This story began a hundred years ago when a child became the
inspiration for his famous father, A. A. Milne, who created one of
the best known children's characters in recent history. His parents
wanted a girl and to begin with treated him as one. They were
initially quite distant from him and his upbringing was left to a
loyal and loving nanny. Unfortunately, this left Christopher Robin
Milne terminally shy and lacking in self-confidence. Unable to
escape from the shadow of his fictional self, he became an object
of continued interest from a non-understanding public. His
salvation started with being sent away to Stowe School, going to
Cambridge and joining the Army in the Second World War as a sapper.
After an unhappy and directionless time immediately post-war in
London, he eventually married and, very successfully, ran a
bookshop in the South West for twenty-one years. His life was
dominated by a love of the countryside, learned at his parents'
country home, Cotchford Farm in Hartfield, East Sussex, and much
later in Devon. How he turned his life round, against the odds, is
the subject of this biography.

William Young was the son of gentleman farmer Henry Young who owned
Cotchford Farm in the mid-nineteenth century. At the age of just
twenty-three William left the farm for what we might now term a
'gap year' working in Canada. This book, based on his own diary
from 1854/5, tells the fascinating story of his journey via
Liverpool and onwards on a three-masted schooner to New York,
Buffalo and eventually Lake Erie. The voyage had its own perils, a
long way from transatlantic travel today. Unbeknown to our diarist,
the ship he travelled on was part of a criminal enterprise and
eventually suffered both mutiny and wreck. In the mill towns on
Lake Erie Young proves an indispensable worker both on crops and
stonework. Just as he is about to return to England he is beset
with difficulties..... His is a young, clear voice on life a
hundred and sixty years ago.
The Spanish Civil War was one of the pivotal events of the 1930's,
the moment when fascism and socialism came into open conflict.
First published in 1939, The Spanish Tragedy recounts the
experiences of Jef Last. Activist, poet and novelist, Last might
have been the archetypal Republican volunteer but his experience
left him even more disenchanted than most. Critical of Soviet
Communism, a court martial loyal to Moscow tried to sentence him to
death and he was forced to flee to Scandinavia.
* Quickly brings practising managers up to speed, providing clear
models and practical steps to follow. * Contains interviews with
key business leaders and practitioners and behind the scenes case
studies. * The first edition was Bronze winner of the AXIOM
Business Book Award in the category of Philanthropy, Non-Profit,
Sustainability.

This practical and positive guide shows how good, effective
reflection can help people to stay on track, as well as understand
what is working well and what might be improved – essential
skills for leaders at all levels of practice from newly qualified
staff to senior managers. Supporting readers to link theory and
action with reflection, the authors illustrate how practitioners
can exercise their own kinds of leadership to strengthen, improve
and thrive. Taking a realistic and achievable view of leadership,
the book: reviews the different leadership approaches and styles
that help to inform us about what makes a good leader; explores the
role of emotional intelligence, appreciative intelligence and
narrative intelligence in leadership, especially in complex,
challenging and continually changing healthcare settings; and uses
case studies and practice examples to ensure the book is relevant,
current and helpful. Reflective leadership is fundamental to
providing safe, effective healthcare to all patients, as well as
enhancing resilience for individuals, teams and organisations. This
guide is an essential read for healthcare students and
practitioners, no matter at what stage or level they are at as a
leader.
There has been a profound shift in the direction of archaeological activity in the last fifteen years, a change reflected in this volume. While excavation remains a professional priority, the interpretation of archaeological evidence is now attracting increasing critical study. In part this is stemmed from the public demand for explanation of archaeological evidence, which moves beyond the more restricted academic debate among archaeologists. But it also follows from a desire among archaeologists to come to terms with their own subjective approaches to the material they study, and a recognition of how past researchers have also imposed their own value systems on the evidence which they presented. This volume provides a forum for debate between varied approaches to the past from leading archaeologists in Europe, North America, Asia and Australasia. It addresses the philosophical issues involved in interpretation, and the origins of meaning in the evolution and emergence of 'mind' in early hominids. It covers the ways in which material culture is understood and presented in museums, and how the nature of history is itself in flux.
This book applies strategic culture concepts to violent non-state
actors (VNSAs) in a comparative analysis. In recent years, Al-Qaida
in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has become notorious for kidnapping
Western hostages in north-western Africa and for its role in the
short-lived Islamist takeover of Mali. The group, formerly known as
the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, rebranded itself as an
Al-Qaida franchise in 2007, leading to speculation of a change from
its Algeria-centric agenda to an anti-Western one. This study
compares and contrasts the ideas and behaviour of these two groups,
using a strategic-cultural approach, and finds that, despite some
commonalities, AQIM has a distinct strategic culture from Al-Qaida
central, thereby debunking the notion of Al-Qaida as a monolithic
movement. This is the first comparative analysis of violent
non-state actors to employ a strategic-cultural approach and the
first such study on AQIM. While strategic culture has traditionally
been applied to states, this work adds to the emerging literature
applying such approaches to non-state armed groups, and employs a
novel conception of strategic culture consisting of narratives and
practices. This book will be of much interest to students of
strategic culture, political violence, Middle Eastern politics and
Security Studies in general.
You have probably heard of postnatal depression, but did you know
that most cases of postnatal depression actually began in
pregnancy? And that most people who have antenatal depression have
had depression in the past? And did you know that postnatal
depression is not caused by women's hormones gone awry; men are
suffering postnatal and perinatal depression in larger and larger
numbers too? This is why "postnatal depression" has now been
renamed "perinatal depression"('peri' means around, as in the word
"perimeter"). Why is the seemingly joyful event of new parenthood
causing so much suffering? Depression seems to be related to the
stresses that a modern couple undertake when they have a baby. The
lack of support, lack of celebration, overload of expectations,
overwhelming responsibility, isolation, judgment, blaming by the
media, tiredness, mixed messages, confusion, high expectations and
lack of tender loving care serve to eventually break parents and
their relationships. And when we break parents, we break a baby.
Babies are our future, and if we break a baby, in the long run, we
break society. Postnatal depression takes a high toll on society.
Dealing effectively with perinatal depression is about valuing
love, connection, calm and stillness, over and above productivity,
achievement and acquisition.

