This book examines the many ethical issues that are encountered in
the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). It supports
pediatricians, nurses, residents, and other providers in their
daily management of critically ill children with the dilemmas that
arise. It begins by examining the evolution of pediatric critical
care, and who is now impacted by this advancing medical technology.
Subsequent chapters explore specific ethical concerns and
controversies that are commonly encountered. These topics include
how to conduct end-of-life discussions with families facing a
myriad of challenging choices. It goes on to explore the concept of
futility, and what that does and does not mean in the pediatric ICU
setting. Controversial subjects such as children as organ donors,
particularly using donation after cardiac death, in addition to
issues surrounding the declaration of brain death are covered.
Additional chapters address resource allocation, and also analyze
the use of long-term technology in chronically critically ill
children. Chapters include case examples with guidance on how to
work through similar difficulties and decision-making. While this
book is specifically targeted for care providers at the ICU
bedside, it is also of benefit to medical students, students in
bioethics, practicing ethical consultants and families who are
dealing with critically ill children.

For courses in Forensic Accounting An inside view into the practice
of forensic accounting As a result of increased litigation and
regulatory enforcement, the demand for forensic accountants has
never been higher. This area of specialty is considered the top
niche market in the accounting profession. The new Forensic
Accounting is the first text of its kind to provide a comprehensive
view of what forensic accountants actually do and how they do it.
With experience as both practitioners and educators, authors Robert
Rufus, Laura Miller, and William Hahn offer a unique perspective
that bridges the gap between theory and practice. They present
concepts in the context of a scientific approach, emphasizing
critical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving-skills that are
useful in a wide variety of academic and professional environments.
And because its content is consistent with the AICPA curriculum for
the Certified in Financial Forensics (CFF) credential, this text
gives your students a head start on the path toward career

case studies and sample documents give students a glimpse into the
actual practice of forensic accounting. * Highlight the importance
of a scientific approach: The authors explain the benefits of
utilizing a scientific approach and provide opportunities for
students to practice its application. * Foster thorough
understanding via learning aids: Various tools, throughout the text
and at the end of each chapter, support students as they learn and
review.
THE MAGICIAN'S BOOKis the story of one reader's long, tumultuous
relationship with C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia." As a
child, Laura Miller read and re-read "The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe" and its sequels countless times, and wanted nothing more
that to find her own way to Narnia. In her skeptical teens, a
casual reference to the Chronicles's Christian themes left her
feeling betrayed and alienated from the stories she had come to
know and trust. Years later, convinced that "the first book we fall
in love with shapes us every bit as much as the first person we
fall in love with," Miller returns to Lewis's classic fantasies to
see what mysteries Narnia still holds for adult eyes--and is
captured in an entirely new way.
In her search to uncover the source of these small books'
mysterious power, Miller looks to their creator, Clive Staples
Lewis. What she discovers is not the familiar, idealized image of
the author, but a man who stands in stark contrast to his whimsical
creation-scarred by a tragic and troubled childhood, Oxford
educated, a staunch Christian, and a social conservative, armed
with deep prejudices.
THE MAGICIAN'S BOOK is an intellectual adventure story, in which
Miller travels to Lewis's childhood home in Ireland, the possible
inspiration for Narnia's landscape; unfolds his intense friendship
with J.R.R.Tolkien, a bond that led the two of them to create the
greatest myth-worlds of modern times; and explores Lewis's
influence on writers like Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Franzen, and Philip
Pullman. Finally reclaiming Narnia "for the rest of us," Miller
casts the Chronicles as a profoundly literary creation, and the
portal to a life-long adventure in books, art, and the imagination.
Erudite, wide-ranging, and playful, THE MAGICIAN'S BOOK is for all
who live in thrall to the magic of books.

The greatest haunted house story ever written, the inspiration for a 10-part Netflix series directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Hutton
First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.
Offering a concise, entertaining snapshot of Japanese society,
"Manners and Mischief" examines etiquette guides, advice
literature, and other such instruction for behavior from the early
modern period to the present day and discovers how manners do in
fact make the nation. Eleven accessibly written essays consider a
spectrum of cases, from the geisha party to gay bar cool, executive
grooming, and good manners for subway travel. Together, they show
that etiquette is much more than fussy rules for behavior. In fact
the idiom of manners, packaged in conduct literature, reveals much
about gender and class difference, notions of national identity,
the dynamics of subversion and conformity, and more. This richly
detailed work reveals how manners give meaning to everyday life and
extraordinary occasions, and how they can illuminate larger social
and cultural transformations.
