John Westlake (1828 1913) was a distinguished English jurist,
specialising in international law. After his death, all of his
papers on international law, with the exception of book reviews,
were collected and edited by German lawyer Lassa Oppenheim into
this volume, which was first published in 1914. The topics covered
include the ancient precedents for international law, the rule of
war, and territorial sovereignty, 'especially with relation to
uncivilized regions'. This book will be of value to anyone with an
interest in the history of international law."