The landscape of contemporary research is characterized by growing
interdisciplinarity, and disciplinary boundaries are blurring
faster than ever. Yet while interdisciplinary methods, and
methodological innovation in general, are often presented as the
‘holy grail’ of research, there are few examples or discussions
of their development and ‘behaviour’ in the field. This
Routledge Handbook of Interdisciplinary Research presents a bold
intervention by showcasing a diversity of stimulating approaches.
Over 50 experienced researchers illustrate the challenges, but also
the rewards of doing and representing interdisciplinary research
through their own methodological developments. Featured projects
cover a variety of scales and topics, from small art-science
collaborations to the ‘big data’ of mass observations. Each
section is dedicated to an aspect of data handling, from
collection, classification, validation to communication to research
audiences. Most importantly, Interdisciplinary Methods presents a
distinctive approach through its focus on knowledge as process,
defamiliarising and reworking familiar practices such as
experimenting, archiving, observing, prototyping or translating.
Originally published in 1986, this book draws upon a range of
authors to reflect wide interest in systematising traditional
medicine, and to include material on significant instances of
regulation or organisation. It was the first book to study the
efforts of traditional healers and their newly formed professional
associations and as such constitutes a pioneering collection of
sources. Because of the changing position of traditional medicine
it may well also be a unique record: before long what is described
here will largely have disappeared.

In September 1939, housewife and mother Nella Last began a diary
whose entries, in their regularity, length and quality, have
created a record of the Second World War which is powerful,
fascinating and unique. When war broke out, Nella's younger son
joined the army while the rest of the family tried to adapt to
civilian life. Writing each day for the "Mass Observation" project,
Nella, a middle-aged housewife from the bombed town of Barrow,
shows what people really felt during this time. This was the period
in which she turned 50, saw her children leave home, and reviewed
her life and her marriage - which she eventually compares to
slavery. Her growing confidence as a result of her war work makes
this a moving (though often comic) testimony, which, covering sex,
death and fear of invasion, provides a new, unglamorised, female
perspective on the war years.'Next to being a mother, I'd have
loved to write books.' Oct 8, 1939
There has been a profound shift in the direction of archaeological
activity in the last 15 years. While excavation remains a
professional priority, the interpretation of archaeological
evidence is now attracting increasing critical study. In part, this
stems from the public demand for explanation of archaeological
evidence, which moves beyond the more restricted academic debate
among archaeologists. But it also follows from a desire among
archaeologists to come to terms with their own subjective
approaches to the material they study, and a recognition of how
past researchers have also imposed their own value systems on the
evidence which they presented. This volume provides a forum for
debate between varied approaches to the past. The authors, drawn
from Europe, North America, Aisa and Australasia, represent many
different strands of archaeology. It addresses the philosophical
issues involved in interpretation, and the origins of meaning in
the evolution and emergence of "mind" in early hominids. It covers
the ways in which material culture is understood, and presented in
museums, and how the nature of history is itself in flux.
Much archaeological work is concerned with identifying gaps in our
knowledge and developing strategies for addressing them; we perhaps
spend less time thinking about how research should proceed when we
already know, relatively speaking, quite a lot. ÂThe programme of
dating causewayed enclosures in southern Britain that was published
in 2011 as Gathering Time (Oxbow Books) gave us a new, more precise
chronology for many individual sites as well as for enclosures as a
whole, and as a consequence a far better sense of their
significance and place in the story of the British Early Neolithic.
Arguably, causewayed enclosures are now the best understood type of
Neolithic monument. Yet work continues, and in the last few years
new discoveries have been made, older excavations published and
further work undertaken on well-known sites. Viewing this research
within the new framework for these monuments allows us to assess
where our understanding of enclosures has got to and where the
focus of future research should lie. This volume originates from a
Neolithic Studies Group meeting held in November 2019, which aimed
firstly to showcase and explore the wide range of current work on
causewayed enclosures and related sites, and secondly to assess
what we still want to know about these sites in light of the
monumental achievement of Gathering Time. ÂThe papers collected
here comprise reports on recent development-led fieldwork, academic
research and community projects, and the volume concludes with a
reflection by the authors of Gathering Time.
