Following an active science-meets-industry approach on dealing with
biomass and organics waste streams, this timely book foregrounds
key issues facing South African policy makers, industry
practitioners and scholars. The editors drew together a wide pool
of experts in the biomass and organic valorisation industry and
research, offering the most recent research, development and
innovation undertaken by South African universities and science
councils. Spanning twelve chapters and divided into the following
four key parts, the book offers solutions to industry and research
on: Quantifying organic waste: An overview of potential sources and
volumes is offered, with an identification and characterisation of
solid biowaste residues. Biological treatment, covering the latest
norms and standards; a biorefinery approach for the sugar industry;
an integrated waste management approach for municipal sewage
treatment; biogas production from abattoir waste; optimisation of
biogas production from animal waste; and integrated bioremediation
and beneficiation of bio-based waste. Mechanical and chemical
treatment, covering the beneficiation of sawdust waste; developing
sustainable biobased polymer and bio-nanocomposite materials; and
the valorisation of waste mango seeds. Thermal treatment, which
evaluates different municipal solid waste recycling targets in
terms of energy recovery and CO2 reduction.

Here are tales of service station hold-ups, random violence in
elevators, shark attacks and road fatalities. Complete narratives,
with well-drawn characters and plotlines all in 200 words or less.
There are short pieces about supermarkets, computers and dogfights
- all packed with emotional punch. Some describe quiet but no less
significant moments: a child colouring in, a seagull stealing a
chip. Some show us the magic of quotidian life - on trains, buses
and in backyard gardens and nature strips. We gave them a single
blank square of paper to fill. They flashed it with political
satire, memorable lines, mordant observations, flights of fancy and
heartbreaking descriptions.
Here are big stories rendered in miniature and fleeting moments
captured with elaborate focus. A stolen glimpse of a father dancing
alone to music; Gothic landscapes on the New South Wales coast;
incredible spectrums in the colors of butterflies; Aussie cricket
and climate change; remembrances of an exiled home land; or the
awkward sexual politics at a funeral. These stories capture
delightful and unsettling moments of estrangement, when the new
becomes familiar and the ordinary, sublime. Authors include
Ceridwen Dovey, Rjurik Davidson, Tania Hershman, Roberta Lowing,
Angela Meyer, and John Tranter.
If the art of the short story is knowing what to leave out, what is
the art of microfiction? A collection demonstrating many ways of
making much from little. In pieces ranging in length from a few
pages to a line or two, this collection of microfictions and prose
poems intrigues, amuses, saddens, and enlightens in turn. In the
forms of stories, observations, and evocations, all less than 800
words, these strange and unsettling tales offer narratives whittled
into elegance. Readers will find an ode to the ironing board, close
encounters on public transport, paeans to dead sisters, private
play with partners, respect paid to classic authors, and much more.
An anthology of prose poems and microfiction from 30 Australian
writers. Prose poem or sudden prose? The line break takes a small
and stealthy stroll through the streets and fields of prose at
unexpected moments it breaks all the rules. Expect synergy. When
jazz fuses with another music style new energy is released. When
the cuisines of different cultures merge the combinations of
flavors surprise and delight us. Another burst of energy comes from
the integration of the work of so many emerging writers with the
work of widely published and respected authors. Here are short and
clever pieces by thirty contemporary Australian writers on topics
ranging from the eroticism of mashed potato, parenting as magic
realism, and a tongue-in-cheek history of the Cyclops bicycle. Each
one is a creative blast straight from "brain stem to pen," with
ideas and insights that will blow your mind. Includes award-winning
writers Michael Farrell, Keri Glastonbury, Judith Beveridge, and
Peter Boyle. Features prose poems and microfiction selected by
competition judge, Joanne Burns. Cover design and evocative
sketches inside by talented artist, Paden Hunter.
What do our best wordsmiths have to say about Australian icons?
This anthology takes a fresh look at everything from the HIH
collapse to crocs, Margaret Olley, bush burials, and the ABC. We
visit a post-apocalyptic Opera House and spend Saturday night in
downtown Byron Bay. Tones range from nostalgic to sceptical, from
wry to LOL. Featuring prose poetry and microfiction by Mark
O'Flynn, Anna Kerdijk Nicholson, Michael Sharkey, Moya Costello,
and many more.
