R1,350 Discovery Miles 13 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

After more than 15 years of development drawing on research in cognitive psychology, statistical graphics, computer science, and cartography, micromap designs are becoming part of mainstream statistical visualizations. Bringing together the research of two leaders in this field, Visualizing Data Patterns with Micromaps presents the many design variations and applications of micromaps, which link statistical information to an organized set of small maps. This full-color book helps readers simultaneously explore the statistical and geographic patterns in their data. After illustrating the three main types of micromaps, the authors summarize the research behind the design of visualization tools that support exploration and communication of spatial data patterns. They then explain how these research findings can be applied to micromap designs in general and detail the specifics involved with linked, conditioned, and comparative micromap designs. To compare and contrast their purposes, limitations, and strengths, the final chapter applies all three of these techniques to the same demographic data for Louisiana before and after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Supplementary websiteOffering numerous ancillary features, the book's website at http://mason.gmu.edu/~dcarr/Micromaps/ provides many boundary files and real data sets that address topics, such species biodiversity and alcoholism. One complete folder of data examples presents cancer statistics, risk factors, and demographic data. The site includes CCmaps, the dynamic implementation of conditioned micromaps written in Java, as well as a link to a generalized micromaps program. It also contains R functions and scripts for linked and comparative micromaps, enabling re-creation of all the corresponding examples in the book.

Youth in Prison - We the People of Unit Four (Hardcover, annotated edition): M.A. Bortner, Linda Williams Youth in Prison - We the People of Unit Four (Hardcover, annotated edition)
M.A. Bortner, Linda Williams
R4,420 Discovery Miles 44 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Youth in Prison" tells the story of youths in a "model" juvenile prison program--a program created after a class action lawsuit for inhumane and illegal practices. It captures the lives of these youths inside and outside of prison: from drugs, gangs, and criminal behavior to the realities of families, schools, and neighborhoods. Drawing on experience that encompasses twenty years of juvenile justice research and policy analysis, the authors spent two years scrutinizing the prison's attempts to combine accountability and treatment for youths with protection for the public. Situating these within the larger social and political context, the authors have fashioned a book about all of us: those kept, those charged with their keeping, and the society that condones and demands this imprisonment.

Porn Studies (Paperback, annotated edition): Linda Williams Porn Studies (Paperback, annotated edition)
Linda Williams
R829 Discovery Miles 8 290 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In her pioneering book Hard Core, Linda Williams put moving-image pornography on the map of contemporary scholarship with her analysis of the most popular and enduring of all film and video genres. Now, fifteen years later, she showcases the next generation of critical thinking about pornography and signals new directions for study and teaching. Porn Studies resists the tendency to situate pornography as the outer limit of what can be studied and discussed. With revenues totaling between ten and fourteen billion dollars annually—more than the combined revenues of professional football, basketball, and baseball—visual, hard-core pornography is a central feature of American popular culture. It is time, Williams contends, for scholars to recognize this and give pornography a serious and extended analysis. The essays in this volume move beyond feminist debates and distinctions between a “good” erotica and a “bad” hard core. Contributors examine varieties of pornography from the tradition of the soft-core pin-up through the contemporary hard-core tradition of straight, gay, and lesbian videos and dvds to the burgeoning phenomenon of pornography on the Internet. They explore, as examples of the genre, individual works as divergent as The Starr Report, the pirated Tommy Lee/Pamela Anderson honeymoon video, and explicit Japanese “ladies’ comics” consumed by women. They also probe difficult issues such as the sexualization of race and class and the relationship of pornography to the avant-garde. To take pornography seriously as an object of analysis also means teaching it. Porn Studies thus includes a useful annotated bibliography of readings and archival sources important to the study of pornography as a cultural form. Contributors. For too long melodrama has been associated with outdated and morally simplistic stereotypes of the Victorian stage; for too long film studies has construed it as a singular domestic genre of familial and emotional crises, either subversively excessive or narrowly focused on the dilemmas of women. Drawing on new scholarship in transnational theatrical, film, and cultural histories, this collection demonstrates that melodrama is a transgeneric mode that has long spoken to fundamental aspects of modern life and feeling. Pointing to melodrama's roots in the ancient Greek combination of melos and drama, and to medieval Christian iconography focused on the pathos of Christ as suffering human body, the volume highlights the importance to modernity of melodrama as a mode of emotional dramaturgy, the social and aesthetic conditions for which emerged long before the French Revolution. Contributors articulate new ways of thinking about melodrama that underscore its pervasiveness across national cultures and in a variety of genres. They examine how melodrama has traveled to and been transformed in India, China, Japan, and South America, whether through colonial circuits or later, globalization; how melodrama mixes with other modes such as romance, comedy, and realism; and finally how melodrama has modernized the dramatic functions of gender, class, and race by orchestrating vital aesthetic and emotional experiences for diverse audiences.

