This book is designed to acquaint serious students, scientists, and
clinicians with magnetic source imaging (MSI)--a brain imaging
technique of proven importance that promises even more important
advances. The technique permits spatial resolution of neural events
on a scale measured in millimeters and temporal resolution measured
in milliseconds. Although widely mentioned in literature dealing
with cognitive neuroscience and functional brain imaging, there is
no single book describing both the foundations and actual methods
of magnetoencephalopgraphy and its underlying science,
neuromagnetism. This volume fills a long-standing need, as it is
accessible to scientists and students having no special background
in the field, and makes it possible for them to understand this
literature and undertake their own research.
A self-contained unit, this book covers MSI from beginning to end,
including its relationship to allied technologies, such as
electroencephalography and modern functional imaging modalities. In
addition, the book:
*introduces the field to the non-specialist, providing a framework
for the rest of the book;
*provides a thorough review of the physiological basis of MSI;
*describes the mathematical bases of MSI--the forward and inverse
problems;
*outlines new signal processing methods that extract information
from single-trial MEG;
*depicts the early, as well as the most recent versions of MSI
technology;
*compares MSI with other imaging methodologies;
*describes new paradigms and analysis techniques in applying MSI
to study human perception and cognition, which are also applicable
to EEG; and
*reviews some of the most important resultsin MSI from the most
prominent researchers and laboratories around the world.

Biomagnetism is the study of magnetic fields that originate in
biological systems. This is a relatively new discipline that has
attracted considerable interest throughout the scientific commu-
ty. The study of biomagnetic fields requires the use of techniques
and concepts drawn from widely disparate scientific disciplines. To
make these techniques and concepts available to a wide spectrum of
the scientific community, a NATO Advanced study Institute on B-
magnetism was held near Frascati at Grottaferrata, Italy, in S-
tember 1982. This volume is based on the lectures delivered by
scholars representing many different scientific areas, ranging from
solid state physics to psychology. It attempts to preserve the -
herent development of concepts drawn from physiology, psychology,
biology, physics, medicine, occupational health and geology that
was evident during the Institute. The reader will quickly become
aware that the progress in biomagnetism over the past decade was
due principally to the efforts of interdisciplinary teams of sci-
tists. One of the purposes of this volume is to make all of the
basic principles and findings of biomagnetism available in one
place, so that scientists who have already embarked on the study of
biomagnetism or who plan to do so in the near future will have them
available for study and reference. Each section of this volume was
written by a recognized expert who lectured at the Institute on the
topics he describes here.

Whether defined by the carnivalesque excesses of Troma studios (
"The Toxic Avenger"), the arthouse erotica of Radley Metzger and
Doris Wishman, or the narrative experimentations of Abel Ferrara,
Melvin Van Peebles, Jack Smith, or Harmony Korine, underground
cinema has achieved an important position within American film
culture. Often defined as "cult" and "exploitation" or
"alternative" and "independent," the American underground retains
separate strategies of production and exhibition from the cinematic
mainstream, while its sexual and cinematic representations differ
from the traditionally conservative structures of the Hollywood
system. "Underground U.S.A." offers a fascinating overview of this
area of maverick moviemaking by considering the links between the
experimental and exploitative traditions of the American
underground.

Dwarfsploitation is an entertaining and educational look into the
world of dwarf cinema. From Freaks to Willow, Dwarfsploitaton
analyzes a wide variety of both independent and mainstream films,
chronicling the number of ways in which little people are
exploited. It is a must have for any fan of little people or film
itself. "Dwarfish reviews about dwarf films seems an odd basis for
a book, but it's surprisingly entertaining and enlightening and
respectful about the little folk. A snappy, unique guide to all
films Dwarf." - Joe R. Lansdale, author of Bubba Ho-Tep "This book
is truly a one-of-a-kind. An inspired idea, and an equally-inspired
book. Chris Watson and Brad Paulson have created something special
with "Dwarfsploitation." In an age when there seems to be books
about every aspect of cinema, these authors have discovered a niche
that had yet to be explored. Kudos." - Andrew J. Rausch, author of
Turning Points in Film History "The first time I went to the
Library of Congress to do research on midgets in film, I was
directed to a single tattered volume produced by the MGM publicist
on "The Wizard of Oz." I was astounded. The literature was
virtually non-existent. Later I had a special assignment involving
dwarf-tossing, and I sought out any dwarf-tossing trade association
that could possibly be of any assistance. Again, my exertions were
frustrated. That's why, when I first heard that "Dwarfsploitation"
was in the works, I was cautiously hopeful but still ready for a
Billy Barty headbutt to the nuts. I'm happy to say that the
resulting book is a resource that we've needed for 60 years, and
should take up permanent residence on the Ikea children's-room book
shelves of anyone shorter than 4-foot-4." - Joe Bob Briggs, author
of Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In "Brad and Chris's book stands head
and shoulders above the run of the mill cinema book types. It makes
little people everywhere stand a little." - James Bryan, director
of Don't Go in the Woods "Paulson and Watson's book is a unique
perspective to say the least. We seem to have books on everything
these days, so, why not something that is entertaining, informative
and celebrates our little friends in cinema." - Robert Davi, actor
from License to Kill "It was a short read and I loved it. Don't
overlook it " - Joe Estevez, actor from Soultaker ""Wow, I'm
impressed This has to be the most comprehensive guide to cinematic
dwarves that you'll ever read. Meticulously researched, with
hysterically funny yet genuinely fond comments by the authors,
running the gamut from dwarfsploitation to 'normal' life. A
must-have for any film-fan's library." - scream queen Brinke
Stevens "A salute to Little People everywhere that belongs on every
film aficionado's desk . Horror film makers: A demented dwarf is
icing on the cake. I am working one into my next film. I'm the man
that discovered both Luis Dejesus and Herve and can say without
fear of contradiction what they lacked in height they made up in
talent and length." - Joel M. Reed, director of Bloodsucking Freaks
Lloyd Kaufman, the writer/producer/director of such cult-classic films as The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and Tromeo and Juliet, offers a guide to movie-making unlike any other available anywhere. In 25 years, Kaufman, along with partner Michael Herz, has built Troma Studios up from a company struggling to find its voice in a field crowded with competitors to its current—and legendary—status as a lone survivor, a bastion of true cinematic independence, and the world's greatest collection of camp on film.
As entertaining and funny as it is informative and insightful, Make Your Own Damn Movie! places Kaufman's radically low-budget, independent-studio style of filmaking directly in the reader's hands. Thus we learn how to: develop and write a knock-out screenplay; raise funding; find locations and cast actors; hire a crew; obtain equipment, permits, and music rights (all for little or no money); make incredible special effects for $0.79 each; charm, schmooze, and network while on the film-festival circuit; and, finally, make a bad actor act so bad it's actually good.
From scriptwriting and directing to financing and marketing, this book is brimming with utterly off-the-wall, decidedly maverick, yet consistently proven advice on how to fully develop one's idea for an independent film.
