This book provides information relevant for the conservation of
biodiversity and the sound management of the coastal and forest
ecosystems of the Yucatan Peninsula in the face of global change.
Various aspects of the biodiversity of the Yucatan Peninsula are
analyzed in an integrative manner, including phenological,
ecophysiological, ecological and conservation aspects of plants and
animals and their relationships with humans in coastal and forest
ecosystems.

El animal humano es el unico animal responsable de otras especies
debido a la domesticacion a la que los sometio para uso personal.
La tenencia de animales de compania puede conferir beneficios al
propietario. Sin embargo las actitudes irresponsables dan
facilmente lugar a problemas de salud y ambiente. En Mexico desde
1833 se establecieron lugares especificos para la eliminacion y
confinacion de los perros vagabundos. Desde entonces las acciones
que se han venido tomando para la regulacion de la poblacion canina
vista desde una perspectiva que contribuye al deterioro o afeccion
de la salud publica, en Mexico y a nivel mundial son muy similares
y ninguna de estas ha arrojado resultados notables en su
disminucion. La presente investigacion surge a partir de
necesidades sociales y de salud ambiental, proporcionando campos
especificos de trabajo para atenderlas. Se busca analizar las
representacion social sobre los perros que tiene la poblacion de la
cabecera municipal de Tala, Jalisco, a fin de identificar elementos
para proponer y desarrollar programas de prevencion e intervencion
respecto al bienestar de los animales y la sobrepoblacion canina,
que favorezcan la Salud Ambiental."

En este libro se presentan dos diferentes aproximaciones (al nivel
de los ensambles de especies y realizando estudios con una especie
modelo: Canthon cyanellus cyanellus) para evaluar los efectos
relativos que la estructura y composicion de un paisaje de bosque
tropical seco bajo manejo ganadero, tienen sobre los patrones de
diversidad, ocupacion y movilidad de escarabajos del estiercol
(Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) en el sur de Chiapas, Mexico. La
aparicion de nuevas condiciones de habitat, resultantes del manejo
ganadero, aumenta el reemplazo de especies de escarabajos y parece
derivar en una alta diversidad gamma en el paisaje, incrementando
el area de distribucion de especies antes perifericas y permitiendo
la colonizacion de las areas. La conectividad funcional de las
poblaciones de C. c. cyanellus entre los diferentes fragmentos de
bosque tropical seco es facilitada principalmente por los cercos
vivos. El mantenimiento de las practicas tradicionales de manejo y
los niveles de heterogeneidad asociados, benefician la ocupacion y
persistencia de un importante numero de especies y pueden
representar habitats importantes para la recolonizacion de otras."
