Environmental Bioengineering - Volume 11 (Hardcover, Edition.): Lawrence K. Wang, Joo-Hwa Tay, Stephen Tiong-Lee Tay, Yung-Tse... Environmental Bioengineering - Volume 11 (Hardcover, Edition.)
Lawrence K. Wang, Joo-Hwa Tay, Stephen Tiong-Lee Tay, Yung-Tse Hung
R5,762 Discovery Miles 57 620 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

The past 30 years have seen the emergence of a growing desire worldwide that positive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degrading effects of all forms of pollution - air, water, soil, and noise. Since pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste production, the seemingly idealistic demand for "zero discharge" can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been identi ed: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it available? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers formulate answers to the above three questions. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to speci c pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of environmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establishment of a "methodology of pollution control. " However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

The study of noncommutative rings is a major area in modern algebra. The structure theory of noncommutative rings was originally concerned with three parts: The study of semi-simple rings; the study of radical rings; and the construction of rings with given radical and semi-simple factor rings. Recently, this has extended to many new parts: The zero-divisor theory, containing the study of coefficients of zero-dividing polynomials and the study of annihilators over noncommutative rings, that is related to the Koethe's conjecture; the study of nil rings and Jacobson rings; the study of applying ring-theoretic properties to modules; representation theory; the study of relations between algebraic and concepts of other branches (for example, analytic and topological), etc. Thus, noncommutative rings are ubiquitous in mathematics, and occur in numerous sciences. This volume consists of a collection of original articles refereed by world experts that was presented at the Sixth China-Japan-Korea International Conference on Ring Theory. These articles exhibit new ideas, tools and techniques needed for successful research and investigation in noncommutative ring theory, and show the trend of current research. It is a useful resource book for beginners and advanced experts in ring theory.

Biogranulation Technologies for Wastewater Treatment, Volume 6 - Microbial Granules (Hardcover): Joo-Hwa Tay, Stephen Tiong-Lee... Biogranulation Technologies for Wastewater Treatment, Volume 6 - Microbial Granules (Hardcover)

Microbial granules have practical importance in anaerobic and aerobic biological wastewater treatment. Advantages of granules are retention of biomass in reactor, diversity of microorganisms, complex structure, and resistance to unfavorable conditions. Microbial granules can be used to treat municipal and industrial wastewater for removal of organic matter, xenobiotics, nutrients, and heavy metals.
The book covers almost all aspects of formation and use of microbial granules in wastewater treatment. The data on aerobic microbial granulation are related mostly to laboratory systems due to few pilot systems in the world using aerobic microbial granules. However, by the analogy with anaerobic granulation, which is now used worldwide, it is possible to predict wide applications of aerobic granulation. This book will help researchers and engineers develop these new biotechnologies of wastewater treatment based on aerobic granulation.

* Covers all aspects of formation, organization, and use of microbial granules in wastewater treatment
* Integrates engineering, microbiology, and biotechnology of microbial granules
* Comprises of deep fundamental data as well as practical information for applications of microbial granules in wastewater treatment

Flora Unveiled - The Discovery and Denial of Sex in Plants (Hardcover): Lincoln Taiz, Lee Taiz Flora Unveiled - The Discovery and Denial of Sex in Plants (Hardcover)
Lincoln Taiz, Lee Taiz
R2,803 Discovery Miles 28 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sex in animals has been known for at least ten thousand years, and this knowledge was put to good use during animal domestication in the Neolithic period. In stark contrast, sex in plants wasn't discovered until the late 17th century, long after the domestication of crop plants. Even after its discovery, the "sexual theory" continued to be hotly debated and lampooned for another 150 years, pitting the "sexualists" against the "asexualists". Why was the notion of sex in plants so contentious for so long? "Flora Unveiled" is a deep history of perceptions about plant gender and sexuality, beginning in the Ice Age and ending in the middle of the nineteenth century, with the elucidation of the complete plant life cycle. Linc and Lee Taiz show that a gender bias that plants are unisexual and female (a "one-sex model") prevented the discovery of plant sex and delayed its acceptance long after the theory was definitively proven. The book explores the various sources of this gender bias, beginning with women's role as gatherers, crop domesticators, and the first farmers. In the myths and religions of the Bronze and Iron Ages, female deities were strongly identified with flowers, trees, and agricultural abundance, and during Middle Ages and Renaissance, this tradition was assimilated into Christianity in the person of Mary. The one-sex model of plants continued into the Early Modern Period, and experienced a resurgence during the eighteenth century Enlightenment and again in the nineteenth century Romantic movement. Not until Wilhelm Hofmeister demonstrated the universality of sex in the plant kingdom was the controversy over plant sex finally laid to rest. Although "Flora Unveiled" focuses on the discovery of sex in plants, the history serves as a cautionary tale of how strongly and persistently cultural biases can impede the discovery and delay the acceptance of scientific advances.
