In this sequel to 'Escape from the Planet of the Apes' the year is
1991. Caesar (Roddy McDowall), the son of Zira and Cornelius, has
been sheltered for 18 years by circus owner Armando (Ricardo
Montalban). Following a plague which wiped out all cats and dogs,
apes have been adopted as pets by humans, but when Caesar sees them
being treated as slaves, he leads his brother simians in rebellion
against their overlords.
In a life full of momentous episodes, Theodore Roosevelt's
fifteen-month post-presidential odyssey to Africa and Europe has
never been given its due place. In 1909 and 1910, fresh from the
presidency, Rooosvelt embarked on a grand expedition that fulfilled
a long-held dream for the hunter-naturalist. Moving from Egypt to
British East Africa to the Belgian Congo, Roosevelt hunted
elephants and rhinos, parlayed with mercenaries and tribal kings,
and observed the changes wrought by European colonialism. Along
with his big game rifles, Roosevelt also brought his bully pulpit
and accompanying ideals, lecturing diplomats and politicians on
both continents on the exertions required to maintain the burden of
empire.
In this engaging narrative, J. Lee Thompson traces the
exhilarating adventures Roosevelt undertook as well as periods of
doubt and disillusionment. Even as TR realized one dream of nature
on safari, he came to believe another, more vital to his heart and
legacy, was being undermined at home by President William Howard
Taft. Having initially assumed that the new president would
continue his predecessor's cherished conservation policies,
Roosevelt came to realize that Taft, left alone in the political
jungles of Washington, was directly undermining his legacy. This
led to an acrimonious split between the two old friends,
Roosevelt's explosive return to the American political stage, and
ultimately the election of Woodrow Wilson.
A tale of daring adventure, international celebrity, a
friendship lost, and a political legacy transformed, "Theodore
Roosevelt Abroad "is the first full account of a critical episode
in the life of an American icon.
8 States of Catastrophe takes us on a journey through the
Australian continent, exposing snapshots of lives both separate and
delicately connected. Mysterious coincidences and a series of
catastrophes accompany an ex-journalist and his faithful dog as
they twist their way around the continent in this unashamedly
Australian novel. From the political fringes of Canberra to the
northern beaches of New South Wales, and into the outback of
Queensland (where a mysterious oasis exists on the edge of
reality), the story trains an unwavering lens on lives
catastrophically altered. In places as diverse as a West Australian
wheat belt town and suburban St Kilda, our trip guides - MV (a
motorcycle-riding psychic poet) and Rider (his old black Labrador)
- introduce us to an eclectic cast: Daniella of the nine lines;
Ninette, the Keeper of Secrets; Anjellica, a talk-show host lured
back to Melbourne from Chicago, and her charismatic
chairman-of-the-Melbourne-Football-Club boyfriend; and Carmel,
whose childhood was a breeding ground for murderous revenge. Lives
intersect, and loss and love collide in this intricate web of
humanity.
When Alfred Milner was knighted, he took as his motto Communis
Patria, 'patriotism for our common country'. This is the study of
Milner, which takes his politics, or 'constructive' imperialism as
its primary theme. It also discovers a group of young female
supporters of his vision.
This is the first study of Milner to take his politics, or
'constructive' imperialism as its primary theme. His career is
examined, from the genesis of his imperial ideology at Oxford,
through his time as High Commissioner in South Africa during the
Boer War, to his days as Minister of War during the final seven
months of WWI.
This book takes the reader through a full-color look at reenactment
of the German military of WWII. Dedicated reenactors have gone to
amazing lengths to recreate the Wehrmacht in action. Original tanks
and half tracks take to the field once more, alongside uniformed
German soldiers. Everything from tanks to machine guns to can
openers and cooking utensils is put to use to recreate not only
authentic battles but also the more mundane aspects of wartime
life, such as vehicle and weapons maintenance, sleeping, cooking,
and trying to survive. The author has selected photos from WWII
reenactments around the world, where reenectors have spent enormous
amounts of time and money. Panzers thunder through the fields once
more, planes of the Luftwaffe strike from the sky, and the German
fighting men and women once more are thrown into an amazing array
of scenarios.
Foreword by Martin Freeman Whether flying across a screen or
lighting up the stage, Madness' wild, energetic sax player has
always been hard to miss. For Lee 'Kix' Thompson, life is for
having as much fun as possible. Growing Out of It is the tale of
one 'nutty boy' not really growing out of it at all. From getting
up to no good as a teenager to his many musical (mis)adventures in
the 1970s, Lee's memoir of his formative years captures his
enduring love for his north London stomping ground, where he first
met the other members of Madness. This is a story of growing up in
a certain time and place when anything felt possible, even a bunch
of north London lads forming a ska revival band - and becoming one
of Britain's best-loved groups.
