The “Socialist Transformation” of Memory - Reversing Chinese History through “Pernicious-Vestiges” Media Discourse:... The “Socialist Transformation” of Memory - Reversing Chinese History through “Pernicious-Vestiges” Media Discourse
Yusi Liu, Ye Ma
R3,878 Discovery Miles 38 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through discourse analysis and historical comparison of "Pernicious Vestiges" (Yí Dú/遗毒) narrative in the news text of People’s Daily, this book is devoted to revealing its primary metaphors and political functions in China. "Pernicious Vestiges" (Yí Dú/遗毒) is one of the most frequently used words in contemporary Chinese historical narration, as well as a constantly changing rhetorical direction in new China's media discourse, whose function is to remold memory. Over the past 76 years, the "Pernicious Vestiges" narrative continuously constructed by People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the CPC Central Committee, reflects the views of China’s political elite and represents the ruling party's evaluation and re-evaluation of historical events. The findings of this book challenge the myth that memory is naturally superior to forgetting, reflect on the ethics of memory in "Pernicious Vestiges" narratives and the erasure of their own justice, and suggest that the critical space compressed by "Pernicious Vestiges" narratives should be returned to restore the order of memory and historical reflection. This book will be an excellent read for students and scholars of Chinese studies, media studies, and those who are interested in political communication and collective memory in general.

Quantification and Modelling of Fugitive Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Urban Water Systems - A report from the IWA Task Group... Quantification and Modelling of Fugitive Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Urban Water Systems - A report from the IWA Task Group on GHG (Paperback)
Liu Ye, Jose Porro, Ingmar Nopens
R2,587 Discovery Miles 25 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With increased commitment from the international community to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from all sectors in accordance with the Paris Agreement, the water sector has never felt the pressure it is now under to transition to a low-carbon water management model. This requires reducing GHG emissions from grid-energy consumption (Scope 2 emissions), which is straightforward; however, it also requires reducing Scope 1 emissions, which include nitrous oxide and methane emissions, predominantly from wastewater handling and treatment. The pathways and factors leading to biological nitrous oxide and methane formation and emissions from wastewater are highly complex and site-specific. Good emission factors for estimating the Scope 1 emissions are lacking, water utilities have little experience in directly measuring these emissions, and the mathematical modelling of these emissions is challenging. Therefore, this book aims to help the water sector address the Scope 1 emissions by breaking down their pathways and influencing factors, and providing guidance on both the use of emission factors, and performing direct measurements of nitrous oxide and methane emissions from sewers and wastewater treatment plants. The book also dives into the mathematical modelling for predicting these emissions and provides guidance on the use of different mathematical models based upon your conditions, as well as an introduction to alternative modelling methods, including metabolic, data-driven, and AI methods. Finally, the book includes guidance on using the modelling tools for assessing different operating strategies and identifying promising mitigation actions. A must have book for anyone needing to understand, account for, and reduce water utility Scope 1 emissions.

Liu Ye: The Book Paintings (Hardcover): Liu Ye Liu Ye: The Book Paintings (Hardcover)
Liu Ye; Text written by Zhu Zhu; Interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist
R906 Discovery Miles 9 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Chinese artist Liu Ye's meticulous, colorful canvases convey his love of literature in the first publication dedicated to his paintings of books. The Beijing-based artist Liu Ye is known for his precise, deftly rendered representational paintings. Drawn equally from contemporary culture and old master painting, Liu's wide-ranging visual touchstones include Piet Mondrian, Miffy the Bunny, and Prada advertisements. In this new publication devoted to his book paintings, the artist examines the book as both a physical object and cultural totem. Playing with geometry and perspective, Liu creates extraordinary and disorienting portraits of this most familiar subject. Liu's Book Painting series, begun in 2013, depicts close-up views of books that are turned open to reveal empty pages, an approach that emphasizes the object's form over its content. Rendering books' material structure-endpapers, binding, spine-in sensual detail, these paintings indicate an obsession with the book as an object and a lifelong love of literature. Liu's father was a children's book author who introduced him to Western writers at a young age, fueling his curiosity and imagination. Many of the books in Liu's father's collection were banned in Cultural Revolution-era China and the artist read them secretly throughout his childhood. This formative experience figures in his popular Banned Books series and in his book paintings in general. Published on the occasion of a solo exhibition presented at David Zwirner, New York, in 2020, this catalogue includes new writing by the acclaimed poet Zhu Zhu, who traces the evolution of the book form in Liu's work, as well as an interview with the artist by Hans Ulrich Obrist.
