Teaching and Learning Chinese in Global Contexts - CFL Worldwide (Hardcover): Linda Tsung, Ken Cruickshank Teaching and Learning Chinese in Global Contexts - CFL Worldwide (Hardcover)
Linda Tsung, Ken Cruickshank
R5,356 Discovery Miles 53 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although there is an extensive literature on the teaching of English as a Second or Other Language, there is very little published research on the teaching or learning of Chinese in similar contexts. This book is the first to bring together research into the teaching and learning of Chinese as a foreign language to non-native speakers, as a second language to minority groups and as a heritage/community language in the diaspora. The volume showcases the contribution of researchers working in such areas as language teaching and learning, policy development, language assessment, language development, bilingualism, all within the context of Chinese as a Second or Other Language. This is an exciting extension of teaching research beyond the traditional TESOL field and with be of interest to researchers and practioners working in applied linguistics and Chinese language education worldwide.

Bilingual Education and Minority Language Maintenance in China - The Role of Schools in Saving the Yi Language (Hardcover, 1st... Bilingual Education and Minority Language Maintenance in China - The Role of Schools in Saving the Yi Language (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Lubei Zhang, Linda Tsung
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book looks closely at Yi bilingual education practice in the southwest of China from an educationalist's perspective and, in doing so, provides an insight toward our understanding of minority language maintenance and bilingual education implementation in China. The book provides an overview on the Yi people since 1949, their history, society, culture, customs and languages. Adopting the theory of language ecology, data was collected among different Yi groups and case studies were focused on Yi bilingual schools. By looking into the application of the Chinese government's multilingual language and education policy over the last 30 years with its underlying language ideology and practices the book reveals the de facto language policy by analyzing the language management at school level, the linguistic landscape around the Yi community, as well as the language attitude and cultural identities held by present Yi students, teachers and parents. The book is relevant for anyone looking to more deeply understand bilingual education and language maintenance in today's global context.

Learning Chinese in a Multilingual Space - An Ecological Perspective on Studying Abroad (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Peiru Tong,... Learning Chinese in a Multilingual Space - An Ecological Perspective on Studying Abroad (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Peiru Tong, Linda Tsung
R2,568 Discovery Miles 25 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the benefits of an Australian in-country study (ICS) in China programme and explores ways to maximise the short-term ICS experience in a multilingual space. The book employs an ecological perspective which has seldom been used to examine the study abroad context. It emphasises the importance of the space itself as an arena of interaction, belonging and power, where conduct and modes of communication are often regulated by political authorities and societal expectations. Specifically, the book focuses on the following: * the extent to which the ICS facilitated interaction in different settings * the way in which interaction during ICS contributed to language learning * the degree in which the interaction during ICS contributed to culture learning and * the role of identity in the learning process in the ICS. The main argument of the book is that while the ICS promoted multilingual learning space for in-class and out-of-class interactions, which further facilitated language and culture learning to a great extent, Australian students' identities and self-concepts also played a core mediating role throughout individual learning trajectories.

Ken Cruickshank, Stephen Black, Honglin Chen, Linda Tsung, Jan Wright
R4,162 Discovery Miles 41 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is widespread concern in all English speaking countries at the rapid decline in study of languages. The promise of 'languages for all' in the UK and North America in the 1970s marked a shift from languages as elite subjects for the privileged few, but this promise has not been fulfilled. This book explores the reasons for and solutions to this decline. More importantly, it looks at how these trends have been reversed in successful school programs and the implications of this for language education policy makers. The study draws on an analysis of data from 600 primary, secondary and community languages schools over six years and from detailed case studies in a representative sample of 45 successful schools. The book proposes a range of strategies to address the decline: from engaging classroom learning, assessment outcomes and embedding languages as central in school curriculum on the one level, to a mix of incentives and mandation for language study, especially at upper secondary school level. The authors explore the impact of learning languages on the thinking, educational experiences and outcomes of young people across a range of ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. They show the importance of having equal access to languages study in a world where young people will have increasingly more diverse working lives and argue that the gap in languages between policy and uptake is really a gap in the thinking of policy makers and government.

Language Power and Hierarchy - Multilingual Education in China (Paperback): Linda Tsung Language Power and Hierarchy - Multilingual Education in China (Paperback)
Linda Tsung
R1,519 Discovery Miles 15 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shunning polemicism and fashioning a new agenda for a critically informed yet practically orientated approach, this book explores aspects of multilingual education in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Amongst other issues, it also looks at the challenges associated with bilingual and trilingual education in Xinjiang and Tibet as well as the mediation between religion and culture in multi-ethnic schools, covering these issues from a range of perspectives - Korean, Uyghur, Tibetan, Mongolian and Yi. The PRC promotes itself as a harmonious, stable multicultural mosaic, with over 50 distinct ethnic groups striving for common prosperity. Beneath this rhetoric, there is also inter-ethnic discord, with scenes of ethnic violence in Lhasa and Urumqi over the last few years. China has a complex system of multilingual education - with dual-pathway curricula, bilingual and trilingual instruction, specialised ethnic schools. This education system is a lynchpin in the Communist party state's efforts to keep a lid on simmering tensions and transform a rhetoric of harmony into a critical pluralistic harmonious multiculturalism. This book examines this supposed lynchpin.
