The Love of Daphnis and Chloe (2nd century C.E.) is an ancient
Greek romance novel by Longus. Set on Lesbos, it is a classic story
of love set in a recognizably pastoral setting. An important early
novel and a landmark in the development of Western literature, The
Love of Daphnis and Chloe has inspired and influenced such
wide-ranging artists as Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Allan Ramsay, Marc
Chagall, Colette, and Yukio Mishima. Abandoned at birth, Daphnis is
raised by a goatherd named Lamon on the island of Lesbos. Chloe,
likewise abandoned, is raised by Dryas, a nearby shepherd. Living
and working in the fields of their native land, the two become fast
friends, frequently spending time together while herding their
respective flocks. As they fall in love, with no model for romantic
affection, Daphnis and Chloe struggle to understand their mutual
feeling. Seeking the guidance of a wise cowherd, they are advised
to share a kiss with one another, for only a kiss will cure their
growing sickness. All too trusting, they follow the cowherd's
instruction, only to be plunged into deeper desire. Still unsure of
how to show his affection, Daphnis journeys to the city, where an
older woman educates him in the ways of love. Meanwhile, Chloe is
kidnapped and taken to a faraway kingdom. Fearing the worst,
Daphnis embarks on a journey to save her, facing pirates, pitfalls,
and countless other dangers on his way. The Love of Daphnis and
Chloe is not only a groundbreaking work of prose fiction, but a
widely adapted model of classical romance that continues to be read
and appreciated nearly two millennia after its publication. With a
beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript,
this edition of Longus's The Love of Daphnis and Chloe is a classic
of ancient Greek literature reimagined for modern readers.
Longus' Daphnis and Chloe is arguably our finest surviving Greek
novel. Written under the Roman Empire and engaging with romantic,
pastoral and rhetorical themes, the story and characterisation have
captured the imaginations of artists over the centuries. Despite a
growing interest in ancient novels over the past half-century, this
is the first full commentary to address Longus' linguistic texture
and its implications for his literary aspirations, as well as his
narrative skills and intertextuality with earlier Greek writers.
The commentary provides a detailed analysis of Longus' Greek and
its relation to other Greek prose and poetry of the second century
AD and earlier, and emphasises the construction and style of the
original text, drawing out key points for clarification and
discussion. A wide-ranging introduction ensures that this book will
be an indispensable guide for teachers and students of all levels
who are looking to engage with Longus' writing.

In Longus's ravishing "Daphnis and Chloe" (second or early third
century CE), one of the great works of world literature, an
innocent boy and girl gradually discover their sexuality in an
idealized pastoral environment. In Xenophon's "Anthia and
Habrocomes" (first century CE), perhaps the earliest extant novel
and a new addition to the Loeb Classical Library, a newlywed
couple, separated by mischance, survive hair-raising adventures and
desperate escapes as they traverse the Mediterranean and the Near
East en route to a joyful reunion. The pairing of these two novels
well illustrates both the basic conventions of the genre and its
creative range.
This new edition offers fresh translations and texts by Jeffrey
Henderson, based on the recent critical editions of Longus by M. D.
Reeve and Xenophon by J. N. O'Sullivan.
'he sat down and wept, to think that even the rams knew more about
the deeds of love than he did' Daphnis is fifteen years old, Chloe
thirteen. They are drawn to each other and long to make love. But
no one has told them what love is, nor do they know how to
accomplish the physical act. Round their predicament Longus weaves
a fantasy which entertains and instructs, but never errs in taste.
The hard toil and precariousness of peasant life are here, but so
are its compensations - revelry, music, dance, and storytelling.
Above the action brood divine presences - Eros, Dionysus, Pan, the
Nymphs - who collaborate to guide the adolescents into the mystery
of Love, at once a sensual and a religious initiation. Daphnis and
Chloe is the best known, and the best, of the early Greek romances,
precursors to the modern novel. Admired by Goethe, it has been
reinterpreted in music and art by Ravel and Chagall. This new
translation is immensely readable, and does full justice to the
humour and humanity of the story. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100

At the heart of much romantic literature of the modern era, this physically explicit and emotionally charged early novel holds an important place in the classical/European canon.
A trio of tales offering an eye-opening alternative view of ancient
Greece's literary culture.
A fascinating counterpoint to the monumental epics of ancient
Greece, Greek Fiction features three novelistic works written
between the first and fourth centuries AD. Chariton's
"Callirhoe"-perhaps the first novel ever written-is the stirring
tale of two star-crossed lovers who are torn apart when Callirhoe
is kidnapped and sold into slavery. Longus's "Daphnis and Chloe"
tells the story of a boy and girl-both abandoned at birth-who grow
up to fall in love and battle pirates. "Letters of Chion" is an
early thriller about tyranny and political assassination. Together
these works open a welcome window onto ancient Greece's
little-explored legacy of prose fiction.
