This innovative book presents a new framework for researchers in
the field of physical education and youth sport. By examining the
complex interplay between values, voice and ethics within the
research process, it showcases how the CREATE Principles for
Research Design can facilitate meaningful research with/for
children and young people. Adopting a design thinking approach -
and underpinned by principles of youth voice - the book rethinks
educational research with children and young people and offers a
new framework for the field. With contributions from leading
international experts, the book exemplifies how the CREATE
Principles for Research Design can be applied in practice across a
range of diverse populations and contexts through ten in-depth case
studies. Reflecting contemporary issues in the field, such as
gender, race and ethnicity, disability and social disadvantage,
these case studies take the reader through the process of applying
the CREATE principles as a reflective lens through which to
consider research design with/for youth. Designed to support
aspiring and experienced researchers alike, this book equips
readers with valuable ideas and tools to enhance their research
praxis and shape meaningful and relevant research with/for children
and young people.
"The book volume shares six narrative accounts, which offer
glimpses into the teachers' lives, which are composed with
attention to place, temporality, and personal and social
dimensions. By inquiring narratively into the experiences of these
teachers, the book identifies the complex ways in which the
teachers' personal practical knowledge is shaped by their personal
knowledge landscapes as well as professional knowledge landscapes.
Questions are raised about the implications of seeing teacher
attrition as a process rather than singular event, that is, as a
process of coming to tell a story to leave by, for our
understandings of teacher knowledge and identity. As we shift from
seeing "beginning teachers" to seeing "teachers as beginning", that
is, as seeing teachers as people with experiences of personal and
professional becoming, we shift from seeing them as more than
content knowledge and pedagogic skills, but as people in the midst
of living lives. This narrative and more holistic understanding of
teacher knowledge and identity will help preservice teacher
education programs, schools and school districts to better sustain
people as they begin to teach and become teachers"
There is now a widespread expectation that teachers and coaches
should be reflective practitioners, an expectation written into
national standards of education in many countries. This innovative
book introduces the methods by which teachers and coaches can
conduct research into their own professional practice and therefore
become more effective reflective practitioners, improving their
students' learning as a result. As the only book on practitioner
research that focuses specifically on the unique challenges of
working in a physical education or youth sport environment, it uses
real-life case studies and applied practical examples to guide the
reader through the research process step-by-step. Examining the
what, why and how of four key research methods in particular -
action research, narrative enquiry, autoethnography and self-study
- it provides an expert analysis of the strengths and limitations
of each method and demonstrates how conducting reflective research
can produce tangible results in improving both teaching and
learning. This is an invaluable resource for all those interested
in enhancing their professional development as students,
practitioners or researchers of physical education and youth sport.
