Ludger Pries explores the important moral, social and political
challenge facing Europe and the international community: the
protection of refugees as one of the most vulnerable groups on the
planet. Combining an in-depth analysis of current research, own
empirical studies in several European countries, and a critical
review of the policies of nation states as well as international
and transnational organizations, the author analyses the 2015
so-called refugee crisis and its continuing impact. Who are the
refugees, how and why did they come? Which parts of civil society
were actively involved and why? What are the future
responsibilities of the state for arriving refugees and their
successful integration? This book examines the limitations of
structural settings with perspectives on collective actors?
behaviour and strategies. Offering a critical view on the
historical embedding of the refugee issue, as well as the current
and future challenges for Europe, Pries provides an insightful
overview of all aspects of the so-called European refugee crisis
and its aftermath. Refugees, Civil Society and the State merges
perspectives from political science and international relations
with international humanitarian law, the sociology of migration and
action theory. Scholars, journalists and political actors who want
to further understand the ongoing challenge of refugee protection
will greatly benefit from the distinguished author?s research.
During the last two decades transnationalism has become an
important conceptual approach and research programme. However, the
term has steadily become vague and indistinct underlining the need
for conceptual precising as well as more defined empirical
research. Rethinking Transnationalism does this in two ways. On one
hand it presents theoretical contributions to the transnationalism
approach and, on the other hand, it offers empirical studies in the
field of the transnationalization of organizations. The book
integrates outstanding international scholars of transnationalism
and migration studies with specialists from a broad variety of
disciplines that apply the transnationalism approach to different
organizations such as NGOs, feminist networks, educational spaces
and European Works Councils. Presenting an overview of
transnationalism and the surrounding debates, this
interdisciplinary volume will be of interest to students and
scholars of Politics, International Relations, Sociology,
Anthropology, Educational Sciences, Migration and Geography.

Comprising the study, documentation, and comparison of plant-level
workers' participation around the world, this volume meets the
challenge of offering a global perspective on workers'
participation, representation, and models of social partnership.
Value chains, economic life, inter-cultural exchange and knowledge,
as well as the mobility of persons and ideas increasingly cross the
borders of nation-states. In the knowledge age, the active
participation of workers in organizations is crucially important
for sustainable and long-term growth and innovation. This handbook
offers lessons from historical, global accounts of workers'
participation at plant level, even as it looks forward to predict
forthcoming trends in participation.
This volume analyses civil society as an important factor in the
European refugee regime. Based on empirical research, the chapters
explore different aspects, structures and forms of civil society
engagement during and after 2015. Various institutional, collective
and individual activities are examined in order to better
understand the related processes of refugees' movements, reception
and integration. Several chapters also explore the historical
development of the relationship between a range of actors involved
in solidarity movements and care relationships with refugees across
different member states. Through the combined analysis of
macro-level state and European policies, meso-level organization's
activities and micro-level individual behaviour, Refugee Protection
and Civil Society in Europe presents a comprehensive exploration of
the refugee regime in motion, and will be of interest to scholars
and students researching migration, social movements, European
institutions and social work.
During the 1930s, thousands of social scientists fled the Nazi
regime or other totalitarian European regimes, mainly towards the
Americas. The New School for Social Research (NSSR) in New York
City and El Colegio de Mexico (Colmex) in Mexico City both were
built based on receiving exiled academics from Europe. Comparing
the first twenty years of these organizations, this book offers a
deeper understanding of the corresponding institutional contexts
and impacts of emigrated, exiled and refugeed academics. It
analyses the ambiguities of scientists' situations between
emigration, return-migration and transnational life projects and
examines the corresponding dynamics of application, adaptation or
amalgamation of (travelling) theories and methods these academics
brought. Despite its institutional focus, it also deals with the
broader context of forced migration of intellectuals and scientists
in the second half of the last century in Europe and Latin America.
In so doing, the book invites a deeper understanding of the
challenges of forced migration for scholars in the 21st century.

This book examines the role that European employee representatives
play in the restructuring of firms. In a globalized economy,
company internationalization and transnational restructuring are of
growing concern for employees and trade unions. In the European
Union, the still rather new institution of European works councils
provides basic rights for employees. Using examples of eight large
automotive manufacturers like Volkswagen, GM or Toyota, the volume
analyzes the internationalization strategies of the companies and
the effects of European works councils, pointing to a high degree
of variation in strategies and effectiveness of cross-border
employee representation.
Jahrhundert. Dabei werden aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zum
Teil stark variierende Antworten gegeben. Gemeinsamer Bezugspunkt
Vielmehr
istalle sozial relevante Vielfalt immer auch gesellschaftlich, also
durch sozialen Zusammenhalt hergestellte Vielfalt. Gegen
unkritisch-pauschale optimistische oder pessimistische
Beurteilungen zunehmender Vielfalt fur gesellschaftlichen

Moscheegemeinden zusammen. Welche Rolle spielen hierbei
grenzuberschreitend tatige Migrantenorganisationen - fur deren
In
Technik - Sozialvertragliche Technikgestaltung" durchgefiihrte
uns eingeholten Korreferate (Pries/Schmidt/Trinczek 1989). In
diesem zweiten Berichts- teil folgt unsere brancheniibergreifende
Auswertung und Interpretation des vorliegenden Materials. Dabei
wurde Teil II, III, VI und der Anhang I von Ludger Pries
bearbeitet, Teil V und der Anhang II von Rudi Schmidt und Teil IV
von Rainer Trinczek. Die Inhalte trag en wir selbstverstandlich
gemeinsam.
Projektabwicklung ware unsere Arbeit manches Mal gefahr- lich ins
Stocken geraten.
Endphase in erheblichem Umfang anfielen.
Universitat Erlangen-Niirnberg wesentlich beteiligt.
Rationalisierung fur Industriearbeit untersucht. In den hier
vorgelegten Branchenexpertisen und den zusatzlichen Materialien
wird ein differenziertes Bild der deutschen Industrielandschaft
entworfen.
verfugbare Gesamtschau."
