Showcasing moments of convergence between the German and Japanese
cultures towards common points of interest over the last one
hundred fifty years, the chapters in this book cover such topics as
culture, diplomacy, geography, history, law, literature,
philosophy, politics, and sports. From the creation of two similar
modern nation-states, to the aggressive struggle for national
supremacy and subsequent total defeat in 1945, the necessity of
coping with their earlier militarism and parallel economic miracles
in the postwar era, Germans and Japanese look back on a remarkably
similar past.
I always liked to put my thoughts on paper in rhymes All of the
thoughts I had hidden in the back of my mind I like to write easy
to understand poems with no punctuation If one of my poems helps
someone through a bad situation Or makes someone smile from reading
one of my poems Or helps one person make a good choice because of a
poem I enjoy writing true short story poems of family and friends I
love to write stories that are real life, and also some that I make
up just for fun. I hope that some people will get some fun reading
them and also stop and think about maybe helping someone you know
who may need help.
A grave-marker, located in the cemetery of Franklin Village,
Michigan, serves as the inspiration for TANSY BITTERS, TANSY
SWEET....a novel written by author and longtime resident of
Franklin, David Lee Roberts. The marker reads "Richard Trick,
Company E., 30th Michigan infantry, died October 27, 1865."
Military records research reveals no reference to Mr. Trick being a
member of the 30th Michigan Infantry or of any Civil War unit. This
mystery inspired the author to create a story containing
interesting fictional characters whose lives intertwine with the
lives and wartime events that were a part of the little village
during the 1860s.

This book defends the conjugal view of marriage. Patrick Lee and
Robert P. George argue that marriage is a distinctive type of
community: the union of a man and a woman who have committed to
sharing their lives on every level of their beings (bodily,
emotionally, and spiritually) in the kind of union that would be
fulfilled by conceiving and rearing children together. The
comprehensive nature of this union, and its intrinsic orientation
to procreation as its natural fulfillment, distinguishes marriage
from other types of community and provides the basis for the norms
of marital exclusivity and permanence. Lee and George detail how
the basic moral norms regarding sexual acts follow from the ethical
requirement to respect the good of marriage and explain how the law
should treat marriage, given its conjugal nature, examining both
the same-sex-marriage issue and civil divorce.

This book explores ways in which screen-based storyworlds transfix,
transform, and transport us imaginatively, physically, and
virtually to the places they depict or film. Topics include fantasy
quests in computer games, celebrity walking tours, dark tourism
sites, Hobbiton as theme park, surf movies, and social gangs of
Disneyland. How physical, virtual, and imagined locations create a
sense of place through their immediate experience or visitation is
undergoing a revolution in technology, travel modes, and tourism
behaviour. This edited collection explores the rapidly evolving
field of screen tourism and the affective impact of landscape, with
provocative questions and investigations of social groups, fan
culture, new technology, and the wider changing trends in screen
tourism. We provide critical examples of affective landscapes
across a wide range of mediums (from the big screen to the small
screen) and locations. This book will appeal to students and
scholars in film and tourism, as well as geography, design, media
and communication studies, game studies, and digital humanities.

Engaging Worlds: Core Texts and Cultural Contexts asks what do we
learn of texts, cultures, and the world's dynamics when we read
core texts, widely and deeply, in core-structured programs of the
world's colleges and universities? What books, what arts, what
associations and institutions, what sciences, what religions, what
cultures, what educations, what citizens, what scholars, are we
preparing for the future through an education in core texts that
engages our worlds? The answers offered in these selected
proceedings are drawn from the widest possible spectrum of
institutions and disciplines who, through core programs, offer
horizon-expanding liberal educations.

Profoundly important ethical and political controversies turn on
the question of whether biological life is an essential aspect of a
human person, or only an extrinsic instrument. Lee and George argue
that human beings are physical, animal organisms - albeit
essentially rational and free - and examine the implications of
this understanding of human beings for some of the most
controversial issues in contemporary ethics and politics. The
authors argue that human beings are animal organisms and that their
personal identity across time consists in the persistence of the
animal organisms they are; they also argue that human beings are
essentially rational and free and that there is a radical
difference between human beings and other animals; criticize
hedonism and hedonistic drug-taking; present detailed defenses of
the prolife positions on abortion and euthanasia; and defend the
traditional moral position on marriage and sexual acts.
