Black Mask-ulinity: A Framework for Black Masculine Caring is a collection of research, narratives, essays, and conceptual works to lay the foundation for an important emerging theoretical framework: Black Masculine Caring (BMC). This framework facilitates an understanding of the teaching and leading styles of Black males, and seeks to improve the educational experiences of Black male students. This book is significant in that it builds upon feminist ethic of caring frameworks and takes readers on a journey toward understanding the ethic of caring through a masculine lens. Authors explore the experiences of caring school leaders; Black male students in need of care; Black males as caring fathers; Black males as caring spiritual leaders; and Black males as caring institutional leaders. More than 20% of all children in the United States live in poverty. This is particularly troubling given the associated risks of poverty to children's social, emotional, and behavioral well-being; risks that have the potential to negatively impact children's lives in and out of school. This book considers the impact of poverty on education, the unique needs of students from high poverty backgrounds, and strategies that hold promise in successfully educating students from high poverty backgrounds. There is a tremendous need for a practical model of school leadership aimed at bridging the gap between high poverty schools and communities, in order to lessen the effects of poverty on children and youth's educational and life experiences. The authors call this "exceptional educational leadership", an approach that centers on the moral and ethical imperative to act in the best interests of children, youth, and their families.

This volume includes specific strategies for school leaders to develop knowledge and skills in supporting the learning and development of all students, as well as understanding the dynamics and importance of ethics in leadership practice. By presenting problem-posing cases, theoretical grounding, relevant research, implications for practice, and learning activities, this book provides aspiring leaders with the background, learning experiences, and analytical tools to successfully promote ethical leadership and student success in their contexts.
