A book for older babies, toddlers, and children that colorfully
details what a child might experience in the process of weaning
from night nursing. Sally Weans From Night Nursing encourages the
gradual process of weaning without absolutes or judgements
regarding when a child "should" wean. This book helps to validate
the child's feelings associated with change and leads mother and
child through to a new phase in thier relationship. As a prior
mental health therapist, (MSW, LCSW-inactive stay at home mom) I
believe that when a child's feelings are validated and
acknowledged, their emotional distress is signifigantly reduced.
When a mother is ready, this book can be read to her child several
times throughout the day in preparation for night weaning. The
characters and circumstances in this book can then be discussed to
help comfort and validate a child struggling with weaning. When I
used this book to night wean my 18 month old daughter, I would
mention the character Sally to remind my daughter that we needed to
go back to sleep until the morning "like Sally." This book can help
a child understand that although the end of night nursing may be
upsetting, there are also many benefits to getting a good night
sleep. As I wrote this book to help my daughter night wean, there
is a detailed description of what I did, how I felt, and how I
prepared for this event. My daughter was night weaned after 4
nights and then we had a messy strawberry shortcake celebration
with homemade whip cream
Maurice Bowra was, according to one's point of view, either the
most distinguished or the most notorious Oxford don of the early
twentieth century. Classicist, poet, wit, raconteur extraordinary,
and Warden of Wadham College for over thirty years, he met nearly
everyone of consequence in the worlds of literature and politics
and had stories to tell about them all, from Jean Cocteau to
Virginia Woolf, from Adolf Hitler to the Kennedys, from Isaiah
Berlin to Charlie Chaplin. By force of personality and intellectual
range, he influenced the thinking of almost everyone with whom he
came into contact. Above all, brought up in Edwardian England, he
was able to chart the ways in which the values of his youth were
tested by new democratic ideas. His experiences allowed him to
develop and employ theories of education that were startling, and
which would mould the thinking of a generation of English
intellectuals. Based upon a wide range of interviews and previously
unpublished manuscript material, this is the first ever biography
of Bowra, and covers every aspect of his life, from soldier on the
Western Front to Oxford classicist, from celebrated wit to
frustrated poet manque.
The three are Claire, aged thirty-three, born in Battersea, writer
of spicy novels;Sir John, head of a armament combine;Keith, an
American, president of the league of Militaristic Pacifists. When
the air-ship on which they are traveling breaks in half after a
submarine earthquake, they find themselves on a beach near basalt
mountains, intensely cold, Clair and Keith in pajamas, Sir John in
evening clothes. Gradually in their wandering south, it is revealed
to them that they have gone back twenty-five thousand years, that
they are on the lost continent Atlantis, that the great beasts they
glimpse are mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers, that the
Cro-Magnards who take them in are not savages but clean and kindly
children, whose unspoiled ways are worth adoption. The Cro-Magnards
live in painted caves, wear no clothing, know the uses of fire but
possess no vessels, are blissfully ignorant of agriculture. At the
annual mating, lovers choose each other for the winter.
