Predicative Possession (Hardcover): Leon Stassen Predicative Possession (Hardcover)
Leon Stassen
R4,984 Discovery Miles 49 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first comprehensive treatment of the strategies employed in the world's languages to express predicative possession, as in "the boy has a bat." It presents the results of the author's fifteen-year research project on the subject. Predicative possession is the source of many grammaticalization paths - as in the English perfect tense formed from to have - and its typology is an important key to understanding the structural variety of the world's languages and how they change. Drawing on data from some 400 languages representing all the world's language families, most of which lack a close equivalent to the verb to have, Professor Stassen aims (a) to establish a typology of four basic types of predicative possession, (b) to discover and describe the processes by which standard constructions can be modified, and (c) to explore links between the typology of predicative possession and other typologies in order to reveal patterns of interdependence. He shows, for example, that the parameter of simultaneous sequencing - the way a language formally encodes a sequence like "John sang and Mary danced" - correlates with the way it encodes predicative possession. By means of this and other links the author sets up a single universal model in order to account for all morphosyntactic variation in predicative possession found in the languages of the world, including patterns of variation over time.
Predicative Possession will interest scholars and advanced students of language typology, diachronic linguistics, morphology and syntax.

Intransitive Predication (Paperback, Revised): Leon Stassen Intransitive Predication (Paperback, Revised)
Leon Stassen
R1,938 Discovery Miles 19 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates cross-linguistic variation in one of the core domains of all natural languages. Leon Stassen views this domain as a 'cognitive space', the topography of which is the same for all languages. The author brings together the research results in a universally applicable model, which can be read as a 'flow-chart' for the encoding of intransitive predications in different language types.

Intransitive Predication constitutes a major contribution to the study of typological linguistics and theoretical linguistics in general. Basing his analysis on a sample of 410 languages, Leon Stassen investigates cross-linguistic variation in one of the core domains of all natural languages. The author views this domain as a `cognitive space', the topography of which is the same for all languages. It is assumed to consist of four subdomains, which correspond to a four-way distinction between the semantic classes of event predicates, property predicates, class predicates, and locational predicates. Leon Stassen offers a typology of the structural manifestations of this domain, in terms of the nature and number of the formal strategies used in its encoding. He discusses a number of abstract principles which can be employed in explaining the cross-linguistic variation embodied by the typology. In the final chapter, he brings together the research results in a universally applicable model, which can be read as a `flow chart' for the encoding of intransitive predications in different language types.
