The first major publication dedicated to one of Norway's most
important photographers Working in a signature modulating gray
scale, the late Norwegian photographer Tom Sandberg spent decades
rendering the world according to an exacting vision, training his
eye on the shapes and forms of the everyday-dark abstractions of
asphalt and sea, the hard edges of an automobile, an ominously
curved tunnel, an anonymous figure casting a shadow-to plumb the
nature of photographic seeing. His pictures are subtle yet
transformative, studies of stillness that radiate mystery. A
perfectionist in the darkroom, Sandberg was acutely sensitive to
the rich spectrum of black and white, and his handmade prints, at
times printed on aluminum and canvas, project a powerful physical
presence. Although Sandberg is esteemed in his native Norway and
throughout Scandinavia and Europe, his oeuvre is less known in the
United States and other parts of the world. This monograph,
produced in close collaboration with the Tom Sandberg Foundation in
Oslo, is a long-overdue celebration of this distinguished artist.
Originally published in 1926, this textbook is the second edition
of a 1918 original, and provides a detailed and engaging
introduction on the theory of electricity. 'As in the first edition
the object has been to present a complete account of the purely
theoretical side of the subject in the only form in which it
appears to be satisfactory from the point of view both of
mathematical consistency and of physical completeness'. Notably,
particular attention has been given to the formulation of the
underlying physical principles and to their translation into a
mathematical theory. Tailored to suit the needs of undergraduates
and presenting the facts and examples in an accessible manner, the
book assumes prior knowledge of the subject and the mathematics
necessary for a full understanding. Providing essential knowledge
and skills for those embarking on the study of electricity, this
book will be of value to scholars of physics.
Liven A. Peterson, Jr., was born February 19, 1917, in Virginia,
MN, a mining town on the Mesaba Iron Range in the wild Arrowhead
Country of that state. Little "Pete" took off on his kiddy car to
explore the woods when he was four years old and he has been doing
so ever since. He spent a large part of his spare time hunting,
fishing, and enjoying nature. When he enrolled at the University of
Minnesota in 1936, he selected wildlife biology as his major. After
graduation in 1939 and Army service during WWII, he joined the
River Basin Studies Branch of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
He was stationed at Billings, Montana; Grand Island, Nebraska;
Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Boise, Idaho before retiring in 1972.
He traveled across the Midwest and Northwest doing field work on
many water development projects during his professional career.
These are his collected stories and recollections of 97-years.
