This work, which questions the medical model of psychiatry as the basis of psychotherapy, seeks to help professionals return their field to an activity that is more helpful to clients, more professional, more scientific, more moral, and more psychosocial in orientation. The difficulties facing practicing psychotherapists, the causes of the problems, and a framework to guide efforts to deal with these concerns are discussed in hopes that the uneasiness of psychologists about the present direction of the field can be reduced and changed.
This volume offers a psychology of human personality and behavior created as a function of the politics practiced by the social structure in which they are based. The interaction of individuals with authoritarian/totalitarian, democratic/humanistic and anarchistic forms of politics is examined. The focus is on the particular type of politics practiced by psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis, with the conclusion that these enterprises operate more along authoritarian/totalitarian than democratic/humanistic lines. Simon argues that the mental health field, as currently dominated by psychiatric thinking entrenched in the "myths of mental illness," is acting as a social control agency and a force in the development of a totalitarian state. This volume aso offers a view of how psycho"therapy" can be used as a means to fuel democratic states for individuals. Other works that focus on the politics of psychiatric services have also emerged since Thomas Szasz' work, The Myth of Mental Illness, but this is the first to demonstrate the dangers of the psychiatry and therapy industries from this variety of political, religious, and scientific perspectives.
Based on the author's experience, this discussion of psychology as a human science (rather than a natural science) outlines classroom techniques integrating narrative psychology and dynamic interpersonal psychotherapy as a means of teaching and demonstrating the core curriculum. The core theory integrates modern evolutionary psychology, cognitive constructivism--especially as represented by the works of Jean Piaget and Robert Kegan--social constructionism, and socially-oriented interpersonal psychoanalysis. The sections on teaching techniques blend the above into a theory of student-teacher interactions with Lev Vygotsky's theory of education as an interpersonal process. The book is developed in four parts. Part I is a single chapter that discusses the inadequacy of the lecture method to teach courses in psychology; Part II, comprising of three chapters, lays the philosophical foundations of a postmodern view of psychology as a human science concerned with the phenomenological understanding of the development of human conscious experience and the adaptive process. Part III details the processes of cognitive, affective, and phenomenological change as developing individuals adapt to the physical, political, social, and cultural worlds that enfold around them. Part IV critiques traditional forms of education and describes a more individualized and humanized approach to teaching with its reliance on the student's written narratives. The final chapter is comprised entirely of fragments of student narratives that demonstrate the exciting outcomes of teaching human psychology in a humanistic fashion.
