Does Quality Pay? - Benefits of Attending a High-Cost, Prestigious College (Paperback): Liang Zhang Does Quality Pay? - Benefits of Attending a High-Cost, Prestigious College (Paperback)
Liang Zhang
R1,431 Discovery Miles 14 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Previous research has generally shown a very small although statistically significant economic benefit from attending high-quality colleges. This small effect was at odds with what students' college choice and various social theories would seem to suggest. This study sought to reconcile the empirical evidence and theories. The effort was in two directions. First, the economic effect of college quality was expanded from examining only the economic benefit to considering other student outcomes including job satisfaction and graduate degree accomplishment. A new perspective regarding the social role of college quality was offered in conclusion.

Zhen-Dong Cui, Zhong-Liang Zhang, Zhi-Xiang Zhan, Peng-Peng He, Chen-Yu Hou, …
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses development laws for axial strain and excess pore water pressure in silty clay around subway shield tunnels before and after freezing-thawing when subjected to subway loading, as well as the effect of freezing-thawing on the dynamic parameters of silty clay, including the dynamic modulus and damping ratio, introducing readers to the design and construction of bypasses in subway tunnels with the artificial freezing method. On this basis, it then studies the microstructures of silty clay before and after freezing-thawing cyclic loading by means of scanning electron microscope tests and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests. Lastly, the book presents a numerical simulation of the dynamics of silty clay around subway tunnels before and after thawing. Given its scope, it offers a valuable reference guide for construction researchers and designers alike, as well as senior undergraduate and graduate students at colleges and universities.

Shanghai Sacred - The Religious Landscape of a Global City (Paperback): Benoit Vermander, Liz Hingley, Liang Zhang Shanghai Sacred - The Religious Landscape of a Global City (Paperback)
Benoit Vermander, Liz Hingley, Liang Zhang
R815 Discovery Miles 8 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Shanghai, a dynamic world metropolis, is home to a multitude of religions, from Buddhism and Islam, to Christianity and Baha'ism, to Hinduism and Daoism, and many more. In this city of 24 million inhabitants, new religious groups and older faiths together claim and reclaim spiritual space. Shanghai Sacred explores the spaces, rituals, and daily practices that make up the religious landscape of the city, offering a new paradigm for the study of Chinese spirituality that reflects the global trends shaping Chinese culture and civil society. Based on years of fieldwork, incorporating both comparative and methodological perspectives, Shanghai Sacred demonstrates how religions are lived, constructed, and thus inscribed into the social imaginary of the metropolis. Evocative photographs by Liz Hingley enrich and interact with the narrative, making the book an innovative contribution to religious visual ethnography.

Modeling the Peel Test for Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (Paperback): Liang Zhang Modeling the Peel Test for Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (Paperback)
Liang Zhang
R1,292 Discovery Miles 12 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The peel test is a commonly used test method for evaluating the adhesive strength. The test is usually conducted by peeling a pressure sensitive tape away from a substrate and measuring the applied peel force. This book proposes a generalized cohesive zone model of the peel test for pressure sensitive adhesives to predict the peel force and the traction distribution across the substrate surface. The cohesive zone is modeled as a continuous fibrillated region in which the adhesive fails cohesively. The governing equations, which accurately describe the adhesive and backing deformations, are derived. The peel rate, the peel angle, the adhesive properties, the backing stiffness and dimensions, and the substrate surface geometry are found to affect the peel force and the traction distribution across the substrate surface. This book provides a solid framework for modeling the peel test for pressure sensitive adhesives.

THE TIANANMEN PAPERS, which contains documents unearthed from the guarded core of the Chinese Politburo, is the most important book on China published in decades. It reveals the highest-level processes of decision-making during the tumultuous events surrounding the terrible massacre in Tiananmen Square on 4 June 1989.
Drawn from about 2,000 documents, THE TIANANMEN PAPERS have been compiled and edited as part of an extraordinary collaboration between America's most prominent China scholars and a handful of Chinese people who have risked their lives to obtain them.
The Chinese pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989 were the longest lasting and most influential in the world. THE TIANANMEN PAPERS exposes the desperate conflict during the period among a few strong leaders, whose personalities emerge with unprecedented vividness. Its revelations of the most important event in modern Chinese history will have a profound impact not only in China, but in every country in the world that deals with China.

R892 Discovery Miles 8 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An expose of the inner workings of the Chinese government and the crackdown on the Tiananmen Square riots. On the night of June 3-4, 1989, Chinese troops violently crushed the largest pro-democracy demonstrations in the history of the communist regime. In this collection of hundreds of internal government and Communist Party documents, secretly smuggled out of China, we learn how these events came to pass from behind the scenes. The material reveals how the most important decisions were made; and how the turmoil split the ruling elite into radically opposed factions. The book includes the minutes of the crucial meetings at which the Elders decided to cashier the pro-reform Party secretary Zhao Ziyang and to replace him with Jiang Zemin, to declare martial law, and finally to send the troops to drive the students from the Square. Just as the Pentagon Papers laid bare the secret American decision making behind the Vietnam War and changed forever our view of the nation's political leaders, so too has The Tiananmen Papers altered our perception of how and why the events of June 4 took the shape they did.
