scope is inclusive of work across the theoretical, archival,

cultures, capaciously defined. Essays in this volume engage with
widely varied themes: law and literature; manuscript production,
patronage, and aesthetics; real and imagined geographies; gender
and its connections to narrative theory and to psychoanalysis.
Investigations range from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries,
from England to the eastern Mediterranean. New arguments are put
forward about the dating, context, and occasion of Geoffrey
Chaucer's Boece, while the narrative dynamics of Chaucer's
"Franklin's Tale" and "Tale of Melibee" are examined from new
perspectives. The topography of the Holy Lands appears both as a
set of emotional sites, depicted in the Prick of Conscience in its
account of the end of the world, and as co-ordinates in the
cultural imaginary of medieval the wine-trade. Grendel's mother
emerges as the invisible and unavowable centre of male heroic
culture in Beowulf, and the fourteenth-century St Erkenwald is
brought into contact with the community-building project of the
medieval death investigation. Finally, the late medieval Speculum
Christiani is revealed to be a work with deep aesthetic investments
when read through the framework of how its medieval scribes
encountered and shaped that work.

Considerations of writing about war, in war, because of war, and
against war, in a wide range of texts from the middle ages onwards.
War was the first subject of literature; at times, war has been its
only subject. In this volume, the contributors reflect on the
uneasy yet symbiotic relations of war and writing, from medieval to
modern literature. War writing emerges in multiple forms,
celebratory and critical, awed and disgusted; the rhetoric of
inexpressibility fights its own battle with the urgent necessity of
representation, record and recognition. This is shown to be true
even to the present day: whether mimetic or metaphorical,
literature that concerns itself overtly or covertly with the real
pressures of war continues to speak to issues of pressing
significance, and to provide some clues to the intricateentwinement
of war with contemporary life. Particular topics addressed include

A pioneering approach to contemporary historical writing on the
First Crusade, looking at the texts as cultural artefacts rather
than simply for the evidence they contain. The First Crusade
(1095-1101) was the stimulus for a substantial boom in Western
historical writing in the first decades of the twelfth century,
beginning with the so-called "eyewitness" accounts of the crusade
and extending to numerous second-hand treatments in prose and
verse. From the time when many of these accounts were first
assembled in printed form by Jacques Bongars in the early
seventeenth century, and even more so since their collective
appearance in the great nineteenth-century compendium of crusade
texts, the Recueil des historiens des croisades, narrative
histories have come to be regarded as the single most important
resource for the academic study of the early crusade movement. But
our understanding of these texts is still far from satisfactory.
This ground-breaking volume draws together the work of an
international team of scholars. It tackles the disjuncture between
the study of the crusades and the study of medieval
history-writing, setting the agenda for future research into
historical narratives about or inspired by crusading. The basic
premise that informs all the papers is that narrative accounts of
crusades and analogous texts should not be primarily understood as
repositories of data that contribute to a reconstruction of events,
but as cultural artefacts that can be interrogated from a wide
range of theoretical, methodological and thematic perspectives.

The cataclysmic conquests of the eleventh century are here set
together for the first time. Eleventh-century England suffered two
devastating conquests, each bringing the rule of a foreign king and
the imposition of a new regime. Yet only the second event, the
Norman Conquest of 1066, has been credited with the impact and
influence of a permanent transformation. Half a century earlier,
the Danish conquest of 1016 had nonetheless marked the painful
culmination of decades of raiding and invasion - and more
importantly, of centuries of England's conflict and cooperation
with the Scandinavian world - and the Normans themselves were a
part of that world. Without 1016, the conquest of 1066 could never
have happened as it did: and yet disciplinary fragmentation in the
study of eleventh-century England has ensured that a gulf separates
the conquests in modern scholarship. The essays in this volume
offer multidisciplinary perspectives on a century of conquest: in
politics, law, governance, and religion; in art, literature,
economics, and culture; and in the lives and experiences of peoples
in a changing, febrile, and hybrid society. Crucially, it moves

Essential for all students of medieval literature, Early Fiction in
England includes extracts by Geoffrey of Monmouth, Wace, Marie de
France, Chaucer and many others, in new translations and with
illuminating introductions. Before the twelfth century, fiction had
completely disappeared in Europe. In this important and provocative
book, Laura Ashe shows how English writers brought it back,
composing new tales about King Arthur, his knights and other heroes
and heroines in Latin, French and English. Why did fiction
disappear, and why did it come to life again to establish itself
the dominant form of literature ever since? And what do we even
mean by the term 'fiction'? Gathering extracts from the most
important texts of the period by Wace, Marie de France, Chaucer and
others, this volume offers an absorbing and surprising introduction
to the earliest fiction in England. The anthology includes a
general introduction by Laura Ashe, introductions to each extract,
explanatory notes and other useful editorial materials. All French
and Latin texts have been newly translated, while Middle English
texts include helpful glosses. Laura Ashe is a University Lecturer
in English and Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford. Her first book
Fiction and History in England, 1066-1200 (Cambridge University
Press, 2007) has been followed by numerous articles and edited
collections; she is now writing the new Oxford English Literary
History vol. 1: 1000-1350 (Oxford University Press).

explosion in the writing of Latin and vernacular history in
England, while the creation of the romance genre reinvented the
fictional narrative. Where critics have seen these developments as
part of a cross-Channel phenomenon, Laura Ashe argues that a
genuinely distinctive character can be found in the writings of
England during the period. Drawing on a wide range of historical,
legal and cultural contexts, she discusses how writers addressed
the Conquest and rebuilt their sense of identity as a new, united
'English' people, with their own national literature and culture,
in a manner which was to influence all subsequent medieval English
literature. This study opens up new ways of reading post-Conquest
texts in relation to developments in political and legal history,
and in terms of their place in the English Middle Ages as a whole.
