Ritual and architecture have provided the abstract and the tangible
foundations of group worship from the era of the first Christians
to the present-day ceremonial of the Church. Through the centuries
the buildings that house liturgical practices have developed their
own specific individuality, and the interpretation of the liturgy
is reflected in architecture, a reflection in stone of community
prayer lives. The early Syrian churches, the Roman basilicas, the
Byzantine, Gothic, and Romanesque styles of the Western churches
are symbols of the adaptation of architecture to liturgy—of style
to content. Father Bouyer replaces myths and misconceptions about
Church liturgy with facts based on archeological findings and, in
doing so, gives an entirely new concept of the importance of Church
architecture as an implementation of liturgical worship. "Builders
of modern churches, says Father Bouyer, "seem to lack that inspired
touch.... We try to furnish our churches with features picked at
random from old routine styles." To make Church architecture a
contemporary witness to the liturgy, it is the author's belief that
past practices must be examined to see if they are irrevocably
welded to the past or flexible enough to reapply to the present. To
discover—or rediscover—the meaning of the liturgy demands an
over-all perspective necessary to remodel and structure our
churches of today.
The current textbooks for specialists are too detailed. This book
will be a handy pocket guide for trainee vascular radiologists, and
will serve as an aide-memoire for senior vascular radiologists.
Each procedure will be shown in its entirety. Rather than being a
library purchase, this book will be a handy and accessible guide
for quick reference aimed at clinical interventional radiologists
in multidisciplinary staff rooms and angiography suites.
Eucharist is a detailed history of the Christian Eucharistic
formularies. Bouyer gives a thorough analysis of the Jewish meal
prayers, the berakoth, to which he traces the origins of the
eucharistic rite, and ends with the recent addition of new
eucharistic prayers to the Roman rite. He also includes the history
of the various forms of the early Christian liturgies, of the
Byzantine, Gallican, and Mozarabic Eucharists, of the changes
introduced during the Reformation, and of developments in the
Anglican, Lutheran, and Reformed traditions.

In this wide-ranging yet coherent book, Bouyer both explores
mankind's ineradicably religious nature and traces the paths of
God's self-revelation that culminate in Christ and the proclamation
of the Father. Chapter by chapter, the reader is led to a wide and
deep vision of humanity's search for God and God's for humanity.
This book faces fearlessly the deepest questions being put to
Christians, and to humanity as a whole, at the dawn of the third
millennium.
What is the cosmos, our place in it and its relation to God? These
questions form the framework of Fr. Bouyer's investigation through
the history of ideas and the unfolding of humanity's attempts to
make sense of the universe.
This is a unique work, a well-documented study which examines
mysticism from its pagan origins to Paul and the Church Fathers, as
it was understood in medieval times, as well as by Jewish and
Buddhist initiates. The book presents a sweeping exegesis of
historic and foundational literature and myth, but Bouyer makes
sense of it and interprets it in the light of Christian history and
theology.
Published for the first time in English for the 'Year of the
Father', Louis Bouyer's magisterial summa explores the religious
experience of humanity, and traces the paths of God's
self-revelation as Father, culminating in the Incarnation of his
Son and the interpretations this has received in the history of the
Church.
Ranging from myth and magic to depth psychology and sociology, the
book is a tour de force of Christian reflection and scholarship. It
culminates in a new interpretation of the mysteries of Israel and
Islam, and of the rise and fall of Western theology that set the
scene for modern idealism and atheism.
A scholarly and masterful exploration of the meaning and importance
of 'mystery' and 'mysticism' to the Christian revelation, offering
a fuller understanding of Christian spirituality down the ages and
a firmer grasp of what it means to be a Christian.>
A classic portrait of St Philip Neri, which portrays the saint with
a particular affection and understanding and sets him against the
background of Renaissance Italy. The Apostle of Rome, as St Philip
was called, has much wisdom to teach us and the author brings out
his continuing relevance for a contemporary audience. This edition
contains a new introduction and a chronology of the majot events in
St Philip's life. Fr Michael Day who translated the work into
English was a member of the Birmingham Oratory, established by
Cardinal Newman. Louis Bouyer is well known for his many
theological writings.
