For the past decade, the rapid development of the ergonomics disciplines as well as the fast growing economy in the Asian region have been attracting the attention of the international ergonomics community. Although East Asia has been changing from a traditional agriculture-oriented society into a modern industry-oriented society and its economy covers a great deal of shared interests across the continents, yet the ergonomics related knowledge and practice are still in its infancy. Because of the geographic proximity and a strong historical, cultural and technology affinity, it is vitally important to maintain good communication and cooperation among the individuals as well as among the ergonomics organizations in the region. This symposium, EAEFS, has provided supporting ergonomics organizations and interested participants a forum to exchange ideas, build friendship, foster greater understanding of and among these individuals and organizations, and develop perspectives concerning ergonomics issues in this region and beyond.

This volume contains the selected papers presented at the Second East Asian Ergonomics Federation Symposium (EAEFS), held from October 4 - 8, 2011 at the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. The Second EAEFS, endorsed by the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), aims to consolidate the established ties within East Asia and to extend the cooperation among ergonomics researchers, professionals, and practitioners in the region to other regions in Asia and the world. Senior scholars and leaders from Asian countries have shared their wisdom, experience, insights, and visions on past, current and future ergonomics efforts in Asia.

This monograph presents recursion theory from a generalized point of view centered on the computational aspects of definability. A major theme is the study of the structures of degrees arising from two key notions of reducibility, the Turing degrees and the hyperdegrees, using techniques and ideas from recursion theory, hyperarithmetic theory, and descriptive set theory. The emphasis is on the interplay between recursion theory and set theory, anchored on the notion of definability. Numerous empirical studies have reported the negative consequences of war on the physical and psychological well-being of children. What do children understand about war? How does that understanding help them make sense of the violent world of which they are part? What do we, as educators, parents and family service providers, need to know in order to prepare ourselves for talking to children about war-related issues? This study describes and compares Taiwanese American (TA) children's and Non-Taiwanese American (NTA) children's perceptions of war. A qualitative research design was adopted. In-depth interviews were conducted with 50 TA and NTA children in the U.S. Data were collected from 2002 through March 2003 before the United States entered in to the war with Iraq. Perception differences with regard to gender and age were explored. Children's reported conversations with their parents about war also were examined. Findings of this study can be useful for helping educators, parents, teachers and other adults discuss war and peace issues with children from different family/cultural backgrounds.

This book is the outcome of Liang Yu's research work as a Ph.D. candidate supervised by Dr. Karl Frank in The University of Texas at Austin from 2001 to 2006. Inspired by the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers, the behavior of bolted connections during and after a fire was studied by both experimental and analytical methods. The results from large amount of high temperature tests on A325 and A490 high strength bolts and bolted connections under and post temperatures up to 1500 Fahrenheit are included. Finite element analyses are conducted to evaluate the catenary effects of steel beams at elevated temperatures and its loads on bolted connections. Methodology of designing bolted connections at elevated temperatures is put forward by interpolating the test and analytical results. This book provides valuable information for the design of bolted connections with better safety during and after a fire.
