Understanding Social Problems, Policies, and Programs offers a
comprehensive analysis of the policies used in the United States to
develop the nation's social welfare programs. In this third
edition, Leon Ginsberg updates social welfare policy through the
1990s. He explains developments that have taken place during the
Clinton administration, in particular the sweeping changes effected
by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation
Act of 1996, and details the major provisions of the new law and
how it differs from laws previously in effect. He deals with the
effect on social welfare of diverse social issues and events
ranging from the trial of O. J. Simpson and the Oklahoma City
bombing to the Contract with America. Ginsberg has also expanded on
the six-component model -- history, social problems, public policy,
description of programs, policy analysis, and policy practice --
that defines social welfare policy and services.
Human Services for Older Adults provides a broad overview of the
conditions and context in which today's older adults live, as well
as practical information on how to work with them given today's
circumstances. Information is provided on the demographic
characteristics of older people in America, discussing social,
economic, and health problems confronting them and the needs of
subgroups among the elderly population such as minority elderly,
rural elderly, and older women. The book also provides information
on various methods of working with older adults, and social
programs available through the government, as well as other sources
for meeting the needs of the elderly. The revised edition of a
popular text, it is geared toward nurses, social workers,
psychologists, gerontologists, counselors, and others who work in
senior adult positions and settings.
In this fourth edition of a social work standard, Leon Ginsberg and
Julie Miller-Cribbs offer an updated version of the text that has
introduced thousands of social work students to the defining
policies and procedures of the profession. Concise yet
comprehensive, the volume surveys the span of social welfare
history, explains the elements of social welfare policy education,
and describes the impact of executive, legislative, and judicial
initiatives on the delivery of social services. With this edition,
the authors cover all the required content areas for the social
welfare policy and service sequence as specified in the Educational
Policy and Accreditation Standards of the Council on Social Work
Education's Commission on Accreditation.
Social Work and Science in the 21st Century enhances the inclusion
of natural science concepts and knowledge into social work
education and practice. The book highlights basic scientific
theories and ideas in a broad array of natural science fields,
including chemistry, physics, astronomy, geometry, numbers, and big
data. A number of chapters focus on how knowledge from the natural
sciences can enhance social work practice in areas as diverse as
medicine, substance abuse, mental health, and intellectual and
developmental disabilities, while other chapters on water, human
geography, climate change, execution and the death penalty, and the
life cycle are designed to highlight the natural science behind
social issues. The information presented in the book is complex
enough to spark the reader's continued interest in knowing more
about the natural sciences, but basic enough to allow readers with
limited understanding of the natural sciences-at both the
bachelor's and master's levels-to feel comfortable exploring its
contents.
