Elite sport can be an unforgiving and harsh environment. This book
explores psychological predictors of wellbeing and performance
excellence in elite level athletes, and presents an innovative
approach for optimizing mental wellbeing and sporting performance.
Jointly developed by performance psychologists, clinical
psychologists and sport scientists the Flexible Mind approach draws
on contemporary psychological theory and research to help athletes
build 'psychological flexibility' - the ability to experience
challenging thoughts and emotions and still be true to one's
values. A range of case studies relating to different sports are
used to demonstrate how three core components - Being Present,
Being Open and Doing What Matters - can improve athletes'
performance and wellbeing. This book will be a game-changing
resource for sports psychologists, mental health practitioners,
coaches and support staff who are committed to helping athletes to
excel and stay well.
Carl Leckey is the youngest of three children. He grew up in
wartime Britain and loved the excitement of having Italian
prisoners of war in the area. His time as a kid was spent
collecting shrapnel and clambering around the shipwrecks on the
shore of the Mersey. One of his favourite places was his
grandfather's allotment where old World War One comrades would meet
in the garden shed to share a drink and a smoke. Carl served on the
Mersey tugs for 15 years with a break for two years' National
Service from the age of 19 to 21. On returning to the tugs he rose
to the rank of Mate, before being made redundant at the age of 30
in 1968 when the company was taken over. He then worked as a
Leading Lock Keeper for British Waterways in Cheshire for 28 years
until ill health brought premature retirement. He was a Union
Steward Convenor, and Worker Representative on the Company Pension
Fund Management Committee. In 1985 he was awarded a Winston
Churchill Travelling Fellowship to study Ports and Harbour Services
on the Mississippi and Yangtze Rivers in the USA and China. In 1995
he was awarded an MBE for services to British Waterways. After
completing a writer's course with the Open College of Art Carl
began writing novels on a variety of subjects publishing in New
Zealand. United Kingdom and United States of America. Until failing
health due mainly to arthritis Carl and his wife Rose travelled the
world extensively visiting friends and family in a number of
countries. Pop up and Go is the second book the author has written
for children. The story was inspired by a news item the author
heard while travelling through the USA. Most of Carl's books are
also available as an E book. See his other books and reviews by

Groups seeking legal equality often take a victory as the end of
the line. Once judgment is granted or a law is passed, coalitions
disband and life goes on in a new state of equality. Policy makers
too may assume that a troublesome file is now closed. This
collection arises from the urgent sense that law reforms driven by
equality call for fresh lines of inquiry. In unintended ways,
reforms may harm their intended beneficiaries. They may also worsen
the disadvantage of other groups. Committed to tackling these
important issues beyond the boundaries that often confine legal
scholarship, this book pursues an interdisciplinary consideration
of efforts to advance equality, as it explores the developments,
challenges, and consequences that arise from law reforms aiming to
deliver equality in the areas of sexuality, kinship, and family
relations. With an international array of contributors, After Legal
Equality: Family, Sex, Kinship will be an invaluable resource for
those with interests in this area.

Queer Theory: Law, Culture, Empire uses queer theory to examine the
complex interactions of law, culture, and empire. Building on
recent work on empire, and taking contextual, socio-legal,
comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches, it studies how
activists and scholars engaged in queer theory projects can
unwittingly advance imperial projects and how queer theory can
itself show imperial ambitions. The authors - from five continents
- delve into examples drawn from Bollywood cinema to California's
2008 marriage referendum. The chapters view a wide range of texts -
from cultural productions to laws and judgments - as regulatory
forces requiring scrutiny from outside Western, heterosexual
privilege. This innovative collection goes beyond earlier queer
legal work, engaging with recent developments, featuring case
studies from India, South Africa, the US, Australasia, Eastern
Europe, and embracing the frames offered by different disciplinary
lenses. Queer Theory: Law, Culture, Empire will be of particular
interest to students and researchers in the fields of socio-legal
studies, comparative law, law and gender/sexuality, and law and
culture.

Introducing computational wave propagation methods developed over
40 years of research, this comprehensive book offers a
computational approach to NDE of isotropic, anisotropic, and
functionally graded materials. It discusses recent methods to
enable enhanced computational efficiency for anisotropic materials.
It offers an overview of the need for and uses of NDE simulation.
The content provides a basic understanding of ultrasonic wave
propagation through continuum mechanics and detailed discussions on
the mathematical techniques of six computational methods to
simulate NDE experiments. In this book, the pros and cons of each
individual method are discussed and guidelines for selecting
specific simulation methods for specific NDE scenarios are offered.
Covers ultrasonic CNDE fundamentals to provide understanding of NDE
simulation methods Offers a catalog of effective CNDE methods to
evaluate and compare Provides exercises on real-life NDE problems
with mathematical steps Discusses CNDE for common material types,
including isotropic, anisotropic, and functionally graded materials
Presents readers with practical knowledge on ultrasonic CNDE
methods This work is an invaluable resource for researchers,
advanced students, and industry professionals across materials,
mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering, and anyone seeking to
enhance their understanding of computational approaches for
advanced material evaluation methods.
Scholars have addressed at length the 'what' of judicial review
under a bill of rights - scrutinizing legislation and striking it
down - but neglected the 'how'. Adopting an internal legal
perspective, Robert Leckey addresses that gap by reporting on the
processes and activities of judges of the highest courts of Canada,
South Africa and the United Kingdom as they apply their relatively
new bills of rights. Rejecting the tendency to view rights
adjudication as novel and unique, he connects it to the tradition
of judging and judicial review in the Commonwealth and identifies
respects in which judges' activities in rights cases genuinely are
novel - and problematic. Highlighting inventiveness in rights
adjudication, including creative remedies and guidance to
legislative drafters, he challenges classifications of review as
strong or weak. Disputing claims that it is modest and dialogic, he
also argues that remedial discretion denies justice to individuals
and undermines constitutional supremacy.
This volume gathers influential and cutting-edge scholarship on the
international and domestic rights attaching to married couples and
other adult relationships. Addressing examples from the European
Court of Human Rights, UK, USA, Canada, Australia and South Africa,
it traces contentious debates about the content of marital rights
and responsibilities and whether law should reach beyond marriage,
and if so how. Twenty-four essays and a substantial introduction
highlight the complexity and contradictions as marital law grapples
with gender equality, the aftermath of recognizing gay and lesbian
rights, abiding economic inequalities, and 'exotic' issues such as
forced marriage and polygamy.
