life can be told this way too. The results are fascinating, hilarious, shocking, and moving. From small sagas of bittersweet romance ("Found true love, married someone else") to proud achievements and stinging regrets ("After Harvard, had baby with crackhead"), these terse true tales relate the diversity of human experience in tasty bite-sized pieces. From authors Jonathan Lethem and Richard Ford to comedians Stephen Colbert and Amy Sedaris, to ordinary folks around the world, everyone has a six-word story to tell.
Written by an algebraic topologist motivated by his own desire to learn, this book represents the compilation of results in the theory of polynomial invariants of finite groups. As well as covering invariant theory, the book also introduces some of the basic concepts behind ideal theory and homological algebra in a liberating context, and discusses the mutual impact of invariant theory and algebraic topology. Along the way, the author also examines such topics as the Hilbert-Noether finiteness theorems, methods for constructing invariants, the Poincare series, localization and use of gradings, and the Hilbert Syzygy theorem. Larry Smith includes numerous examples and illustrates the theorems by applying them to concrete cases.
This book provides the first academically rigorous description and critical analysis of the Higher Education system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and of the vision, strategies and policy imperatives for the future development of Saudi universities. The government of Saudi Arabia has recognized in both policy and practice the necessity of developing its university system to world-class standard. Significantly increasing access and participation in Higher Education across a range of traditional and non-traditional disciplines is directly relevant to the future social and economic growth of the country. This book addresses the way in which Saudi Arabia is moving to develop a quality university system that balances the need for students to gain the knowledge, skills and 'ways of doing' necessary to operate effectively on the world stage while simultaneously maintaining and demonstrating the fundamental values of the Islamic religion and culture. The book provides a description and critical analysis of the key components of the Saudi Higher Education system, and of system-level responses to the challenges and opportunities facing Saudi universities. It is written by a team of Saudi academics and authors of international standing from non-Saudi universities so as to provide both internal and external perspectives on all issues and to place information and ideas in the context of the international Higher Education scene.

This popular and successful text was originally written for a one-semester course in linear algebra at the sophomore undergraduate level. Consequently, the book deals almost exclusively with real finite dimensional vector spaces, but in a setting and formulation that permits easy generalisation to abstract vector spaces. A wide selection of examples of vector spaces and linear transformation is presented to serve as a testing ground for the theory. In the second edition, a new chapter on Jordan normal form was added which reappears here in expanded form as the second goal of this new edition, after the principal axis theorem. To achieve these goals in one semester it is necessary to follow a straight path, but this is compensated by a wide selection of examples and exercises. In addition, the author includes an introduction to invariant theory to show that linear algebra alone is incapable of solving these canonical forms problems. A compact, but mathematically clean introduction to linear algebra with particular emphasis on topics in abstract algebra, the theory of differential equations, and group representation theory.
In the second edition of this popular and successful text the number of exercises has been drastically increased (to a minimum of 25 per chapter); also a new chapter on the Jordan normal form has been added. These changes do not affect the character of the book as a compact but mathematically clean introduction to linear algebra with particular emphasis on topics that are used in the theory of differential equations.
This popular and successful text was originally written for a one-semester course in linear algebra at the sophomore undergraduate level. Students at this level generally have had little contact with complex numbers or abstract mathematics, so the book deals almost exclusively with real finite dimensional vector spaces, but in a setting and formulation that permits easy generalization to abstract vector spaces. The goal of the first two editions was the principal axis theorem for real symmetric linear transformation. The principal axis theorem becomes the first of two goals for this new edition, which follows a straight path to its solution. A wide selection of examples of vector spaces and linear transformation is presented to serve as a testing ground for the theory. In the second edition, a new chapter on Jordan normal form was added which reappears here in expanded form as the second goal of this new edition, along with applications to differential systems. To achieve the principal axis theorem in one semester a straight path to these two goals is followed. As compensation, there is a wide selection of examples and exercises. In addition, the author includes an introduction to invariant theory to show students that linear algebra alone is not capable of solving these canonical forms problems. The book continues to offer a compact, but mathematically clean introduction to linear algebra with particular emphasis on topics that are used in abstract algebra, the theory of differential equations, and group representation theory.
What is stopping you from having a great career? The answer, quite probably, is you. After all, it is so easy to settle for the dull but safe, or to allow yourself to become trapped in a career you dislike, or to persuade yourself that the job you really want is out of your reach. Building on his hugely popular TEDx talk, 'Why You Will Fail to Have a Great Career', he shows why people so often get stuck on the wrong path. He then takes you step by step from that initial point when you are considering your options to the moment when you pitch for that perfect job - showing you exactly what decisions you need to make, and when. Whether you are starting out, looking to move up, or hoping to change direction altogether, this book will guide you towards a happier, more fulfilled career - now.
