Drama Classics: The World's Great Plays at a Great Little Price A
masterpiece by one of the greatest writers of the Spanish Golden
Age. When the people of the town of Fuente Ovejuna revolt against
their tyrannical overlord and murder him, the authorities attempt
to find out who is responsible, leading to one of the most
memorable acts of resistance in world drama. First published in
Madrid in 1619, Lope de Vega's play Fuente Ovejuna is believed to
have been written between 1612 and 1614. This edition in the Nick
Hern Books Drama Classics series is an English translation by
Laurence Boswell.
A magical re-telling of the story of Beauty and the Beast, with
music by Mick Sands drawn from traditional French folk melodies.
A magical re-telling of the story of Beauty and the Beast, first
performed in this version by the Royal Shakespeare Company. When
Beauty's father hears that his long-lost ship packed with pearls
has landed safely in harbour, he sets out on a long, difficult
journey to claim his fortune and rescue his family from poverty.
But when, stumbling across a magic world belonging to a fearsome
beast, he picks a rose as a present for his favourite daughter, the
family find themselves in a nightmarish predicament from which only
Beauty can rescue them... This timeless tale of the true nature of
beauty and the transformational power of love is brought to
glorious life in Laurence Boswell's thrilling and inventive
adaptation, which draws on the origins of the tale in French
folklore, and is filled with music, dance and song. Laurence
Boswell's much-performed retelling of the classic fairytale was
first performed at the Young Vic, London, in 1996. It was revived,
in this revised version, by the Royal Shakespeare Company in
Stratford-upon-Avon in 2003.
This translation of one of Calderon's greatest plays was premiered
by the RSC. An ageing painter is driven to double vengeance when
his young bride's lover returns from the dead. Cast size: 16
Don Pedro has it all – high position, wealth, a beautiful family
– and enjoys the good life in the heart of the Spanish capital.
But now he faces a challenge that would test the patience of a
saint. It is time to marry off his daughters. It’s bad enough
that his eldest Beatriz is both obsessed by the latest fashions and
talks like a university professor, but his youngest Leonor is
already enjoying illicit midnight trysts with her lover and is in
no mood to accept an arranged marriage. Throw into this explosive
mix the extravagant young man about town, Don Alonso, who thinks
all women, like all plays, are excellent on the first night and
boring on the second, and you have the recipe for an hilarious
comedy that reaches out effortlessly across the centuries.
