Anne of Green Gables is a literary classic written by Lucy Maud
Montgomery. It is the story of a young orphan girl who was sent to
a middle-aged brother and sister who are farmers and intended to
adopt a boy to help them run the farm. The novel tells the story of
how she gets on with them and in the community. This story has sold
over 50 million copies since publication and Lucy Maud Montgomery
wrote seven other novels, telling Anne Shirley's life story. They
are all available here in a single volume, and in age order. Enjoy
this classic tale of the orphan girl making her way through life.
Anne Shirley is an eleven-year-old orphan who has hung on determinedly to an optimistic spirit and a wildly creative imagination through her early deprivations. She erupts into the lives of aging brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a girl instead of the boy they had sent for.
Thus begins a story of transformation for all three; indeed the whole rural community of Avonlea comes under Anne’s influence in some way. We see her grow from a girl to a young woman of sixteen, making her mistakes, and not always learning from them. Intelligent, hot-headed as her own red hair, unwilling to take a moral truth as read until she works it out for herself, she must also face grief and loss and learn the true meaning of love.
Part Tom Sawyer, part Jane Eyre, by the end of Anne of Green Gables, Anne has become the heroine of her own story.
Patricia Gardiner is another of Montgomery's sweet-natured and
agreeable heroines. She grows up in the beautiful house of Silver
Bush, surrounded by a large family, whose true mother-figure is
their Irish cook, Judy. She loves and clings to the house as the
best and most constant source of happiness in her life. As she
matures she becomes more accepting of the inevitability of change,
despite her experiences of illness and loss. Montgomery said that
there was more of herself in Pat than any of her other heroines,
and this novel strongly echoes her own lovingly remembered
childhood on Prince Edward Island, with Silver Bush standing in for
her cousins' house, Park Corner.

`Digital economy policy for the creative industries is framed too
commonly in terms of refining and strengthening intellectual
property rights. As digitalization grows in scope and importance,
Lucy Montgomery's intriguing book shows how the limitations of this
narrow approach have become all too apparent, as China's creative
industries are thriving in an ever increasing digital global
society because (and not despite) of the fact that their
businesses, innovations, skills and markets have grown up with weak
copyright enforcement regimes.' - Birgitte Andersen, Birkbeck
College, University of London, UK `Lucy Montgomery brings together
thought-provoking insights into China's cultural and creative
sectors, notably the shift from official culture to entrepreneurial
consumers, the relative unimportance of copyright compared to
Western economies, and the need for us to understand evolutionary
economics. The result is a new model of China's online networks as
a public source of cultural products. Her book should be required
reading everywhere that wants to understand what is happening in
China.' - John Howkins, City University, London, Howkins &
Associates, Shanghai and author of Creative Ecologies China's
Creative Industries explores the role of new technologies,
globalization and higher levels of connectivity in re-defining
relationships between `producers' and `consumers' in 21st century
China. The evolution of new business models, the impact of state
regulation, the rise of entrepreneurial consumers and the role of
intellectual property rights are traced through China's film, music
and fashion industries. The book argues that social network
markets, consumer entrepreneurship and business model evolution are
driving forces in the production and commercialization of cultural
commodities. In doing so it raises important questions about
copyright's role in the business of culture, particularly in a
digital age. With a specially commissioned foreword by John
Hartley, this insightful book will appeal to post-graduate students
and academic researchers in China and Asian studies, intellectual
property, cultural studies, film, music and fashion studies,
cultural economics and innovation management. People working in the
creative industries with an interest in devising strategies for
expansion into the Chinese market, as well as people working in the
creative industries outside China with an interest in developing
successful digital strategies, will also find much to interest them
in this book.