Playing the Race Card - Melodramas of Black and White from Uncle Tom to O. J. Simpson (Paperback, Revised): Linda Williams Playing the Race Card - Melodramas of Black and White from Uncle Tom to O. J. Simpson (Paperback, Revised)
Linda Williams
R1,292 Discovery Miles 12 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The black man suffering at the hands of whites, the white woman sexually threatened by the black man. Both images have long been burned into the American conscience through popular entertainment, and today they exert a powerful and disturbing influence on Americans' understanding of race. So argues Linda Williams in this boldly inquisitive book, where she probes the bitterly divisive racial sentiments aroused by such recent events as O. J. Simpson's criminal trial. Williams, the author of "Hard Core," explores how these images took root, beginning with melodramatic theater, where suffering characters acquire virtue through victimization.

The racial sympathies and hostilities that surfaced during the trial of the police in the beating of Rodney King and in the O. J. Simpson murder trial are grounded in the melodramatic forms of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "The Birth of a Nation." Williams finds that Stowe's beaten black man and Griffith's endangered white woman appear repeatedly throughout popular entertainment, promoting interracial understanding at one moment, interracial hate at another. The black and white racial melodrama has galvanized emotions and fueled the importance of new media forms, such as serious, "integrated" musicals of stage and film, including "The Jazz Singer" and "Show Boat." It also helped create a major event out of the movie "Gone With the Wind," while enabling television to assume new moral purpose with the broadcast of "Roots." Williams demonstrates how such developments converged to make the televised race trial a form of national entertainment.

When prosecutor Christopher Darden accused Simpson's defense team of "playing the race card," which ultimately trumped his own team's gender card, he feared that the jury's sympathy for a targeted black man would be at the expense of the abused white wife. The jury's verdict, Williams concludes, was determined not so much by facts as by the cultural forces of racial melodrama long in the making. Revealing melodrama to be a key element in American culture, Williams argues that the race images it has promoted are deeply ingrained in our minds and that there can be no honest discussion about race until Americans recognize this predicament.

Anna Everett; Contributions by Murray Pomerance, Mary Beth Haralovich, Toby Miller, Linda Williams, …
R873 Discovery Miles 8 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the 1990s, American civil society got upended and reordered as many social, cultural, political, and economic institutions were changed forever. Pretty People examines a wide range of Hollywood icons who reflect how stardom in that decade was transformed as the nation itself was signaling significant changes to familiar ideas about gender, race, ethnicity, age, class, sexuality, and nationality. Banderas became bona fide movie stars who carried major films to amazing box-office success. Five of the decade's top ten films were opened by three women-Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, and Whoopi Goldberg. "Chick flick" entered the lexicon as Leonardo DiCaprio became the "King of the World," ushering in the cult of the mega celebrity. Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise defined screen masculinity as stark contrasts between "the regular guy" and "the intense guy" while the roles of Michael Douglas exemplified the endangered "Average White Male." A fascinating composite portrait of 1990s Hollywood and its stars, this collection marks the changes to stardom and society at century's end.
