Developmental Science and the Holistic Approach (Paperback): Lars R. Bergman, Robert B. Cairns, Lars-Goran Nilsson, Lars Nystedt Developmental Science and the Holistic Approach (Paperback)
Lars R. Bergman, Robert B. Cairns, Lars-Goran Nilsson, Lars Nystedt
R1,430 Discovery Miles 14 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is the outcome of a symposium where leading researchers, mainly in developmental psychology, came together to discuss the implications of the emerging developmental science and the holistic approach. In doing this, the authors wanted to honor a distinguished colleague, David Magnusson, and his career-long contributions to this field. The purpose of the book is to discuss the profound implications for developmental science of the holistic paradigm, especially with regard to the individual development within psychology. Against the background of their own empirical, theoretical, or methodological research, the authors have tried to identify what is needed for the developmental theory and methods within this paradigm and discuss possibilities and limitations in relation to conventional approaches.

Lars-Goran Nilsson
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1979, this book contains papers presented at a conference held in 1977 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the University of Uppsala. Beyond the commemoration, the main reason for this conference was to get students of memory together to discuss and evaluate the memory research that had already been carried out, was presently underway and to speculate about the type of research in this area that would be carried out in the future. The contributors were specifically asked to concentrate on overall theoretical and metatheoretical questions at the cost of empirical problems. With chapters from many of the leading experts in the field this is an opportunity to enjoy some of their early insights.

Memory and Society - Psychological Perspectives (Hardcover): Lars-Goran Nilsson, Nobuo Ohta Memory and Society - Psychological Perspectives (Hardcover)
Lars-Goran Nilsson, Nobuo Ohta
R2,948 Discovery Miles 29 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Memory and Society" explores the social factors which influence human memory and our conceptualization of memory. It examines the relationships between memory, society and culture and considers the relevance of theories of memory to real world issues.
The opening section deals with the topic of autobiographical memory. It looks at the role of the self; how the self is shaped by society but also how it is the self which encodes and constructs memories. The Reconstructive nature of episodic memory is considered and how the present acts as the basis for remembering the past, with the remembereras beliefs, desires and interpretations playing a central role.
The middle section looks at the influence of the social environment on learning. It debates the relevance of the application of basic principles gained in laboratory settings to learning and memory in social settings. These principles are used to throw light on topics such as e-learning, eyewitness testimonies and optimal treatment and thinking. Moreover, these real world scenarios are themselves used to throw light on basic principles and how they can be improved.
The final section looks at the social consequences and costs of memory deficits, covering normal aging and pathological changes in old age, memory deficits related to dyslexia, working memory problems in everyday cognition, problems in executive functions in chronic alcoholics, and Korsakoff amnesics. It also examines methods of rehabilitation for everyday life.
Incorporating contributions from leading international authorities in memory research, as well as new data and ideas for the direction of future research, this book will be invaluable to psychologistsworking in the fields of memory and society.
