"The Sunset Years" is the story of a group of medical and legal
professionals who gather weekly in a continuing education class to
study the problems that face today's elderly. Using an upbeat,
positive approach to the questions that always pop up when "old
age" is the topic of conversation, the book discusses many issues
on aging, from Alzheimer's disease to elder abuse, and more. The
reader is lifted above the noise to a vantage point where he can
see from wherever he stands in life, the problems associated with
growing old.
This workbook, based on the book BETRAYED, the Aftermath of Child
Abuse, by Laurel Hall, was designed to help students learn and
understand the facts surrounding abuse.
Abused as a child, Emma Johnson spent most of her life trying to
overcome feelings of guilt, shame, and worthlessness, and working
through those damaging emotions with therapy. When the Penn State
scandal broke, she realized just how little the public understood
the pain that abused children endured. Often, the victims of sexual
and physical abuse carry that emotional turmoil with them into
their adult lives. Knowing that something had to be done, Emma made
it her mission to educate others about the tragic consequences of
abuse. Using Emma's own experiences and the stories of seven abused
women, each of whom reveal their pain and their pasts in an effort
to heal, author Laurel Hall aims to break the silence about abuse
and to demonstrate the havoc such violence inflicts on people's
lives. These are their stories.
"One Soul's Journey" is really an addendum to Providence, the story
of Emma who was repeatedly abused sexually as a child beginning at
the age of four and lasting over four years. The overwhelming guilt
and shame she felt, feeling it was all her fault, filled her with
fear that when she died she was going to Hell. Longing for His
forgiveness, she searched for God for years and could not find Him.
There was always a void in her heart. As an adult, Emma attended a
church retreat just for women and there she read a book "God
Calling." She thought if God spoke to these two women, perhaps He
would speak to one lone woman in search of Him. She decided to
follow their path. Alone, in the morning in a quiet space, Emma
said her prayers and waited for God's response, writing it in her
journal. "One Soul's Journey" is an excerpt of the responses she
received along with poetry she wrote during that period.
This book details the recovery process of one woman to survive the
ravages of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. There were six
steps: therapy, surrender, journaling, self-love, forgiveness, and
writing her story. There are thousands of survivors of abuse and it
is hoped that knowing how one woman recovered may help others find
relief from their pain.
At age four, Emma was sexually abused by neighborhood boys-abuse
that continued for four years. With no one to tell, not even her
parents, her life was filled with pain, shame and misery. She
handled her emotional anguish the only way she knew how: by making
plenty of mistakes, giving in to anger, suffering mental illness
and anxiety attacks, and living a life devoid of joy or self-love.
This is her story. A story of survival, and of overcoming
emotional, physical and sexual abuse to find happiness in marriage,
family and God. She hopes her story will help others who have
suffered similar abuse find peace.