This early work by Lucy Maud Montgomery was originally published in
1916 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory
biography. 'The Watchman & Other Poems' is a collection of
poems by this famous writer of fiction. She worries that her
husband no longer loves her but vows to make him fall for her
again. Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on 30th November 1874, New
London, in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Her
mother, Clara Woolner (Macneil), died before Lucy reached the age
of two and so she was raised by her maternal grandparents in a
family of wealthy Scottish immigrants. In 1908 Montgomery produced
her first full-length novel, titled 'Anne of Green Gables'. It was
an instant success, and following it up with several sequels,
Montgomery became a regular on the best-seller list and an
international household name. Montgomery died in Toronto on 24th
April 1942.
"Anne of Green Gables" is the classic story and first book in Lucy
Maud Montgomery's beloved series about a precocious girl, Anne
Shirley. This wonderfully funny story follows young, orphaned Anne
as she moves to the small town of Avonlea in Prince Edward Island,
Canada and finds people to love, finds her place in the world, and
eventually grows into her own. This is a timeless story of
childhood mistakes and adventures that everyone should read, being
a particularly poignant book for girls. Young teenagers will find
this story of adolescent joys and missteps both entertaining and
meaningful. The character of Anne Shirley quickly won over the
hearts of readers when the book was published in 1908. Mark Twain
wrote to Lucy Maud Montgomery saying Anne Shirley was "the dearest,
and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice."

Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's novel tells the tale of
Anne Shirley, a red-headed orphan mistakenly fostered on Matthew
and Marilla Cuthbert, two middle aged siblings who run a small farm
on Canada's Prince Edward Island. The Cuthberts had 'ordered' an
orphan boy to help in the fields, but Anne's talkative nature, her
romantic nature and irrepressible optimism gradually charm the
staid old couple. She is allowed to stay and is soon popular with
her schoolmates, especially her bosom friend Diana, and the
handsome and annoying Gilbert Blythe, whom Anne refuses to speak to
after he jokingly calls her 'Carrots'. The author lovingly traces
Anne's journey through childhood, following her adventures and
misadventures from a naive, melodramatic child to an intelligent,
selfless young woman who, despite setbacks, remains unconquerably
optimistic about life and the human condition.

Anne, a young orphan from fictional community of Bolingbroke, Nova
Scotia, is sent to Prince Edward Island after a childhood spent in
strangers' homes and orphanages. The book recounts Anne's
adventures in making a home: the country school, where she quickly
excels in her studies; her friendship with Diana Barry; her budding
literary ambitions; and her rivalry with classmate Gilbert Blythe,
who teases her about her red hair.
Anne Shirley is exactly the opposite of what the Cuthberts were
expecting when they send for a farmhand from the orphanage to help
around the house and farm. Instead of a strong reliable boy they
find a fiery, imaginative and headstrong girl. Anne desperately
wants to stay at Green Gables, but will she ever persuade the
Cuthberts to keep her, or learn how to fit in with everybody else?
Laughter, love and learning all combine in this brilliant sequel to
'Anne of Green Gables'. Anne has given up her dream of college for
the time being, instead staying in Avonlea as a teacher. But life
is still full of adventures and scrapes; what with two orphaned
twins, a very interesting romance and the thought of the extremely
handsome Gilbert Blythe's odd behaviour. This is definitely going
to get interesting
Valancy Stirling is unmarried at 29. Frustrated by her loveless
state and stifled by her moralistic family, for years she has been
escaping into an imaginary life in her Blue Castle in Spain. Then
unexpected news shocks her into asserting her independence and
striking out against society's conventions. Her old fantasies seem
irrelevant now - but dreams of the Blue Castle are not forgotten as
she refocuses her energies on living her life on her own terms.
Lucy Maud Montgomery, best known for 'Anne of Green Gables', has
created a wonderfully sympathetic heroine in Valancy, engaging the
reader fully in her trials and triumphs. A great love of the
Canadian wilderness comes pouring out in beautifully evocative
prose accompanied with sharp observation of the personalities and
attitudes of her characters and the society they inhabit. This new

This early novel is both expensive and hard to find in its first
edition. Written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the Canadian author who
is perhaps best known for her novel Anne of Green Gables, The Story
Girl follows the adventures of Sara Stanley and her young cousins
who live in rural Canada. A fascinating novel of the period that is
still an interesting and entertaining read today. Many of the
earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and
before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are
republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality,
modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
