Nepantla Squared - Transgender Mestiz@ Histories in Times of Global Shift (Hardcover): Linda Heidenreich Nepantla Squared - Transgender Mestiz@ Histories in Times of Global Shift (Hardcover)
Linda Heidenreich
R2,333 Discovery Miles 23 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

2021 Lambda Literary Awards Finalist Nepantla Squared maps the lives of two transgender mestiz@s, one during the turn of the twentieth century and one during the turn of the twenty-first century, to chart the ways race, gender, sex, ethnicity, and capital function differently in different times. To address the erasure of transgender mestiz@ realities from history, Linda Heidenreich employs an intersectional analysis that critiques monopoly and global capitalism. Heidenreich builds on the work of Gloria Anzaldua's concept of nepantleras, those who could live between and embody more than one culture, to coin the term nepantla(2), marking times of capitalist transition where gender was also in motion. Transgender mestiz@s, too, embodied that movement. Heidenreich insists on a careful examination of the multiple in-between spaces that construct lives between cultures and genders during in-between times of shifting empire and capital. In so doing, they offer an important discussion of race, class, nation, and citizenship centered on transgender bodies of color that challenges readers to rethink the way they understand the gendered social and economic challenges of today.

This Land Was Mexican Once - Histories of Resistance from Northern California (Paperback): Linda Heidenreich This Land Was Mexican Once - Histories of Resistance from Northern California (Paperback)
Linda Heidenreich
R857 Discovery Miles 8 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The territory of Napa County, California, contains more than grapevines. The deepest roots belong to Wappo-speaking peoples, a group whose history has since been buried by the stories of Spanish colonizers, Californios (today's Latinos), African Americans, Chinese immigrants, and Euro Americans. Napa's history clearly is one of co-existence; yet, its schoolbooks tell a linear story that climaxes with the arrival of Euro Americans. In "This Land was Mexican Once," Linda Heidenreich excavates Napa's subaltern voices and histories to tell a complex, textured local history with important implications for the larger American West, as well.

Heidenreich is part of a new generation of scholars who are challenging not only the old, Euro-American depiction of California, but also the linear method of historical storytelling--a method that inevitably favors the last man writing. She first maps the overlapping histories that comprise Napa's past, then examines how the current version came to dominate--or even erase--earlier events. So while history, in Heidenreich's words, may be "the stuff of nation-building," it can also be "the stuff of resistance." Chapters are interspersed with "source breaks"--raw primary sources that speak for themselves and interrupt the linear, Euro-American telling of Napa's history. Such an inclusive approach inherently acknowledges the connections Napa's peoples have to the rest of the region, for the linear history that marginalizes minorities is not unique to Napa. Latinos, for instance, have populated the American West for centuries, and are still shaping its future. In the end, "This Land was Mexican Once" is more than the story of Napa, it is amultidimensional model for reflecting a multicultural past.

Three Decades of Engendering History - Selected Works of Antonia I. Castaneda (Paperback): Linda Heidenreich Three Decades of Engendering History - Selected Works of Antonia I. Castaneda (Paperback)
Linda Heidenreich; As told to Antonia I Castaneda, Luz Maria Gordillo; Afterword by Deena J. Gonzalez
R665 Discovery Miles 6 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Three Decades of Engendering History" collects ten of Antonia I. Castaneda's best articles, including the widely circulated article "Engendering the History of Alta California, 1769-1848," in which Castaneda took a direct and honest look at sex and gender relations in colonial California, exposing stories of violence against women as well as stories of survival and resistance. Other articles included are the prize-winning "Women of Color and the Rewriting of Western History," and two recent articles, "Lullabies y Canciones de Cuna" and "La Despedida." The latter two represent Castaneda's most recent work excavating, mapping, and bringing forth the long and strong post-WWII history of Tejanas. Finally, the volume includes three interviews with Antonia Castaneda that contribute the important narrative of her lived experience--the "theory in the flesh" and politics of necessity that fueled her commitment to transformative scholarship that highlights gender and Chicanas as a legitimate line of inquiry.
