Based on a true story and set during the French Revolution, this novel tells the tale of a Senegalese girl saved from slavery and raised by an aristocratic French family. When she overhears a conversation about her race, she suddenly becomes aware of the color of her skin and the prejudice it produces. Unhappy and physically ill after her revelation, Ourika struggles to come to terms with her African identity in the midst of upper-class wealth and privilege. A bestseller ever since its publication in 1823, this touching story addresses race, class, and the role of women in society with earnest emotion and surprising psychological depth.
Entrusted in 1906 by the newspaper "Le Matin "with the "faits-divers" column, Felix Feneon, dandy and model civil servant by day, started reporting on the accidents, fights, riots, arsons, and murders from around the provinces. Given only three lines to detail each incident, Feneon turned the practice into an art, loading the pieces with sarcasm and black humor until each small capsule of life was an explosive read. The result is this collection of more than 1,200 short texts that still have the freshness and nerve to surprise even the modern reader.
Jean Dezert is a melancholy individual who, plagued with a terrible lack of imagination, is mortally bored. He had begun resigning himself to his own mediocrity when, one Sunday, trying to distract himself, he does what the advertisements he is handed on the streets tell him to do: he takes a hot bath with a massage, has lunch at an anti-alcoholic vegetarian restaurant, and ends his day by attending a conference about sexual health livened by a soiree. It is then that he meets the lively and wild Elvire Barrochet, who approaches him in the middle of the Jardin des Plantes and makes his life impossible.
